Wow.

Big boom...

Really really big boom.

Gotta lead it just a bit more.

No leading with a 48. It has its own sonar and acquires actively. It's almost impossible to escape an ADCAP. British torpedoes are very good too.

"Quiet Death" isn't quiet once the fish is in the water. The sonar shack of Knox-class frigates has a hatch that opens port side just behind the forward launcher. The team always joked they'd be the first over the side once they heard that sound through the headphones or saw it on the scope.

I know two weeks ago USS Georgia was out there in the Indian Ocean as part of the Abraham Lincoln battle group

looks like the Iranians did not even know it was coming.

but in reality-

that crew and Captain of the US sub are going to be hazed mercilessly at the VFW for striking the woeful Iranians too close to the stern and not directly amidships!

does it home in on the loudest part of the target? If so makes sense that it would hit the screws on a moving ship

It can also be controlled via a wire from the sub, at least out to a certain distance.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

It's possible, but isn't Georgia an SSGN? They'd be using it for Tomahawks, not hunting ships.

Which attempt?

I saw links showing the PA attempt. Not sure where the tie in is though. I thought that guy was a solo nutjob.

Noise does attract the 48 but it also pings with active sonar. That is why our subs shoot at a safe distance with a safety fence in place before the sub goes from passive search to active search - a reattack on the firing sub is possible. It acquires and doesn't GAF. So hitting the screws is really likely since they are noisy AF.

EDIT: Like Rapier mentioned above, we do control them with a wire so we can "Steer the weapon" if we want to. Once it acquires and goes active, we normally cut the wire and let it hunt on its own.

It's more likely to be a SSN. The Georgia's Tomahawks are going to be needed off the coast of Iran.

Yes, but the Ohio class carries the MK48 torpedo as well so its possible the Georgia was the sub.

Does anyone have a pic of our fleet and how it currently looks over there? And if so, could you please post it?

It would be cool to see what the fleet looks like right now in all its glory.

I mean, if that periscope type view is real, doesn't it appear that the entire stern of the ship is broken apart? The other images of the ship on fire don't seem to support that type of destruction.

Am I seeing the video incorrectly?

Could have been two torpedoes fired and we are seeing the first hit. Or disabled with a Harpoon then sunk with a torpedo? Not sure.

An actual picture? They only get close enough for pictures when specifically doing a photo op.

Mk 48's explode under the target using pressure and gas to break the target.

And the periscope is a camera that can zoom.

Maybe the IRGC is wanting Israel to gaza-fy Tehran. If for no other reason than IRGC are masters of human suffering. Anything to foment hate for Israel more so than the ayatollah. And make the build back cost so much greater - making the rule of the IRGC seem competent. Just a thought

Seeing reports online that a major US ballistics missile detection facility in Qatar has been destroyed. Did I miss that on here?

If you've never heard active sonar in real life, it is one of the most frightening, freaky sounds you can hear. It's like it's in your head and coming from everywhere all at once.

the first time in 81 years a US submarine crew has heard an enemy warship tear itself apart.

I hope there is more video

and I don't feel sorry for those Iranian Sailors- they volunteered and were the elite of their navy

the problem with that hypothesis is that the Iranian civilians WANT the IDF to smash the hell out of their IRGC oppressors

every video shows civilians laughing and clapping with every bomb explosion

I think you are referencing the Soleimani corvette we also took out. That one was a smoker. There ain't no coming back for that frigate - it broke into at least three sections.

More info and demo of the mk48. Modern torpedos don't usually hit the target physically torpedo to side of ship.
