We can kill a high number of our targets but what then? You won't kill them all and there will likely be enough hardliners left to keep the regime going by escalating the violence. There has to be some kind of strong opposition on the ground after any strikes for it to have a lasting effect.

Soften up the command and control and take out major hardware, then let the millions of angry Iranians mop up the rest with little resistance.

It's more of a case that they are considerably more quiet at 20Kn vs 30kn. Subs don't like to make noise that might give away their presence, position, or detectable acoustic data about themselves unless it is necessary. I'm sure they probably just hand off responsibility to a boat in the region and do major relocation without a shadowing attack boat in transit. I was just saying there are reasons that -15-20 knots transit is more the norm instead of a faster speed. Lots of factors have to be adjusted for to go faster. They'll get there with more fuel to operate on station while logistics are adjusted to accommodate.

Maybe a sub that snuggles up to an entire carrier group it can make as much noise as it wants.

Not likely. Each ship makes its own acoustic signature. Anything out of the ordinary could be documented or tracked if anyone is paying attention. Of course, subs aren't perfectly quiet, they are just more quiet than the ambient noise around them.

Sort of related: I remember one of the criticisms of the Tom Clancy novels was that all of the high tech equipment was always working at a high level with no malfunctions, ever.

actually that is not credible at all.

HAARETZ is the Israeli version of the San Francisco Chronicle.

far left- no real sources in a right wing government and lies every day to bring down the Netanyahu Administration.

I got a laugh the first time I heard CIWS really stood for "Christ, it won't shoot!" (That's "Close-In Weapons System" or Phalanx aboard ship, often said as "See-Whiz.")

I have a hat somewhere for the Dallas. A friend of mine served aboard.

In one of the early battle scenes in Red Storm Rising, the Nimitz takes a hit from a couple of Russian missiles because the CIWS can't decide which one to engage first and instead recycles and engages neither.

Au contraire. Unless Clancy changed that in a later edition. I read that book when it first came out. Way before the movie. Dallas tried to come between the Red October and the torpedos by doing an emergency blow but the torpedo followed them and struck.

I have read it many times as well (I used to use it as my "go to sleep" book), and in my version, Dallas uses their MOSS decoy to try to distract the Alfa, then lights it up with their under ice sonar for the Red October to see it. RO turns and rams the Alfa. The scene ends with both Dallas and Red October surfacing while the Alfa sinks.

not a single person has even mentioned the ACTUAL way to win a brutal insurgency taking place in built up civilian neighborhoods

DO WHAT THE ISRAELIS DID

AND HAVE DRONES 24 HOURS A DAY OVERHEAD FIRING HELLFIRE MISSILES AT THE TERRORISTS

LOL, Iran is a tad larger/more difficult to control from some drones vs. Gaza City or Khan Younis which the Israeli's were only partially able to subdue, separately, and in combination with ground forces and massive surveillance/border control locally.

And that's not a knock on what the IDF has, net, been able to achieve in Gaza, just that it is not even that simple in Iran. I prefer to check all sides media, and see what is going on reading 'between the lines.'

Starving the IRGC/Basij of paychecks though, as I think is happening, will help a lot once a real operation is launched. Sepah Bank HQ?

Yep, my version circa 1989 is the same.

hopefully this is a sign that an attack is coming:

KLM
Air France
British Airways

this afternoon stop flying to Israel and across Iranian territory.

still several aircraft over Iranian air space including Air Mahan

NOT A SINGLE AIRCRAFT over Israeli air space or even approaching Ben Gurion Airport

that is highly unusual.
LMCane
How long do you want to ignore this user?
you can easily target the southern Iranian towns and villages first-

it's not like there are dug in SS Divisions in the Italian mountains.

the Basij and IRGC are literally using pickup trucks as "technicals" with mounted machine guns.

just move your way north clearing the city centers of IRGC forces- it's not that hard.

we have SNIPR pods which can see a license plate at 70 miles distance!

Fingers and toes crossed that you're right.

They don't cancel flights for nothing, especially when it's not weather-related.

Since their bank burned down maybe Mossad has the backup bank (irony) stocked with poison chedda.

Oddly, everybody is much quieter than usual except Domino's and Papa John's which are both much busier than usual.

It will be interesting to watch that indicator late tonight...

And unless I'm imagining things, when this indicator started being followed, I think it was called the "Domino's" indicator, or am I misremembering?

I would think overwhelming demand in a short period of time could only be met by one of the biggest two or three pizza places, not the local Mom and pops....
