If that's what Boston and their fans wanted then kudos. I'm happy for them

Of course Pedroia is getting more money than Biggio did 10+ years ago; that's professional sports.

This isn't meant as an insult as much as a point of fact: Biggio played in Houston. Pedrioa plays in Boston. Which market is going to pay more? Which market is going to REQUIRE more?

keep in mind Houston was in the top 5 in salary for the better part of a decade 1995-2008ish

Boston has more money, and is thus usually more inclined to go ahead and give their guys big, long contracts

Not really. Maybe spent a few years in the top 5 of the NL.

Big yes. Long? Recent history says no.
Pedro, Manny, Damon, Nomar are just a few of the REALLY big names that left due to length of contract. The Sox would routinely let their big names leave rather than sign them to retirement.

Adrian Gonzalez was given 7 years. As was Carl Crawford. And then you had Dice-K, Pedroia's old deal, Drew, Lackey, etc... signing 5 or 6 year contracts.

None (except Drew) were the last contract earned. Lackey, we'll see. Dice K was a business deal used to sell the brand to Japan. They got him for free when you add the revenue of selling NESN to Japanese Cable.
This MAY be Pedroia's last contract. That was my point. The Sox have long signed big names to the second to last contract then let their stars leave. Pedroia may (or may not) finish his career in Boston. Obviously, I can't say for certain.
quote:
The reason I said that playing in Boston means more money is evident. Boston is a premiere team in a big market. They need to pay more to keep them there. If a player want to "play out their last years" and collect a paycheck, Boston or NY aren't the teams to sign with.

At the least, I imagine there are a great many players out there that would love to go end their years with one of those clubs. They know they're going to have a chance to win some ballgames and maybe get a ring, or two.
