1. In your opinion based on what you've seen fredo post in the last 3-4 years, could a reasonable assumption be made by a casual observer that he takes more than a casual interest in the texas rangers organization?
2. Do you believe that simply being born in a random area is the only legitimate tie to being a fan of a team in that region?
I submit these 2 questions to AK, chowdah, txag11, sapper, fincagsdad, BW xaggie, and whoever else has been regulary posting on this thread during the time that fredo has been here
1. I don't read the Ranger threads because I don't follow the Rangers nor do I live in Dallas. So I can't say.
However, following doesn't necessarily mean fandom. When I lived in Chicago, I watched the Cubs. Didn't make me a fan of them. I like baseball so I enjoyed watching them. So I don't see an issue. It is really more strange that you DON'T follow them seeing as they are YOUR hometown team.
2. Only? No.
A mother will be the fan of her son's team. You have kids that are on a team?
If someone's parents are military and they move every 3 or 4 years, they may not have any real attachment to any one location and many of their assignments aren't in areas with any team anyway (having been a military brat and then in the military I've seen this first hand). I can see that the parental/family ties could offer a grounding for them. Was your dad in the military?
But the bottom line is that you should be a fan of your own home town if your home town has a team. If you don't really have a home town (military kids, business movers etc) they'll adopt a team. But Corleone is from Maryland. He lives in Dallas. So, he follows the Rangers (as you contend) but is a FAN of his hometown team the O-holes.
I am in the process of moving to BLT (I'm actually here now). While I will NEVER be a fan of the O-holes, I'll be forced to follow them just the same as I live here. I'll go to every Sox game I can and I am going to make every effort to get NESN here (I think I have that part figured out). But I'll go to other games as well. If the o's losing doesn't benefit the Sox, I can see myself clapping if Davis crushes one. Obviously I WON'T be cheering anything in favor of an O's win this season because the race is tight.
Now I know you'll pick my honesty apart and call me a bad Sox fan (like you have the RIGHT to judge) and the your alter ego will defend everything you say, but maturity has given me the comfort in my own skin and therefore the freedom to be truthful.
In the end a fan doesn't concern themselves with whether they are "legit" or "real fans" or not. You've been defending your fandom since your Keith Hernandez days (even if nobody asked you made sure you told everyone that your "dad is from mass so I am a real fan"). That says a lot! I thought it was weird then. I still do.
