The mother dies!

Funny: How I Met Your Mother has brilliantly contrived it so that we'll all be happy with the finale if the Mother just *stays alive*. @weinmanj

Well for better or worse it ends tonight. The writers have set it up to make or break the series on the last episode. Don't F it up...

I think they've done a good job of breaking the series with a few of the latter seasons, but they have a chance to redeem them somewhat and cap off an, at least, better season than the bad ones I referred to (basically, all the seasons where they didn't know if they were being renewed).

But the first few seasons of the show are still great for a multi-camera sitcom, and a lot of the stories, stuff like the hot-crazy scale and cheerleader theory, and slap bet are what will make the series for me anyway.

I think my main interest in tonight is if they can really pull off a satisfying "meeting the mother" moment-- if it can be called a "moment" at all. Will they just meet at the very end or do they meet early enough that you get to see she and Ted actually interact. I feel like it has to be the latter to work for me.

This. I bet the "moment" happens within the first ten minutes of the episode.

I'm actually excited about tonight. It's been mostly enjoyable for 9 years building up to this point, which is something that really makes it different than most sitcoms.

I'm guessing they will start in 2030 and sort of work backwards to where the last thing we see is the actual meeting/ lock eyes across the room moment.

They have to wrap up Ted not going to Chicago, Ted's mom or the mother getting sick or dying or whatever that was, Barney officially meeting the mother, hopefully Marshal and Lily not going to Italy, and I think that's it, but I'm probably forgetting something. One hour should be enough time to give everything its just attention while not stretching everything out like they've had to do this season.

I'm excited about tonight as well. Yes, this season hasn't been nearly as good as some of the old ones, but I think (hope?) they will do a nice job wrapping everything up.

They showed them in Italy at the end of the Daisy episode earlier this season, so they will go there for a year.

I'm hoping they'll show that they were just on a vacation.

Sticking with my prediction he meets the mother at the end of the show and that the final line will be "and that kids, is how I met your mother."

The episode will definitely open and close with the kids on the couch.

Nah, it'll be the kids saying "Thank god he finally finished his story." or "Thanks for making us cry about our dead mom!"

I think he talks to the mother at the train station, introduces himself, and then it will cut to the kids on the couch, and he says something like, "and that kids is how I met your mother."

On this very thread, a video was posted where the actress herself confirmed that the mother won't be dying. It was a terrible attempt at a red herring to begin with and we know that's not how they are going to end the show.

As far as the rest of the comments, count me in the group where I Ted meets her very early in the first episode.

Did they ever wrap up the Marshall/Lily bet about Ted ending up with Robin?

This has been one of my biggest gripes about the latest developments in the past few seasons. What the hell kind of family would move to Italy for a "art" career while just having another newborn when Marshall got a steady job as a judge? Lily always gets her way.

That being said, wasn't there a flash forward when it talks about how Marshall lost his hair where he was a judge? I guess I am still holding out hope that he doesn't cave.

Not saying she does die, but an interview with the actress denying it tells us nothing. Of course she's gonna deny it, especially if it's true.

I don't think so. I remember them making the bet, but what were the stakes?

As far as Marshall, we know he becomes a judge at some point. They've mentioned it and they showed his election party this season. If he ends up turning down this position, it just completely negates about half of his story from this season. But I don't see how he goes back to corporate law without turning down the judge position. Oh well.

She wouldn't flat out lie. She still might be dying, but I think you can rule out her being dead.

The one with the same stupid woman that went to San Francisco for no good reason. Lily is just the worst.

They said they never figured out where the pineapple came from during the original episode. It was wrapped up by showing him studying a pin board about the incident earlier this season.

I don't know that I was ever persuaded much by the "the mother is actually dead!" stuff. Especially now that we're down to the last episode, and considering the episode all about the mother and her dead boyfriend and all that stuff, I would be shocked if they decided to go with some kind of dark ending like that. They be dropping that on the vast majority of viewers who have been simply waiting for (or holding out quitting watching the show based on) a HAPPY moment when Ted finally meets the one.

IMO, if they end the story with the mother actually having been dead the whole time he's been telling it, they'll probably be noted for one of the worst series finales of all time.

They will show the meeting right away, and then a fast forward of different things in their life up to the beginning of the story.
