I think Jackie nailed it. after this last episode and her mentioning how he lives in the past, tells stories over and over, blah blah, I think she will interrupt him in the last episode as he's wrapping up the story.

Maybe she'll murder Ted for being such a bore.

Maybe Ted is sad because his good friend Lily is missing her kid's wedding because she is dead.

Wishful thinking :/

I recall NPH tweeting something after filming the last episode along the lines of wow, you won't believe it, or something similar.

Gonna be a twist for sure.

Because she's not dead yet. That was in 2024 so their daughter isn't more than 8 or 9 years old (remember the trilogy episode, Ted brings his baby daughter over in 2016). If the mother has been given a terminal diagnosis, they know she won't live long enough to attend their daughter's wedding.

Gotcha, thanks. I missed the date at the start of the episode. I appreciate you not being a ******, like beer baron.

I don't think she is dead or dying. The writers like to throw curve balls (Barney's sister, for example).

Sorry. Your ghost theory made sense with or without the date at the beginning. My bad.

I think they were hinting at the mother knowing she would die soon.

Possible Spoiler

Somewhere on the internet (maybe a few pages back on this thread) I read that the final scene of the show was shot years ago with Ted's kids. Since they hadn't picked the mother yet then it makes me think she is not in it and possibly dead.

I read that they filmed some scenes years ago, not necessarily the final scene. They wanted to get them done so the kids would look the same. The fact that they are really starting to hint at the mother being dead makes me think that she won't be. As someone else said on this page, they love to throw curveballs.

Could Ted have been talking about HIS mom who missed his wedding?

That's what I think it is. Just trying to make people think and throw them off. They will probably mention his mother passing away between now and the end of the show.

no way this show ends with one of the main cast members dying.

I bet it was his mom. They are SCREWING with you guys

They could have filmed the scenes of having the kids look over with someone reading the lines of "enough story telling kids, Ted" and then it cuts to the Mother.

I don't consider the mother a main cast member. We were just introduced to her this year and we've barely seen her.

No worries, I was being passive aggressive and I shouldn't have been. I apologize for my lack of manners.

As far as the plot goes, I think Ted's Mom is the one that died before his wedding.

The other reason I don't think it is the Mother is because they originally made the series with the possibility of Victoria being the mother if the series was cancelled after one season. I just don't see them killing off the Mom after spending 8 years talking about Teds epic journey to meet the Mom.

Plus, what kind of Dad would tell a bunch of random hook-up stories/dating stories to his kids when their Mom either just died or died a few years ago or is in the process of dieing.

another reason I don't think it's the mother is because throughout the series they reference Lillie, Marshall, Ted and the mother sitting on the porch growing old all together. I bet we see a flash forward of that in the last 3 episodes.

...now of course they may do a flash forward of the three of them without the mother, but I doubt it since it was such a central theme throughout the series

Possible Spoiler:

The mom eventually commits suicide because she's incapable of dealing with the events of her childhood down in Louisiana. The final haunting scene of the series is her eyes: You can still read them, and you know what you see? She welcomed it, mm-hmm, not at first, but right there in the last instant. It's an unmistakable relief. See, because she was afraid and now she sees for the very first time how easy it was to just let go.

Additionally, Barney's full name is Barney Carcosa Stinson and his family has lived in Bro'bridge for a long, long time.

Can someone remind me the genesis of "No Can Dosville, Baby Doll."? Was that just a catch phrase that Stella's new husband wrote for Chris Kattan to make Jed Mosely look like a jackass, or was it somehow rooted in truth like the red boots?

If they drag out the story of how he met the mother for 9 years only to kill her off right after we meet her I'll be pissed. However, I don't think they will.

This episode gave at least five theories.

1. She's dying in 2024.
2. He's dying in 2024.
3. Teds mom died prior to his wedding.
4. She has a health scare in 2024 but will be fine.
5. Ted was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's.

Old married couple talk at young age
Mom worried Ted gets involved in his stories (talking about the past).
The end scene where Ted is very sad about the daughter wedding line from his wife. She didn't say it to be mean, even though it hit Ted hard.

Her attitude has been strong, supportive. Ted was very emotional.

Note. Crossword episode where future Ted and mom watch Ted play crossword. He screams Vesuvius out load, but word didn't fit. Ergo, this episode doesn't fit and what we think isn't close.

Could it be that the mother's mom died before the wedding?

Or maybe that Ted and the mother meet, instantly fall in love and run off and get married, but Ted's mom can't make it to the wedding because she's off with Clint?

I really don't think they're killing the mother. Or Ted.

I have it from a VERY reliable source that Marshall is not in the final episode. His last day on set was before it was shot.

People keep saying this but I think we're blowing it out of proportion. There's no reason to think that EVERYTHING we see as viewers is being told to his kids. we go long stretches without narration.

Not likely. What if Chandler wasn't in the Friends finale? Or Kramer wasn't in the Seinfeld finale?

Not happening.

Whether it's a red herring or not, introducing a pivotal character dying in the last 3 episodes is just lazy writing. It's even worse if it is a fake out.

they should have realized around season 3 what a dumb, completely unnecessary mess they were creating. the easy fix then would have been to dump bob saget and the kids, rename the show from "how i met your mother" to just HIMYM, and then just made it about the NYC adventures of the 5 of them.

A lot of people in this thread admit to watching the show simply because they're invested and want to see how they tie everything together with the mother. Their strategy worked.
