To the extent anyone cares, PGMOL said the Cunha goal shouldn't have been given. But IFAB's website says self-deflections aren't handballs unless the deflection scores, or the player that deflected scores immediately after:

"A handball offence is not committed when a player:

heads, kicks or plays the ball with another part of their body and it then hits their own hand/arm (unless the ball goes directly into the opponents' goal or the player scores immediately afterwards)"

So, I don't know, make of it what you will. I will say, it's kind of weird for a shot to not be a handball only because it doesn't go in, if a rebound from that shot leads to a shot that then goes in. But… I mean, that seemingly follows from what IFAB says.

(We've exceeded my ability to care about two points that don't really help us in any way that really matters and one point that wouldn't really matter to Forest, but… FYI).

If anyone cares about England (which isn't me, but many of the journalists I follow on Twitter seem to be listening to "It's Coming Home" again), Maguire and Shaw miss the England squad, but Mainoo makes it per early reports ahead of the official announcement tomorrow

I don't think Palmer, Foden, Grealish are surprises. Dunk getting called up over Maguire is pretty surprising

I'm admittedly kind of an England hater (they are very entertaining when they lose)… Tuchel's selections are generally making me happy. lol. (E.g. Dan Burn and Jordan Henderson are called up lol; they've been selected a lot under Tuchel, but… boy, I don't know).

Ivan Toney? What the hell?

Selfishly, I'm glad Harry gets a summer off to rest that 33 year old body of his but that's got to be devastating for him. I haven't watched a lot of Newcastle this season but I highly doubt that, at 34, his season was so much better than Maguire's as to make up for his complete lack of big game experience (6 caps compared to Maguire's 66).

You're upset at Rashford because he wasn't happy with the parade of clowns we had for managers for a few years?

He tried really hard to stay in Manchester and make it work. Fresh air was good for him and probably best for team, not sure why you would be upset about that.

Rashford got a lot of **** from a lot of people. Fans. Managers. The club. He's not blameless but wouldn't expect him to thank United for making the WC roster when he clearly had no chance of making the WC in his last days at United.

Last day of the season so might as well end it with a transfer rumor. Reports in Italy suggest that United have agreed to a deal with Atalanta over Ederson. 48m EUR + 5m. Ederson missed the final game of the season and manager explicitly stated it was because there was transfer interest in the player.

He was rumored last season but nothing materialized. The Athletic recently did a lengthy profile of United's transfer targets. Here's what they have to say about him. He sounds more like an Ugarte replacement as he's not nearly as pass progressive as Casemiro.

"Atalanta's Ederson profiles somewhere between Fernandes and Baleba.

The 26-year-old is active in hoovering up danger clocking up his fair share of tackles and interceptions but also reads the game well with a high volume of ball recoveries to get his side back on the front foot. The Italy-based Brazil international is arguably stronger at retaining possession than countryman Casemiro, often keeping his passes shorter to feet with an ability to punch the ball forward to runners ahead of him.

Ederson is the sort of player managers adore, patrolling the pitch between both boxes. He might not always get the headlines, but he is a crucial cog in the wider team dynamic that allows others around him to play at full tilt."

Well, if you want transfer rumors… this account has been referenced by Laurie Whitwell of the Athletic. I'm not sure who it is, but they have broken stuff like recently the 2+1 structure of Carrick's contract. Anyway, they seem to have some access. They are pushing West Ham's Fernandes as giving us priority (assuming they go down). Regardless, there does seem to be a lot of smoke around Fernandes, including from a West Ham insider account that I don't know because I'm not a West Ham fan. (Disclaimer: I want this to be true because I really like the player even before we got linked). I kind of think Ederson and Fernandes could be agreed before the WC even starts… ok I will shut up before I jinx it more. (Obvious potential flaw: I'm relying on Tottenham Hotspur to not be Spursy and screw everything up.)

Saw the Fernandes rumor as well but seems less advanced due to West Ham's situation. If they manage to stay up, the rumor is they'll want 80-90m for him. They spent 40m on him less than a year ago and he still has a long contract. United might pass at that level. But if they go down I'm guessing maybe 60m would be enough?

FWIW, here's what the Athletic has to say about him.

"Some United fans might scoff at the idea of recruiting a player from a relegation-battling side, but West Ham United's Mateus Fernandes has been one of the most consistent performers in an otherwise difficult season for the east Londoners.

Nuno Espirito Santo's side saw a notable uptick in form since the turn of the year, and Fernandes' control from midfield was integral to them doing so. While previously used in an advanced midfield role by Southampton, the 21-year-old has shown how well-rounded he is this season.

As shown by his heatmap, few areas of the pitch are off-limits as he goes searching for the ball with his first thought often to look forward when he is able to retrieve possession.

Fernandes' skill set evokes comparisons with Paris Saint-Germain's Vitinha at times, with his diminutive frame and technical quality able to influence the tempo of a game when given the opportunity.

The Portugal international is being tracked by United, with The Athletic revealing West Ham are expected to sell him this summer. He does not have a release clause but West Ham would want to make a good profit on the 38million they paid Southampton for him last August."

Yeah, I don't think it happens if they stay up. He's still on low wages, so they won't need to sell if they stay up. And he starts basically every game at West Ham, so he won't need a move too badly either.
