Since the other one has fallen off, and Spring Training has begun, let's get another thread going for the best division in baseball.

And to start it off, happy birthday to Evan Longoria's brand new baby girl Elle Leona Longoria, born earlier today.

will never feel sorry for horseface or the mfy, but damn that's a lot of attrition to start the season

I said something on politics that I would have thought was rather rude and inappropriate, but apparently has gone without comment thus far.

Sweet.

Rude and inappropriate is standard operating procedure on the Politics board.

True. But I figured that implying that someone's wife was a cheating hoar would be more verboten.

Looks like Papi will miss the opener. Inflamed heel. I hope it isn't serious!

solid article by Stark focusing on what will make or break this season for the Sox IMO. If the starting pitching bounces back to near 2007 levels, could be a fun summer.

Anybody have any thoughts on vernon wells to the mfy? Have the details come out yet as to how much money the angels are eating and what prospects the mfy are having to give up?

I wouldn't say it reeks of desperation, but there is a strange, vaguely sweaty stench in the air.

I don't blame NYY at all; LAA is paying a bulk of the salary and Cashman has put together one of the worst farm systems in the game.

Not much choice, really.

Man I really hope the Sox break camp with Jackie Bradley on the roster and starting in LF till Ortiz comes back.

I know all the experts say it's dumb to have him start the year with the big club cuz it starts his FA clock a year early, but the kid is raking and I think having him in the lineup might really spark the team and help get the season off to a decent start.

The Rays are always in the same boat with their young players. I'm fine with leaving Myers in the minors until the present need lines up with future considerations.

And, in Toronto Blue Jay news, Ricky Romero was optioned to the minors to start the season. That guy has fallen hard from where he was a couple of years ago.
Dropkicked Murphy

I know with all the new guys they brought in that the Jays are supposed to be really good this year, but it will still be weird seeing them at the top of the standings if they are actually able to meet expectations

too bad we don't have a resident jays fan on the thread to discuss them this year

All that being said, I like the rays to win the division as long as Longoria doesn't miss considerable time again.

it's not the greatest, but it was ranked number 10 in ESPN

quote:
It's a top-heavy system, but the group of position players who started in low Class A Charleston last year, some of whom finished in high-A Tampa, could produce as many as three above-average or better regulars plus several other guys who'll have big league value. They'd rank even higher had they not lost two major starting pitching prospects to season-long injuries, with one, Manny Banuelos, probably out now until 2014.

By the way, ranked ahead of the EVERY AL EAST team not named the rays

If there was anything in baseball more subjective than grading farm systems, MLB tried to fix that by taking away the fake-to-third-throw-to-first move.

So the Tampa Yankees are good? Sweet.

Totally a top 10 system. Recent home growns:

Ichiro
Colon
Garcia
Overbay
Wells
Lowe
Francisco
Youkilis
JRivera

Just to name a few.

So yeah, it's pretty obvious that when the Yanks need to fill a hole, they use their top 10 farm system.

are you really trying to say that the yankees are the only team that gets scrap heap players when they need to plug holes? if i didnt have work i'd go and research this for you on the orioles and other teams.
corleoneAg99

Top 10 systems fill at least some of their holes, yet the Yankees haven't been able to do that.

If I didn't know better, I'd say the Yankee system is horribly overrated, especially when you care about results.

But the Yanks aren't ever overrated.

So like I said, I stand corrected. The facts show I'm WAY off on the Yankees farm system.
LeonardSkinner
How long do you want to ignore this user?
He's not saying the Yankees are the only team that does that. He's just saying that, if they were a bona fide top ten farm system, they wouldn't need to do it as much as others.

It's fine that the Tampa Yankees are a good squad. But they're a Single-A club. I don't know what Law's criteria are for ranking the systems, but it seems a little odd that most of the players that he's basing the Yankees' ranking on likely won't have an impact on the major league club for 2+ years.

To me, and not having a insider subscription, a good system would have a couple of guys in AAA who would contribute this year and be full-fledged contributors and stars in the coming years, and a couple of guys at each level below that would just step up to the next rung on the ladder each season.

No offense, but do you just twist my words to make it seem like I think the Yankees have no holes? They have plenty. Not many people are expecting this to be a 90 win team. They have depth issues at the AAA level and the prospects will arrive in 2014, a year later than most expected. I'm pretty damn realistic about this team and always have been. The farm system has some very good high ceiling prospects but they're not ready yet to see if they'll hit the ceiling. Sure, cash man has made some big mistakes over the past 2 years in regards to some prospects, no one is disputing that, but the farm system has ranked between 10-14 on every major publication, so there's a consensus that it doesn't suck

AAA is for rehab and quick "get ready" starts for the AA studs on their immediate way up to the big club.

The quality of your high A and AA teams are what's key.

I have no idea about the Yanks, but they have a history of good draft philosophy.
corleoneAg99

Yet it's a philosophy that hasn't yielded a new crop of home growns in quite some time.

Free agency has supplemented their roster since the days when Jeter, Posada, Mo, Pettite, Bernie, etc, came out of the system.

Again, im sure it's not that their system is overrated.

Cashman is just pacing himself.

The Rays would certainly disagree with this. Durham (AAA) is going to have 2-3 MLB ready pitchers, at least one of next year's middle infielders, and a dark horse 2013 ROY candidate in the outfield. Plus 2-3 AAAA players who will take turns in Tampa as events dictate.

Conversely, you might not have anyone in Montgomery (AA) that's on the 40 man roster.

The Rays had five prospects in MLB.com's top 100. Three will see time in the majors this season, one will be starting in AAA and the other will be in AA. The next five most highly rated prospects are all in the A-AA range.

For comparison, the Yankees put three into the top 100 prospects; all three are expected to be A-AA players this season.
