Thank you teachers! My daughter is loving how her teachers are interacting with her and the rest of class. I asked her if she felt like she was learning. She said that the first week was rough, but now that everyone is used to this it's working out OK. I hear her laughing, working with other students and the like. She stated that her teachers have been awesome to work with and extremely helpful with guidance and tutoring. She also got to go on campus for color guard instruction yesterday...talk about exciting to see her friends again in real life.

I'll likely be teaching virtually whether I want to or not...over 90% of my AP students opted for online. I would have enough for one distanced section F2F, and that's it. We've been told to brace for gigantic virtual classes...40-50 per class wouldn't surprise me.

My IB students are also mostly remote and so o have big online classes as well. Honestly, the remote teaching is a big pain and takes a lot of time to do but I am starting to get the hang of it. The issue is doing that plus having in person students in front of you at the same time. Today I had kids in front of me asking questions at the same time as a remote kid on Webex was asking the same questions and at the same time my email is dinging(we have been told we need to be checking email frequently) and the nurse calls my classroom at that exact moment to talk to a student. Classroom management is always tough but it is insane right now!

Good mask news in my school district. The school still requires masks to be worn in the hallways between classes. No masks in the classroom.

I know it makes no sense but you have to at least have the appearance that you are complying with the state mask nazis. I like how our school admin is pushes the envelope toward common sense.

My kids go to Prosper schools. In person school started in Mid August. Its now been a month, and no issues. I think we had like 1 case early on, and haven't heard a word since.

The kids are loving being back in school and are seriously excited every morning to go.

I think we will all be ok.

My kids are back. They hate the masks, but very glad to be back in person. They hated online.. slow responses from teachers with questions.. etc

Boerne is still reporting covid cases. I think there have been 2 this week at each of the 2 HS campuses. Still quarantining those who have 15min contact within 6 feet (not whole campuses).

I have not heard of any serious illness with any of the positives; nor have I heard of community or even family spread (I think that would be out if the cases were serious, it is possible families have had positives and haven't said anything)

My kiddo has been back full time since the beginning of the semester of College Station High School. They've had one staff member and one kiddo that have tested positive out of 2000+ kids. Both were back in school in a few days.

Wylie had a positive case at the same high school that has been seeing the majority of the cases. Students and staff that have had it only had minor symptoms. After 5 weeks if we were not told about COVID I don't think anyone would know a pandemic is happening.

Concur. My daughter is good friends with one of the kids that tested positive, and sits right behind him in a class. She got quarantined, tested negative day 4 past contact, never got sick etc. The same kids long term girlfriend never tested positive or got sick

The school is mentally harming these kids more by quarantining than COVID ever would. Average of 25 kids per case are getting quarantined. Its ridiculous.

None of these kids being quarantined are getting sick. Its not spreading in schools.

I'm elated to post that (surprisingly) the FWISD Board rejected a proposal to extend the start date of in-person school another four weeks. Kids will still an option to attend virtually, but now we actually have a choice to attend face to fave instruction.

I have one kid at TAMU, he lives with 3 others in a 4 bed 4 bath apt.

TAMU is random testing.

One of the roommates tested on a Tuesday - no symptoms, lived as normal till Thursday positive result. Other 3 roommates decide to get tested as a precaution - first test Thursday of that week, results Saturday all negative. Roommate's girlfriend who was staying in the apt because of her roommate's positive - also negative.

My son and other roommates get retested as a precaution this week - all 3 negative

Did the kid who tested positive face any action by the University? Mandatory quarantine or anything?

Also, this is a textbook example of how to keep a "casedemic" going: diagnosing perfectly well, non-infectious individuals as "sick", based solely on the result of a lab test.

Off campus so there isn't much TAMU could do, really. He works at the Rec so I'm sure isn't allowed back there. Idk how the reporting works but I think my son and all his roommates are most if not all online right now anyway. The positive roommate and his girlfriend are quarantining at her apartment.

I think if they are on campus they have to quarantine.

FIFY

Great to know students are coming back in Forth Worth!

What is the percentage breakdown for remote vs. F2F? Will FWISD implement a phased-in approach similar to districts in Travis County?

The assistant superintendent told my wife today that they plan on 3 more weeks of masks and then no masks at all. Is the mask thing a local decision? I assumed that is came from the state.

TEA doesn't require masks absent a government order, but allow local districts to make that call.

Since there is currently a mask mandate per the governor, all students and staff are required to wear masks indoors (when developmentally appropriate).

So unless something changes in the next three weeks, your district would not be able to ditch masks per the governor's order and TEA's guidance. I mean I suppose they could call their bluff but TEA typically doesn't mess around when it comes to local districts ignoring them.

Friend has a daughter who is at Baylor, evidently they announced today that they are canceling spring break for the upcoming spring semester. School will start 1 week later in January and no off week in March for spring break. Supposedly Iowa, K State and a few other schools have done the same. Absurd!

As of 9/15/20, you have 4 active cases. Any cleared cases have been removed from the dashboard. In no way am I implying that this is a problem, but wanted to clarify the misinformation that there has been only one case in the district.
Prosper Covid Dashboard

Editing to add Wylie's dashboard since Wylie was mentioned by a poster. They include active cases and cumulative cases. I think it's reassuring to see the data for the entire year.

Someone else asked if masks are up to district discretion. It's up to each district to decide whether to require masks at the elementary level since masks aren't required for children under 10 by the governor's order. Districts must comply with the governor's order for older students.

Got clarification on the elimination of masks in 3 weeks. Your county can apply for a waiver with <20 active cases. Our county will be eligible to get the waiver this Friday I believe. The school will wait 2 more weeks just to be cautious. Assuming we are still under 20 cases after 2 weeks, the mask requirements will be lifted at the school.

Ahh I forgot about that exemption. Thats great news that your county has less than 20 cases.

I was just having this discussion a couple of days ago. For all the hope that most college students I know had that their spring semester would be more 'normal', I figured the colleges would do this. I just haven't wanted to say anything to my kiddos about it because I know one of them is super over the BS and I expect her school to one of the strictest.

It's a helicopter parent's dream to exert this much control over their kid's college experience. (Or lack thereof, actually)

In illinois...

If a student travels to a state on the illinois travel ban list, the student will have to quarantine and cannot even participate in *online learning*.

So much science!!!

That is one of the most ridiculous things I've heard. Even it that's legal, how is it ethical? It makes no sense at all. Are COVID cooties transmissible by cyber conversations? What if the student is masked?

Whoever made that policy deserves to be publicly humiliated.

I followed the link and responses and it turns out the policy is not as bad as the writer of the notice. The quarantine policy and no online learning applies to students that have opted for in-person learning. The reason they cannot switch temporarily to online is because it is two different curriculum models and the logistics of switching for a short period is more than is reasonable for the school to have to administer.

There was nothing that said the student can't continue the in-person assignments at home if they make arrangements, so I would suppose that is still an option. I know in normal circumstances schools in Texas would send assignments home for students that are unable to attend class for prolonged medical reasons.

But the writer of the notice deserves an F for the confusing, alarming nature of their communication.

See, now this is what I am taking about:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/education/feared-covid-outbreaks-in-schools-yet-to-arrive-early-data-shows/2020/09/23/0509bb84-fd22-11ea-b555-4d71a9254f4b_story.html

Writers for the Post and the NYTs are tired of working from home with their kids too. We just more high quality data reporting from places that have opened. Some red states appear to have obscured data reporting because they didn't want to get blasted if cases went up. Turns out they are probably just hiding good news (and making it really hard for people to believe the stats that are out there)

The other people's point is you couldn't trust GLOBAL data from other places as well as other places through the continental US. You needed an article from one of two places telling you what you could have already known if you looked at all the data. With all of the different reporting methods from different places, the conclusions are showing as very, very, similar. We can use that for decision making.

I'm glad a large newspaper is reporting on it, don't get me wrong as it will certainly ease fears, but sometimes we have to do our own digging and researching to make our decisions. There have been articles from places outside of the Washington Post and NYT saying the same things they are saying now for months. Our schools districts could have been using that data back in July/early Aug to make decisions regarding schools instead of pushing start dates back into September.

Only when it becomes too obvious for major outlets to ignore, will it move the needle with the largest school districts.

The lack of major headlines describing all the death and destruction from Florida and Georgia schools is enough to deduce that things are ok, but those states putting out detailed data would be 1000 times better.

Well, I started having COVID-19-like symptoms Monday night that got worse yesterday. I've been in the classroom since the day after Labor Day. Tuesday morning I contacted my principal and the head of HR. My wife who also teaches on the same campus was told to stay home as well as my two kids. Wanting to go back to campus as soon as possible, I elected to have the rapid test administered. In an hour, I was informed I tested negative. I sent the negative test results to my principal and the head of HR expecting to return to work after 24 hours fever free.

Here's the pisser: the head of HR requested that I call her around 8:00 last night. When I called her, she informed me that the results of the rapid test would not clear me to return to campus. She said that I should have read the TEA guidance regarding testing even though this information was not included in our COVID-19 employee document. She also said that I should have called her or that my principal should have directed me. I called her that morning and left a message. I contacted my principal in the morning as well.

Long story long, I just returned to the house after taking the lab test. Hopefully, after 2-3 days I will be cleared to return to work.

More of a pisser: I have been informed that the testing policy changed yesterday. Ugh.

Moral of the story: 2020 sucks.
