My first thought was his mother. But it makes sense it's the mother. She said not to dwell on stories but when he got emotional she wanted him to tell another story.

Didn't the hotel clerk greet both of them at the beginning of the episode? I thought he said, "Hello Mr and Mrs Mosby, welcome back!"

I guess there could be some twist we're not seeing but I'm pretty convinced the mother is dead or dying.
1) Ted getting emotional about mother not being at his children's wedding (that's how I took it at least)
2) her saying she didn't want him living in his stories
3) her saying that sometimes it's best not to say anything and just enjoy the moment of being with someone.

I agree, it seems pretty crappy. Why not just start at the weekend of the wedding? Why do you have to start the story 8 years prior and talk about how in love you were with aunt Robin for years (and even a day before meeting their mom)?
Seems weird, maybe the writers address this in the next 3 episodes.

5 years ago I would have assumed Craig and Carter were trolling and setting up a great fakeout. A lot of mediocrity since makes me think they aren't.
Also the song at the end. Something along the lines of "if you see her, say hello" and "don't forget me"

Yeah... I get that. I am generally wouldn't have a problem with it, but if they're going to end the series with her being dead it seems like a real crappy way to tell the story. If she's alive, it's just an odd way for the dad to tell it (although talking about how much he was in love with aunt robin the whole time still seems weird to me).

She isn't dead yet but is dying.
Because she's not dead yet. That was in 2024 so their daughter isn't more than 8 or 9 years old (remember the trilogy episode, Ted brings his baby daughter over in 2016). If the mother has been given a terminal diagnosis, they know she won't live long enough to attend their daughter's wedding.
and Ted started telling the kids in 2030. so it looks like she dies sometime between 2024 and 2030.

Why hasn't Ted fixed the taillight yet? It has to mean he and the mother are trying to mend a broken relationship.
I think Ted is the one dying. It would still make sense that Ted would cry because he's missing his daughters wedding. He's Ted. He would cry over something like that. Also, it makes more sense that Ted would spend so much time telling stories about his life. If his mother is dying/dead, then I think the stories would focus more on her and their time together.

My wife and I had that conversation tonight, and it does make some sense. But I think her comment about not wanting him to live in his stories or that life moves forward makes me think it's not him.
I think it's too early to lay their cards on the table. Probably going for the fake out.

I think it's more a symbol that Ted has been so focused on finding a wife that everything else in his life is broken.

they're going to keep letting us think she's dead, might even let us see the doctor telling her she's dying, etc., but then the last scene of the series is going to be ted talking to the kids and the mom is going to interrupt and comment about ted taking forever to tell stories.
