Anybody else wonder if last night's episode lent some more weight to the idea that the mother has already passed away when he's talking to the kids? Noticed he said "I must have heard your mother's rendition of La Vie en Rose a thousand times over the years..."

Grammatically doesn't this still make sense if she's alive and still sings it sometimes?

Could the fact that they recently said they filmed the final scene 8 years ago give any support to the mother being dead theory? They didn't want the kids to look older and the actress who plays the mother would not be in it.

just thinking outloud

Finally an enjoyable episode that moved the story along.

They could use makeup to make her look older.

It wouldn't take much movie magic to splice between her walking in, then cut to the kids looking over to say "Hi mom, dad was just telling us this story" . . . cut to black

I felt like her having to deal with losing someone was foreshadowing of Ted doing the same.

I guess it does - just seemed that was the way they were leaning.

Thought the same thing. I'd say 50/50 chance she dies

So is Barney the one who drove away Lillie? He wasn't in his bed when Ted left the balcony.

If she were dead I don't think they would cut to the whole "annoyed kids" thing sometimes when he's telling them about how he met her.

Excellent episode. Loved the callbacks. Also enjoyed the special title screen and intro.

I don't think she's dead, there's a "future scene" at a reunion or something where Ted is smoking sandwiches with old Lilly and Marshall and he says he can't find his wife. (Granted could be a different wife)

another note to old episodes, there were "save the arcadia" signs up on the building when the mom is loading up her gear.

excellent episode

I wonder if the mother actually was in any random scenes back in the day. Was she a background actor when they were at the club? Or was she actually sitting in the classroom on Ted's first day?

I doubt they'd put forth the effort to do this.

Seeing as how they didn't cast her till last season, I'd say no.

OK, I couldn't remember if they had had her picked out for years or if she was someone that they just decided on in 2013.

I've seen the St. Patrick's day episode a million times. I've always thought to myself how weird it was when Ted bumps into the chick at the club and then nothing really came of it, because it seemed really deliberate that they would show it. Nice to see a callback to that.

I hope they don't go the way of having her already dead as the story is being told...

Agreed. Hadn't even thought of that until this thread. Not a fan.

I think it would be a very unnecessary thing to tack onto the story, and it would also detract away from the culmination of this show. Just my opinion.

She must be out of town. Ted has been telling the story for about 70 hours to his kids so far.

I've been rewatching the last few minutes of this episode all week. Really great performance from Milioti. The song was excellent.

My math might be off, but I think Ted has told all but 2 episodes (200 and Robin's episode). That's 198 stories at around 21 minutes apiece.

I was being sarcastic. Referring to the fact that this is a freaking long story he's telling, and HIMYM should have stopped three seasons ago. After Stella, he should have met the mother and moved on.

If the mother ends up being dead, I will be royally pissed. It wouldn't really fit though with how annoyed and bored the kids acted while hearing it though.

I don't know. I see what you're saying but regardless of how much they might miss their mom, the fact that they're dad started the story 8 years before he ever met her and tells countless off-topic and sometimes inappropriate side stories I could see them getting frustrated and annoyed with the story. If they thought they were hearing about how their dad met their mother but instead keep hearing about how much he was in love with aunt Robin I think they might not be a little fed up with the story.
