Monday's episode was a breath of fresh air, an episode that actually moves the plot, has a flair of drama, and is heavy on characterization trumps all of these gimmicky episodes with family guest stars or whatever that slap episode was all about.
It was nice to see Lily get verbally beat down by Marshall for once, though I wish he had played a few more cards...though dropping that "consolation prize" nuclear warhead was devastating and incredible to watch. That had to be the ballsiest and unexpected moment by Marshall since knocking out the bouncer.
I have to say though, learning Barney's actual job reveals so much about his character. We know a ton about Marshall, Lily, and Robin. We kind of know Ted (they are too wishy washy on him...is he the average guy or is he a wuss?) but our idea of Barney has always been skewed by his awesomeness. For instance how can a kid from a messed up low income family who can barely pay attention in a one-on-one class taught by his friend (the Robin 101 episode) get into and graduate from MIT and then parlay that degree into a coffee shop job which he then trades in for the easiest corporate job in the world where he makes an insane amount of money...that makes no sense but we bought into it because Barney is awesome and he does what he wants. Learning that Barney is not an academic or business genius but rather the complete and utter master of deception and strategy and that his job was a highly paid fall guy that he played perfectly reveals an incredible amount about his character. I also think it shows an incredible amount about how good of a guy he really is. He was working to bring down GNB the entire time but not before he hooked up all of his friends along the way (Marshall and Ted making their careers off of GNB, Lily surviving due to Marshall's income and then landing her job with the Captain who she met at the GNB ball, and Robin whose job he saved by using his connections and resume skills), probably rewarding four of the six people who never abandoned him. It would also explain why for a guy who thrived off one-night stands and worked for an evil business why he was so upset that he slept with Robin. He's a genuinely good guy who loves his friends and also happens to be awesome. Makes sense, he loves his brother and his mom and apparently does in fact work for the good guys and the Earth. The abandonment he felt from 1) his dad and 2) his girlfriend has motivated every move he's made for years. Hopefully Robin gives him peace but judging by the fact that we never see a ring on Barney's finger in the future, I'm not 100% certain that Barney's story is "wrapped up" by this point.
