Yes I think the problem is numbers choosing online. One of the plans in BISD as I understand it was to have a virtual school, with admin and teachers. But the number of online students didn't support a whole separate structure, so now we have synchronous instruction (I think at all levels, for sure MS and HS) with both e-learners and in person having one teacher. The advantage is transitioning in and out of in person keeps students in the same class.

For us the problem was the mandatory virtual for everyone for the first three weeks. Our virtual numbers are very high, pushing 65% staying virtual the first 9 weeks.

It's also going to be real fun since our district hasn't decided whether to extend mandatory virtual another 4 weeks. The parents that can't do this are already drowning. They want the schools open tomorrow. The in-person teachers want the schools open now. The 65% virtual parents are hollering at the top of their lungs because their kids have to have schedules redrawn and teachers reassigned once school starts. We have a school board meeting tonight and the social media arguing has been intense.

It all just needs to be open.

High schools that give the option for students to switch online/traditional every 9 weeks are probably mostly doing the hybrid model. I'm a teacher not looking forward to it.

Yesterday was Lewisville ISD's first day of school - they have 5 fairly large high schools (some ~4,000 students). They required their teachers to come in. Reasonable - nobody put up a stink. But their network couldn't handle it so they asked all of them to work at home today. I think it's funny.

My high school was 50/50ish for a while, now it suddenly jumped to 60/40 online. I have no idea why.

Reports all over that the hybrid is crushing schools bandwidth.

It might be crushing SOME schools bandwidth but unless they're hosting apps in-house more than in the cloud it's more likely crushing schoology, blackboard, or canvas' bandwidth.

One particular ISD in Texas decided to send thousands of extra/new devices home and didn't upgrade the filtering infrastructure at the ISD.

I heard that Highland Park ISD crashed about 8:45am too. Day 1. So apparently money doesn't buy success. At least on Day 1.

I start school on Monday. Had a zoom meeting with some teachers today, maybe 15-20, and my computer froze.

Don't think that was the case. At least at the middle school where they're using Google Classroom. Other than the usual frustrations with passwords and such, it was remarkably smooth from a technology standpoint.

If teachers are underpaid, I can't imagine what kind of IT support they are getting for what they are paying.

I used to work in k12 IT (I'm a contractor to them now) a desktop technician is going to make at or less than a first year teacher. A server or network coordinator at a decent sized district is going to be making $50-100k. It's not a bad job in the technology world with all the school holidays and TRS.

They had 56 public statements submitted for our board meeting tonight.

54 want the district to stay closed, 2 want the district to reopen.

I would guess an organized effort by a local political org to effectively stuff the vote, or that town is >90% liberal.

It's definitely not 90%.

Not 90% but all the new builds East of 130 have definitely skewed the demographics of the district. 65% of parents chose virtual school the first 9 weeks. Our elementary school is higher then that. From what I've seen online, I'm not surprised about how the school board meeting went especially since there was chatter that the district was leaning towards going back.

One of the Katy schools forgot to sign up for the pro zoom account, so their meetings kept terminating after an hour.

It may be a quick fix but it illustrates a colossal lack of preparation. My teenagers know that their zoom acct is going to kick you out because they got the free version.

Been hit or miss for my kids in RRISD, haven't gotten a single email about schedules or anything from our first grade teacher.

4th grade has been spot on, moving assignment due dates a couple of days our due to normal issues, adjusting schedules to ensure things aren't missed etc.

6th trader has had a good experience as well.

That said, all the kids want to go back to school and virtual school is not a viable long term option for a household where both parents are working.

Classic example of voluntary response bias...there is pretty much no way that is representative of the entire district.

We've had kids online and in person this week. A few minor tech problems but nothing major. Oh and we all lived through it.

That sounds like a district issue, not a campus problem.

Update from my district:

Started remote learning for all on 8/19 for a scheduled 3 week stint.
20 minutes synchronous and the remainder of class period asynchronous.
On 8/17 all teachers who requested to work from home had their requests denied.

Yesterday, our principal sent an email outlining the initial plan for returning.
We will return to campus on 9/8 for face-to-face instruction.
We will live-stream our classes for 20 minutes for remote students and then engage with our in person students.
I am not sure if during the live-stream we are exclusively working with our remote students or simultaneously with both groups.
We have been called back to campus for previously unscheduled PD days on 8/28 and 9/4 for planning roll out.
As of now, we will adhere to strict mitigation guidelines including hand washing, hand sanitizer, masks, and social distancing.
Fine arts is required to leave their space every class period after 20 minutes to allow the air to recirculate.

During the school board meeting last week, many parents were advocating for the reopening of schools, without masks, without adhering to social distancing protocols, and without increasing campus cleaning. They were concerned about the health risks associated with these mitigation measures.

I am ready to return to the classroom especially since I have a daughter who started PK (she is doing amazingly with the format) and a 1 year old son. So challenging! I am legitimately concerned about my colleagues who requested to work from home. I pray that our administration does everything they can to keep them safe. We will have 2/3 of our students back on campus. I average 30 students per class. If the numbers hold, I should have 20 students in my classes. Won't be able to socially distance, but I will work it out. Time to mask up and welcome my new students back to campus!
