Wow. That sounds mind-numbingly dumb.

Why are you guys so surprised? You could see this ending a mile away.

Not surprised, just hoping for better.

Plus, just because it happened as many predicted doesn't make it any better.

That was really good.

But still debating whether I liked it.

My only complaint is that I feel like we lost Barney. But had to get rid of him to end with Ted at Robin's doorstep with the Smurf *****

Holy ****, I can't believe they just did that. That just ruins whatever left of the series that hadn't been ruined already. I doubt I will even watch reruns on TV anymore.

That just completely invalidated the entire last season of the show. I can't believe that this show that started out so great the first 4-5 seasons and then slowly went downhill until this disaster of the last season, capped off by this terrible finale. Worse than Dexter's finale.

A puppy dying of AIDS wouldn't be worse than the Dexter finale.

I actually liked the HIMYM ending. Life isn't always happily ever after, and the daughter was right about how the story was never really that much about the mom since she was barely in it.

Was this the ending they had in mind all along? I'm assuming the last scene with the kids had to have been filmed back when it started because there's no way they look anything like that anymore.

As terrible as it possibly could be. Their refusal to let us get any real connection with the mother, save one episode, at least makes sense, but that doesn't make it any less horrible of an idea. Craig and Carter must not be interested in syndication money, and now it makes sense why they've never been able to get another show off the ground after many attempts.

We'd all be better off if this had died in season 1 and he ended up with Victoria and we moaned about how this show was canceled too soon.

I read they filmed the final scene with the kids back during the second season, and they knew all along what the ending was going to be

That a great and all but they should have named it differently if that was the whole point.

Folks are upset because the finale ruined the entire series. Almost every episode was about Ted pining about not meeting the mother and they end with him going back to the woman that never really wanted to be with him. That is a cop out.

Okay, maybe I exaggerated there. But I still hate this. It doesn't have to be happily ever after to have a good ending. But basically writing off Barney and having Ted get back with Robin is ridiculous in my mind.

The entire last season was based around a wedding that ended in a divorce. The divorce could happen even, but then don't spend an entire last season with the wedding as the setting. Everything doesn't have to be peachy, but don't just jump back to the stupid Ted and Robin stuff that they supposedly shut that down twice in the last season.

This finale was terrible. Literally ruined the entire series, forever.

Absolutely! I can’t recall a show I was so invested in ending on a worse note. Absolutely changed the whole tone and message of the entire show.

Exactly. To me that’s what makes it extra crappy. All the bull@#$ about how he was telling the kids the story about meeting their DEAD mother – was really a story about how he’s ALWAYS been in love with Aunt Robin and would have ended up with her sooner if it just hadn’t been for that other lady that gave birth to them.

Just crappy. F them.

In all fairness though, this season hammered and hammered and hammered that Robin and Ted should not be married.

I wasn't happy with this episode the whole way through, save a few funny parts, but I told my wife that maybe they could pull it all together in the last 10 minutes...

Instead they decide to stomp it into the ground and ruin anything that was left of the story that they'd been telling for the last 9 years...

What was the thought behind having him wait for 5 years and 2 kids before having him marry her? Because everything had to be "perfect"? And it wasn't "perfect" mainly just bc SHE WASN'T ROBIN, but then they cranked out another kid and this is somehow supposed to make me root for Ted and Robin as star-crossed lovers? Great decisions, guys.

IMO, the ending was terrible, especially since much of the show preceding it was so good.

But it explains why they made her into a saint.

very, very cheap writing. i actually laughed as it was going down. it's like they wrote the last season hungover as all hell hoping it was passable. i mean, they made robin into a theoretical balloon just to turn around and "surprise" us.

There has been more movement on this thread than I expected; I also didn't realize it would be the end post of the prior page. Please be sure to read my analysis (very end of Page 22).

So in the end, the overarching storyline is this:

- Bob Saget sits down to tell his kids the story of how he meets their dead mother. Could be touching for the kids. They get to hear this story of how their parents met.
- He then proceeds to spend all his time telling stories of all the girls he screwed before their mom came around. He was careful to highlight moving and touching stories like how many times he and Robin had sex when they first started dating. Every few stories, he really stresses how much he has always loved Aunt Robin.
- He tells a story or two about their real mother, who has since passed on.
- Proceeds to basically let them know he actually always loved Robin, now he wants her again. Basically, in the grand scheme of things, the mother was just a distraction that took his mind off the woman he always loved: Robin.

The mother becomes marginalized. Show should be called "How I met your future stepmother". As someone said earlier, I guess the writers don't want much syndication money off of this one.

Not going to thumbs up or thumbs down.

I think it made sense that he ended up back on Robin's porch with the blue french horn. Seeing as the writers conceptualized the ending 9 years ago, this shouldn't have been a surprise.

When they showed Robin at the party alone and down in the dumps about what the group of friends became to her, it was clear they were setting up for her to reunite with the group in a grand fashion, though I didn't think at the time it meant she would be with Ted.

It also kinda makes sense given what Josh Radnor and the directors have said the past few weeks regarding what the show is "really" about... ie the quest for the mother should be thought of as secondary to the great times and growing experiences of a group of close friends.

The problem is the quest for the mother and the happy ending for Ted is a large reason why viewers kept tuning in when the content at clearly taken a downturn. They also developed the mother's character too well... in that it was extremely sad to learn that she had passed. Yet two seconds after we learn she passed, the kids were talking about him getting back with Aunt Robin. It happened way too quickly from a viewer standpoint. Lastly, I don't understand why they'd theme the whole final season around a wedding that was ultimately worthless.

Oh well. I don't feel cheated. But I don't feel satisfied either.
