the comparison is terrible

the premise of friends was not about ross telling his kids (for 9 seasons!) a story of how he met the love of his life and then she died and he ended up with rachel

i think thats where most people feel upset. they built up this awesome girl who was perfect for Ted and then killed her and he ended up with someone that had made him misserable all his life

friends didn't spend 10 season telling us that does and Rachel were wrong for each other. just that they couldn't get over things and see that they were right. they also didn't spend 10 seasons tell us that there was someone perfect for Ross out there, and he just needed to get over Rachel and find her. they also didn't didn't spend the 10th season introducing said perfect woman so that we could could see she was 10 times cooler than Rachel and better for does.

With Friends, you more or less knew/expected that Ross and Rachel would end up together, especially as the show progressed. Ross's "marriages" were done by like season 2 or 3, and then in between then and the end..it was pretty much just Ross and Rachel, with some random hook ups in between.

Once Rachel was pregnant, it was pretty clear what would happen, because unlike how they treated Ted's character, Ross was going to do the right thing.

As others said, that was just a minor plot in the show as well..It wasn't "Friends who become more than Friends", it was just "Friends."

This show was called "How I Met your Mother."

What it really should have been called was, "How I've always wanted to hook up with Aunt Robin."

agree, the ross/rachel comparison is way off.

also, i completely support the writer's rights to end the show however they want. by the same token, the only reason they get to tell the story is because of the fanbase that supports and watches the show. and in my opinion, they lost sight of what made the show popular and instead of adapting and writing something the current audience wanted, they stubbornly stuck with an ending that the audience may have wanted 4 years ago.

again, that's their right. but the audience doesn't have to like it and based on all the feedback we've seen, the overwhelming majority didn't.

Just using some basic math...

200 episodes with 8 minutes of commercials each is 1,600 minutes of watching commercials.

1,600 minutes = 26 hours and 40 minutes.

So it cost a person who watched the show over one entire day of their life just watching commercials to pay for their watching (not to mention the actual time watching the show). Considering how precious our time, I'd say that's a pretty high price that a person paid to stick with it through the end. People have every right to feel invested in a show like this and to have a feeling of disappointment if the payoff wasn't there for their investment into it.

well, i paid a little less. it probably only cost me one minute to fast forward through the eight minutes of commercials each week.

I don't think the Ross/ Rachel comparison is terrible, but I didn't watch Friends regularly so I didn't get sick of Ross and Rachel.

I think the biggest difference is that Friends didn't have a singular story line (supposedly) driving the show like HIMYM. The Robin and Ted relationship has done nothing but prevent Ted from moving on and meeting the mother for the last half(?) of the show. That's why I was so sick of it.

For those of you that liked it, would you have been satisfied with the fan made ending (assuming they took out all the clues about the mother dying)?

Ross and Rachel comparison is horrible. It wasn't the two of them constantly whining about the other and having a "will they, won't they" moment every 4 episodes.

The finale wasn't liked, but it was not overwhelming. Most polls are pretty evenly split from I have seen.

finally was able to watch the finale. here is my simple take:

sure it was not great by any means, and maybe it wasn't even good. but it wasn't nearly as terrible as some of you are making it out to be. I'd grade it a C.

i also don't think the finale ruined the entire series like some of you think.

Marsu seems really invested in defending a TV show - to the point of calling people names.

I am not the one saying I wasted 9 years of my life watching a show. That is pretty sad.

I still think the finale was bad, but as for salvaging my own enjoyment of the show, here are the scenes -not necessarily original ideas- I've added mentally to make it not seem so bad: (these scenes didn't even need dialogue, they could just be short snips within Ted's VoiceOver, and in my head this is probably what happened and the writers just didn't show us)

1-Mother's funeral with all the gang being there to console Ted like they were for Marshall's dad

2-Ted struggling with the single father life (diapers, getting a daughter ready for ballet, wherever the kids were when it happened) and the occasional breakdown

3-Robin helping pick up some slack with the kids when she comes back to town, especially when Ted gets into a funk (what else is she gonna do and the rest of the gang has their own kids to worry about)

4-Robin buying the first of her dogs (maybe with one of the kids) saying that she'd be sticking around for a while

5-Dinner scene with Ted and Robin cooking for the kids and they have a "moment" or "look" or whatever that is the first time Ted has felt something for someone that wasn't Tracy.

6-Ted looking at the sky saying it's time to move on before knocking on Robin's door

Done - I feel better about the ending now

Didn't do the math on ages, that's why I said wherever the kids were in life when it happened... Whatever age appropriate problems a single dad would have...

I'm kind of bummed they didn't show us the scene where Robin floats back down from the sky.

They needed another hour to do it right. Considering half the episodes this season were garbage, they could have pulled it off better.

You guys do realize Ted is 52 years old speaking to his teenage kids about how he met their mother 16 years earlier and getting approval from his teenage kids to date Robin? The actual mother was only mentioned a handful of times, whereas Robin was an integral part of every single story he told.

Why would he spend time talking to his kids about time he spent with their mother, when they were there?

Thank goodness for College Basketball and a rewatch of GOT. I would have not idea what I would have done with my life.

just got to watch the finale. after reading through everyone's reactions, I think we can all agree on one thing, Redstone is still a tool.
