She said that I should have read the TEA guidance regarding testing even though this information was not included in our COVID-19 employee document.

More of a pisser: I have been informed that the testing policy changed yesterday. Ugh.

So was she trying to say you should have, on the day you thought you had COVID, understood there was a change in policy and followed that revised policy?

Sorry to hear about your situation. Seems like there needs to be an improvement in process and more clarification as I fail to see anything you did wrong...

Well, I started having COVID-19-like symptoms Monday night that got worse yesterday. I've been in the classroom since the day after Labor Day. Tuesday morning I contacted my principal and the head of HR. My wife who also teaches on the same campus was told to stay home as well as my two kids. Wanting to go back to campus as soon as possible, I elected to have the rapid test administered. In an hour, I was informed I tested negative. I sent the negative test results to my principal and the head of HR expecting to return to work after 24 hours fever free.

Here's the pisser: the head of HR requested that I call her around 8:00 last night. When I called her, she informed me that the results of the rapid test would not clear me to return to campus. She said that I should have read the TEA guidance regarding testing even though this information was not included in our COVID-19 employee document. She also said that I should have called her or that my principal should have directed me. I called her that morning and left a message. I contacted my principal in the morning as well.

Long story long, I just returned to the house after taking the lab test. Hopefully, after 2-3 days I will be cleared to return to work.

More of a pisser: I have been informed that the testing policy changed yesterday. Ugh.

Moral of the story: 2020 sucks.

I am sorry to hear. I hope you are negative!

First I've heard that the rapid test couldn't clear you. My wife performs the rapid test in her middle school nurse's office and it can be used to clear students/staff in her district (Aledo).

The school district my niece attends won't accept the results from rapid tests either. They said there are too many false negatives.

Survival rate for school-aged kids is 99.997%.
I assume most teachers are in the 20-49 age group - 99.98% for them.

Hear on the news this morning that Lubbock Roosevelt is eliminating remote learning all together. 2 reasons. Very low positive cases throughout the state and 70% of remote learners are failing. Only exception is if a kid is on their 2 week quarantine.

did the school district make you pay for the tests?...Also why not just not take the test? Allergies are common, or are they non existent these days? You're either healthy, or you have corona?

For the rapid test, my insurance covered it. For the test at the CVS, the test was "free" (I'm sure someone's money was used).

My district is not paying for tests as far as I know.

I had the test administered because as an essential worker I believe it is my duty (and passion) to be with my students. I also care about my coworkers, and as of right now, I don't have a sub, so my counterpart is having to cover for me as well as teach her classes.

I can't sit out for the required 10 days after symptoms onset. In addition, without the test my wife will also have to stay home.

In the end, in my district, if you are presenting any symptoms, you are to stay home. If you don't get tested, you are considered to have COVID.

Seems like a no-brainer to me. Get the test to ensure HR I am negative, or don't get tested and be a burden to my wonderful campus.

No logic is allowed with COVID unfortunately.

As a parent....your dedication is very much appreciated.

our 4A district is having similar numbers. Remote is not working, similar failing percentage, and the teachers are frustrated and doing double duty. My wife is on school board and they are working on the date that remote will end. Total cluster.

Remote won't end unless they get rid of the ridiculous 14 / 10 day quarantine. It should be treated no different than the flu for these age groups.

Speaking of remote, inclement weather days may be something of the past. At least a few districts went remote with the flooding in Houston.

You could be right, but I've got a sneaking suspicion that when this is over, teachers are going to resist zoom classes on snow days.

From what I understood, she said I should have been informed either by my own reading of the TEA guidelines or my principal. She also said that she wishes I would have called her. I left a message at 7:45 that morning with a callback.

Have you seen where in the TEA guidance this is stated? I just read through the September 24th guidance and see nothing regarding rapid vs. lab testing (https://tea.texas.gov/sites/default/files/covid/SY-20-21-Public-Health-Guidance.pdf). Aledo is definitely not (at least not at this time) differentiating between rapid and lab COVID testing.

I hope that every leader will learn from this. The breakdown in communication is absurd (among other issues).

I just got my results: negative. .

Young people and their adaptive immune systems are perhaps our greatest asset in this pandemic. The German researchers months ago were correct when they described children as a "brake" on infections.

so if a teacher drinks to much and has a hang over, gets a headache, throws up the next morning and calls in sick because they drank too much they will be required to either quarntine for ten days or take a chinese flu test?

Hmmm. It depends. Was the teacher French kissing an infected person while getting hammered?

If yes, then the teacher should self-quarantine or be tested.

Off campus so there isn't much TAMU could do, really. He works at the Rec so I'm sure isn't allowed back there. Idk how the reporting works but I think my son and all his roommates are most if not all online right now anyway. The positive roommate and his girlfriend are quarantining at her apartment.

I think if they are on campus they have to quarantine.

How convenient! They have to "quarantine" together. Oh what ever shall they do to pass the time?

Where are you getting those numbers? The district's dashboard doesn't show 0 student cases. I don't think the numbers are terrible by any means, but there aren't 0.

Wylie ISD Dashboard

Also, just for clarification, the number of students regularly on campus isn't 17,400 since about half chose remote learning. Again, I still don't think the numbers are cause for alarm, just clarifying the true denominator.

So becoming a teacher. And working at Prosper among other districts. So far, things have been great. The only real issue is trace contacting is forcing teachers and students to quarantine when they don't have Covid. A negative test, or even multiple negative tests don't matter. My only issue is that realistically they can't keep doing that level of safety and caution. They are strapped for subs as it is. Since the kids are safe from this and the only real threat is to the teachers, a change in policy needs to be looked at. There's no need to quarantine if one tests negative. That's not following the basic science.

Boerne had the same issue. Too many people getting quarantined, none of them getting sick. Boerne just announced a change as of Oct 1. Masks now matter so few will get quarantined. However, we traded one stupid protocol for another. Now a kid will have to stay home 24 days if someone in their house is positive. This has already occurred, and yet its still hasn't spread in school, but now they have to stay home 24 days? I question Region 8's authority to require this length of time.

And, someone from TDHS called my buddy yesterday asking about his daughter as she was quarantined. He wouldn't answer any questions as they wouldn't tell him how he got his daughters name and info. His assumption is the school provided her information to TDHS.

"Member of Household Confirmed Diagnosis
  • Report of a student's/employee's member of a household having a confirmed diagnosis should be made to campus or department administrator
  • 14-day at-home quarantine that begins at the end of the infected household member's isolation period. (As of 10/1/2020)

The new Household Exposure Protocol is a required protocol from Region 8 Health Authority and approved by the CDC.
  • Closure of classroom, hallway, or building to allow for sanitization
Primary exposure: A primary exposure would include proximity (within 6 ft.) to a person with a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 for a period of more than 15 min. without a face mask. (As of 10/1/2020)
  • Report of a student/employee having a primary exposure should be made to campus or department administrator
  • 14-day quarantine(at home)
  • No alternate diagnosis of excuse will remove the 14-day quarantine when an individual has been exposed per CDC guidelines.

Cy Fair is the same - and football parents and coaches are going nuts because student (player/band/drill) could have sat next to positive student, get sent home and told to quarantine for 14 days. Even with multiple negative tests they now would have to miss 14 days - or 2 football games. Again- how is your student with proof they are negative a risk to anyone?!

You also run the risk of students not getting tested - symptoms or not - because they don't want to possibly be out for 2 weeks.

To above two points. Athletes in Boerne ISD went online due to the 14 day quarantine nonsense. Additionally, people absolutely were not getting tested (unless you were clueless) for this same reason.
