I've enjoyed reading this thread all season and never responded, but I enjoyed the ending. It's possible for Ted to honestly have been completely over Robin and been madly in love with the mother. Once she died, he waited 6 years. They always had a thing during the entire series and it just makes sense that they would give it another try if they're both available.

It was a predictable ending, but it fit the overall story arc of the show.

Yeah, just add that as another reason I didn't like the ending. There's a difference between providing a twist and trying to fool people.

I truly do prefer the ending of dexter to that hot garbage I just watched.

I agree with this. I wish they would spread out all the events of the final episode over the last season. Obviously the focus on Barney and Robins wedding and all the revelations therein turned out to be meaningless, yet they spent 22 episodes focusing on it.

By spreading out the events, we wouldn't have had to find out in rapid fire succession that the Mother had officially died and that he now wants to go after Robin again. Even though it was logical within the confines of the entire show, it was very difficult to digest those two MAJOR pieces of information so quickly.

Exactly.

I'll take my crow from earlier, but why do the damn interview then? Throwing in twists or having clues that go against each other to create uncertainty as to what is going on is fine. But why create a ton of giant neon signs pointing towards her dying, then go on the interview and flat out lie and basically say, "Oh no, they guessed it all... I thought we had hidden it so cleverly... Umm, we swear she isn't dead! That's just ridiculous!" And then she is dead and I am sure all of the writers are just sitting around thinking "We got them!"...

The entire last season was full of super-lazy writing as they finished tearing down the characters they built in the earlier seasons.

It's also total BS that a young woman just arrived from Canada to the big U.S. city has four besties in two weeks. Seriously F off with this. I don't even have four regular friends.

Exactly. To me that’s what makes it extra crappy. All the bull@#$ about how he was telling the kids the story about meeting their DEAD mother – was really a story about how he’s ALWAYS been in love with Aunt Robin and would have ended up with her sooner if it just hadn’t been for that other lady that gave birth to them.

To be fair, they already had a depressing episode to establish Robin couldn't have kids. This entire show has just been a way to solve that problem.

And I think this has some of the cheapest, most contrived writing I have ever seen. It would be lucky to get a D in a creative writing class.

yeah... this doesn't surprise me in the least.

This ending was horse****. I agree with what most have said on this thread; why spend so much time on a wedding that ultimately fails? Then build up the mother character just to kill her and have Ted go back to Robin in a matter of minutes?

Screw this show, I'm gonna go watch a finale that did it right... Scrubs (and I don't count season 9 as "really" Scrubs)

Exactly. It's amazing how one show leaves you wanting more at the end and a lasting sense of nostalgia while the other taints it's entire "story" and craps on its legacy. F-them.

Dexter was the worst ending. This just felt cheap.

I think this would have been a good ending if the show ended after just a few seasons. Instead, they wore out Robin and Ted and gave us an ending that no one wanted.

I think my biggest beef is that they didn't give us enough of a goodbye to the mother. The way they just glossed over her death really bothered me.

Haven't seen a single episode of the show, but I opened this thread based on Twitter trends because I wanted to see legit fan reaction. Does not look good. The ending sounds terrible and hilarious (in an ****-you-to-our-fans kind of way).

As someone who's only watched a handful of the episodes from each season CBS should have pulled the plug right after Barney talks to his girl in the hospital

That was magic and could have left a hell of a final impression

Everything after that with the wife dying and getting Robin back was pulled from some fan fic on a message board somewhere

Should've had Lily die, then have Marshall marry Tracy. Then Ted and Robin could've gotten married, and people would still be happy.

Overall, I'm not surprised this is the finale. They've dropped lots of hints. Even the forced nature of Barney & Robins relationship towards the end fits in with this ending.

However, they greatly undersold teds sadness at the moms passing. In addition, the Ted I know would have married the mom the second he found out she was pregnant. The waiting thing was just weird. Moreover, is it just me, or does this storyline make more sense in a pre-MySpace/Facebook world (ie the world that existed when they came up with idea, 2004 ish). It is difficult to believe such a tight group of friends would lose track of Robin in a post Facebook world.

Overall, I'm going to have fond memories of the journey. They looked so young in the end credits, it bummed me out. I've turned middle aged with this cast

How did they resolve the whole thing with Ted having the voice of Bob Saget when he gets old? For the last episode did he turn into Bob Saget? What was the deal with that?

Throw me in the worst ending ever crowd. There was nothing I liked about the episode. I agree with pretty much everything said, but one thing I haven't seen mentioned is how they completely tore down the Robin's character the entire show. They made a big deal about how she had become too good, and too busy to hang out with everyone.

The way they developed the characters, I predict Robin and Ted will be broken up w/in six weeks. Robin is too busy for Ted. Ted wants big and grand. Robin wants her career. They gave me no indication that Robin had changed and would settle down.
