If that's what Boston and their fans wanted then kudos. I'm happy for them

I can't speak for all Boston fans, but all I've heard is positive.

I can't argue what would have made more baseball sense, but fans like their players. Pedey has earned some loyalty. I am happy that Boston showed him some rather than playing hardball with him and gambling that he would suck in the future.

Of course Pedroia is getting more money than Biggio did 10+ years ago; that's professional sports.

Point is Biggio produced to age 40 and Pedroia easily could too.

This isn't meant as an insult as much as a point of fact: Biggio played in Houston. Pedrioa plays in Boston. Which market is going to pay more? Which market is going to REQUIRE more?

Boston has more money, and is thus usually more inclined to go ahead and give their guys big, long contracts but I'm not so sure Boston "requires" more money.

Under Drayton they had plenty of money and spent it quite a bit.

It's obviously a different dynamic now, but yes...Boston is a big money team in comparison.

Boston, New York and LA will always be the "big spenders" but keep in mind Houston was in the top 5 in salary for the better part of a decade 1995-2008ish. I know we aren't spending money now due to a rebuild but rest assured it will be spent when the time comes of necessity

Not really. Maybe spent a few years in the top 5 of the NL.

Big yes. Long? Recent history says no.

Pedro, Manny, Damon, Nomar are just a few of the REALLY big names that left due to length of contract. The Sox would routinely let their big names leave rather than sign them to retirement.

I'm afraid we're off track of debating if Pedroia will be worth the contract...I was mainly curious of what you meant by "requires more money."

Anyways...

Very recent history...Pedroia for 7 years.

Adrian Gonzalez was given 7 years. As was Carl Crawford. And then you had Dice-K, Pedroia's old deal, Drew, Lackey, etc... signing 5 or 6 year contracts.

And way back when...it was Pedro with the 7 year contract.

None (except Drew) were the last contract earned. Lackey, we'll see. Dice K was a business deal used to sell the brand to Japan. They got him for free when you add the revenue of selling NESN to Japanese Cable.

This MAY be Pedroia's last contract. That was my point. The Sox have long signed big names to the second to last contract then let their stars leave. Pedroia may (or may not) finish his career in Boston. Obviously, I can't say for certain.

The reason I said that playing in Boston means more money is evident. Boston is a premiere team in a big market. They need to pay more to keep them there. If a player want to "play out their last years" and collect a paycheck, Boston or NY aren't the teams to sign with.

You're manufacturing an argument that isn't there. Sorry I responded in the first place. My thought process was Boston is in a better position to give this contract than a club like Houston ever has been.

If Boston and New York has to pay more to get and/or keep players, I think it has more to do with their deep pockets and the ability of agents to leverage that against them.

I don't think most MLB players are inclined to shy away from New York and Boston. Players who are afraid of pressure aren't the kind of player that would have offers from Boston or New York, anyways. Players who are afraid of pressure don't put up the production required, and for a long enough period of time to be considered by those clubs.

At the least, I imagine there are a great many players out there that would love to go end their years with one of those clubs. They know they're going to have a chance to win some ballgames and maybe get a ring, or two.

Same reason why even in the NBA, with their transparent and structured free agency and salaries, the older, more accomplished free agents tend to end up in LA, Boston, Miami (for now), etc...

While I agree with this, these clubs aren't in the business of being a retirement community for aging players (except John Smoltz and Bartolo Colon). The Sox business plan requires them to be in competition. That is the challenge with signing aging players. They need to be in the hunt for the rings. Aging players can hinder that.

If Pedroia weren't a fan favorite and a club leader, with a ton of heart, he wouldn't be worth it.

Oh, the *game* was postponed. Same difference.

That last inning was as ugly as Token's last girlfriend, but the Rays will take it, and take over first place in the division.

Hey, you could've said that 6 run inning was as ugly as my last girlfriend, and I would have had to agree.

I got over the moustache fairly quickly. It was the Adam's apple that was tough to deal with.

Rays go 1-8 with RISP, leave ten men on base, and only score one run.

On the opposite side of the ledger, Archer drops a complete game, two hit shutout on the Bombers. Rays win 1-0.
