Rangers should bring back Hamels, Holland, and Darvish and pretend it's 2016 but without many wins.

I posted this in 17 and I'll update it slightly, but this is pretty spot-on, still.Quote:
You just finished 6 games under .500 and 23 games out of first. You traded away your ace midseason who is now a FA. You have no major plans to spend decent new money this year with a payroll approaching 110 M. Your young core is not all that good. Your best player will be 39 and either busted for roids and start to decline like all aging players do. You have one of the worst rotations in baseball. You have no bullpen. Your farm system is bottom 10 in the league even though you were sellers at the deadline. This is all done by the architect that is Jon Daniels. Things will not be significantly better next year or the one after that or the several after that. You're stuck in 83 wins or fewer zone unless you spend like NY & LA or rebuild.

You have no major plans to spend decent new money this year with a payroll approaching 130 M. Your young core is not all that good. Your best player could only stay on the field for 70 games and either hits a home run or strikes out. Your rotation is one of the worst in baseball after Minor and Lynn (they only have 1 year left each). You have no bullpen. Your farm system is middle of the pack even though you you've been sellers in 17 and 18 (but not 19 for some reason). This is all done by the architect that is Jon Daniels. I actually like the young kids behind Minor and Lynn. And I think we are going to grab a premium TOTR pitcher in the offseason. We have decent bullpen arms, too.
The Rangers will make the playoffs in the next two years.
Nobody spends more than NY & LA

I was enjoying a better than expected first half of the season for us. That comment seemed to really get a rise out of you guys. I'm glad you had fun with it.BMX Bandit said:Quote:

Have you finished figuring out the math on making the playoffs yet Smokey? Or has the "is Ian Kinsler a hall of famer" debate taking up too much of your time?
First ballot, no doubt.Farmer1906 said:

Man, I hope you are right. I don't see it next year. I also hope we don't go to $175M just to say we can do it. Then we look like cellar-dwellers LAA and PHI.AccidentProne said:

Will we go after Cole, Strasburg, Keuchel, Bumgarner, Odorizzi or some other front line starter?
You're right. He's atrocious. Odor has been the worst regular player in MLB for 3+ years in a row.BMX Bandit said:

Yes but you'll always have Odor punching out Bautista...so there's that.Grapesoda2525 said:You're right. He's atrocious. Odor has been the worst regular player in MLB for 3+ years in a row.BMX Bandit said:

It's frustrating because I've long accepted that we wasted our money on him by extending him, but this year the rangers doubled down on their mistake by wasting a ton of at bats on him when we had more talented alternatives on the roster like Santana and solak. Go figure.
There will never be an altuve vs odor debate again and as far as I'm concerned, there never really was one. Altuve can flat out hit.

Unlikely, yes. But baseball doesn't follow chalk, so that's what we'll have to hope for. Astros, Yankees, AL Central winner, and more-often-than-not Red Sox. Three/four seasons out of 5 that really only leaves 1 spot for Texas to beat out Rays/Indians/A's. That's a tough ask.Marvin said:South Platte said:Man, I hope you are right. Assume for argument's sake that the Astros and Yankees will see the playoffs the next two years. Seems more reasonable than them not being there, so just go with the hypothetical. That leaves three spots. Twins or Indians will obviously take one of those, leaving two. Will the Rangers improve enough to overtake the Red Sox, Rays, A's and Twins/Indians? It seems like a big stretch to me that the Rangers can improve quickly enough to pass three of those teams.
The Rangers punched them in May.... and the Blue Jays knocked them out in OctoberProsperdick said:Yes but you'll always have Odor punching out Bautista...so there's that.Grapesoda2525 said:You're right. What a shame. Tough to watch Verlander look so bad. Hopefully Cole doesn't do a repeat performance of a complete choke job for such a "cy young" pitcher. You saw what a cy young pitcher can do by making Alvarez look like roogie on a bad day.
Yeah there would be.HossAg said:

Can you tell me that you haven't rooted against us when we were in the playoffs and you guys weren't? I even said that I think y'all will win Thursday and the guy above is dumb for talking crap so early.
Get over yourself.

Dude, it's not too early. They will run train on them Thursday then I can't really poke the bear. Tonight was a little raw for Astro fans so a little ribbing never hurt.
Messing around with the rays could hurt them in the next round tho. They wanted Verlander and Cole to start 1 and 2 against the Yankees, that won't happen now.South Platte said:
Houston will win Thursday night. Houston will still probably win the world series. It's a little early to poke the bear at this point.
