Trump is saying Iran is reaching out to the US requesting negotiation. They want to go back and discuss a new Nuclear deal. Will Trump agree and let the Ayotollah off the hook if he gets what he wants in a Nuke deal and start lifting sanctions? That seems like a tough pill to swallow after so many people died protesting for regime change.

Blow the Ayotollah into 1000 pieces and negotiations will go much easier.

I don't think Trump is big enough of an idiot to take anything Iran says seriously.

And reading through that article, Iran is just sour that Trump plays the game the same way they do.

This is Iran's normal stall tactic. They will stall negotiations for 3 years and hope for a democratic president or a US isolationist like Vance to get into office and then throw up the middle finger during negotiations.

Trump is just waiting on further prep and intelligence info imo. He's not going to negotiate anything at this point with the Mullah's . They have very little negotiating leverage left and they have shown over and over that they are not trustworthy negotiators anyway. They are done and it's just a matter of when and how , and optimizing the outcome .

This guy is saying Iran is moving anti-ship missiles to the coast. (Which is where I would have assumed they were anyway.) Saber rattling? Or planning an attack on one of our warships? Anyone seeing other reporting about this?

Is it the Noor missile? It doesn't seem difficult for our fleet to stay outside the range of that Iranian missile and still be able to pound ground targets with airpower

Respectfully, that guy's a clown. If the Iranians are moving ANY gear around right now, day or night, we are watching it closely and quite likely want them to be in movement so we know where exactly it is.

One could make an argument that the general outcome will be the same for the Mullah's if they attack our naval assets or not so from their perspective why not go out in a blaze of "glory". From the perspective of their military underlings that may not be the case.

I think she is a little optimistic Bu as opposed to a lot of ME countries, Iran has lots of Muslims who are "culturally" Muslim, but not that observant. Frankly, much like the US is now mostly "culturally" Christian.

Yes, can't really argue with you on those points at all. Will be interesting to see how it breaks down/out:
Quote:

History offers a warning. Yugoslavia long presented itself as and was widely understood to be a pluralistic, multiethnic state. Many Yugoslavs embraced that identity sincerely. Yet when the regime collapsed in the early 1990s, the identity dissolved almost overnight. People called themselves Yugoslavs one day only to wake up the next as Serbs, Croats or Bosnians. Such arrangements can persist for decades until, suddenly, they do not. Long-suppressed ethnic identities surfaced, and politics turned violent.

In Yugoslavia, the hegemonic Serbs made up roughly 36 percent of the population. In Iran, Persians account for a larger share but are almost certainly still a minority. A 2010 Iranian government study put them at 47 percent.

Iran's ethnic geography sharpens the stakes. Persians dominate the central plateau around Tehran and Isfahan. Minority populations concentrate along the borders more accurately, astride them bound by language, culture and history to communities just across the frontier. Azerbaijanis cluster in the northwest along Azerbaijan and Turkey; Kurds in the west face Kurdish regions of Iraq and Turkey; Arabs in the oil-rich southwest look toward Iraq; Baluch in the southeast connect to kin in Pakistan and Afghanistan; Turkmen in the north border Turkmenistan.

Just spitballing that they really are 47 percent Persian, I'd swag that less than a third of those are 'true believer' moslems, and of those, there are actually some moderate Shia sects that are not too extreme at all (we actually had one who posted on R/P forum I think who was an adherent to such a sect, can't remember his handle).

Anyway, the crackdown bought time, not stability for the regime. The underlying economic issue isn't going away for them. More absolute idiocy from 'our friends' the Saudi's:

With a mighty Mi8 and some ancient Bell Jet Ranger helo's (non-navalized) for added fear-factor.

BBC: Trump warns 'time is running out' for Iran.
Quote:

Referring to the US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites last June, which was launched during Iran's 12-day war with Israel, Trump warned: "The next attack will be far worse! Don't make that happen again."

Earlier on Wednesday, before Trump's comments, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said: "Conducting diplomacy through military threat cannot be effective or useful."

"If they [the US] want negotiations to take shape, they must certainly set aside threats, excessive demands and raising illogical issues," he said in televised remarks, translated by the AFP news agency.

Relatively minor aside; Bibi snipes at Biden-era 'embargo' of arms shipments to Israel that cost IDF lives.

Board of Peace going to have some work to do.

In all seriousness, the BoP that Rubio again confirmed to Senate just now that it is focused on Gaza rebuild. If investments indeed happen in Gaza, then you can see potential for "westernized" revitalization of some of these areas.

ZERO reason why Turkey, Iran, Egypt, Syria and Lebanon cannot be made part of civilized society again. They once were and not all that long ago.

To hell with Afghanistan. Either depopulate it and use it for resources, or wall it off and let the goatherders fight for the next couple millenia.

How? Currency collapse, huge poverty rate, unemployment, water resource mismanagement and on and on. Throwing more money at them hasn't worked.

Cause you don't give the money to the local regimes. As they are doing with Venezuela, you keep control of money going out of any bank account you fund.

You won't fix it with money. You fix it with regime changes. stability then money. Will it work? Who knows. But most of those countries have potential to be decent places and have been in recent memory.

60 years ago Jackie O was leading efforts to raise millions to move statues in Egypt because of the Aswan dam flooding ancient sites.

I am hopeful, cautious, but hopeful. Its not impossible.

My mother in law in Tehran was able to call us from her landline this week. Landlines are assumed to be monitored by the Islamist occupiers of Iran, so we stuck to pleasantries and talking about her future grandson (doodle tala). The Iranian diaspora is getting frustrated with the President. I am hopeful that Trump will take decisive action soon, and that it will be a highly effective action. I am generally considered a CM or something left of that on this board, but I fully support the President on this topic and understand no other president would be able to pull off bringing hope and freedom to the people of occupied Iran.

Without an actual Civil War, it won't matter the Islamist overlords are not going to disappear. The fundamentalist country folk will not allow it.
