Can't decide if I want to go back & watch again from season 1 or start reading the books.

I would recommend reading the books. There are whole levels of depth in the books that are not in the show.

-I am looking forward to seeing J'aqen in future seasons and how he comes back to the story. (and I wonder what his reaction would have been if Arya had mentioned her Dancing Instructor's name - like would he have known him and been impressed or at least respected her start to training)

Didn't he offer to take her with him to Bravos?

How far in the books could one read without spoiling anything that hasn't yet happened? From what I've heard it sounds like Seasons One and Two covered Books One and Two, respectively?

PooDoo, J'aqen did offer to take Arya with him.

My favorite part was when Tyrion finally allowed himself to fall in love with the hoar and believe that she loves him, as well. I don't know if his little midget heart could take it if it turns out he is being decieved again.

judging by what the show gave us last night, i think you can finish book 2 and not be spoiled except for one event in Dany's storyline at the very end of the book

Season 1 and Book 1 were pretty similar. This season the show has diverged from the books in the details but the overall direction is still going the same. many things were condensed in the show that would he hard to explain without being spoilerish. While this season did cover all of book 2 there were some parts of the third book in it. I would say you could safely read the first two and not spoil anything, should you wish.

What did Stannis see in the fire?

Thanks for the book input guys. I'm fine with it if there's one or two minor things, just didn't want to learn about any big upcoming plot twists.

Now if I only had time to read...

They are basically keeping the big events from the book in line with the show.

Take for instance Stannis/Renly, it happened about the same and during the same time frame. If the show shows them duke it out or kills the wrong one. The Battle of Blackwater either doesnt happen or it involves Renly. Then the Tyrells arent fighting for the Lannisters, thus they probably sack KL and kill most of those inside. This means we have a new king and Marg Tyrell isnt betrothed to Joff.

So in many respects what they show is rather parallel to the books, however in many respects the show takes on its own canon. And I wont discuss those on this thread because of sensitivities.

My prediction about what Stannis saw...(I'm about 10% of the way through Book 2 and honestly have NO idea...but thought I'd wager a guess).

I think he saw Dany and her dragons. But that's just me.

-I missed Littlefinger this season. I gained a major new appreciation for Varys...but Baelish was awesome last year and wish we could have seen more of him.

-Can someone explain to me how a guy like Jaqen could ever get caught? Much less get put in a cage and sent to join the Night's Watch?

In regards to Jaquen, I think it is a good question to ask. Why is he in Westeros? Why is he in the position he is? Is it intentional? Ie- he intended to cross paths w Arya. Why is he heading back to Bravos? Mission accomplished? He is an elite assassin. What was his job?

I was wondering about that all too, possibly the most interesting revelation of their whole exchange yesterday is that he knew exactly who she was. How, and why didn't he let on earlier?

That's right! I totally forgot to ask y'all because I was pretty sure that was the first time he'd mentioned Arya's name.

Arya's storyline and outlook going forward has been a total 180 degree turn since the beginning of the season. Thought it was really uninteresting with her pretending to be a boy and just scrape by, but it became one of my favorite segments as she started interacting more with Tywin Lannister and giving kill orders to Jaquen.

Yes, each season has covered a book so far. Season 3 should be about Book 3, "A Storm of Swords".

Books 4 and 5 are basically one book, but because it was so big he had to split them up into 2 books by splitting up the characters. Some of the main characters are only in big 4 while the others are only in book 5. Not sure how HBO will handle that.

I think you are overreaching on Jaqen. He didn't dismiss "dancing instructors" rudely either.

I know I'm a little late to the party but I'm rewatching the last few episodes and thought if chime in.

3 weeks ago when Robb sent word to the guys son, he was instructed to let any Grayjoy who surrenders keep their head. Everyone except Theon. So in guessing that's how they walked out without a fight.

This is a no spoiler thread, so if it hasn't been revealed in the show don't post it. Who burned down Winterfell is a spoiler.

I'm guessing there is a good chance that Jaqen could actually be Arya's dancing instructor from season 1 since he can change his face.

Either way, he is a badass character.

This isnt a spoiler, its just the mechanics the show's creators are having to deal with.

Book 3 is super long and it has been speculated that the third season will be the first half, while the 4th season will be the second half of book 3.

Book 4&5 get more difficult because they occur at the same time. The split GRRM created was geographic instead of having "16" POV characters for 2 books. He made Book 4 look at only "8" POVs for Westeros and Book 5 "8" POVs in the Eastern continent and the Wall.

As a show producer, it truly makes more sense to adapt the geographic split because would you rather pay for "50" permanent actors for two whole seasons, versus "25" permanent actors for a season apiece. The problem is: will viewers be able to understand that the following season starts chronologically at the beginning of the previous season? Will viewers go a full season without seeing Arya or fan-favorite Tyrion? Will a kid go from being 8yo in the show to being a hairy pimpled 15yo IRL?

These are all big decisions.

I suggested that they go ahead and film the kids parts in advanced, HBO has the money, and they have already filmed scenes that havent made it in. If they are gonna be overfilming, they might as well go ahead and get the kids while they are young, ya know. I mean we still have a minimum of six seasons left. That means these kids will have progressed 8years since filming the first season. How much screen time does Bran or Arya truly get? 550 mins a season = what, 40ms for their characters each? Go ahead and film 120mins now and then another 120mins later maybe when they look one or two years older than S02. And that is the equivalent of filming them for 2 full length movies, in the next 2 years. WHY NOT?

Bill,

To your point I think they would be wise to go ahead and film several seasons through Book 5, there would be massive cost savings. The ages are a concern though because if you get into Season 7 or whatever after it is that could get awkward.

I was indeed speaking in hypotheticals simply because they are the youngest and best well-known. There are other youngins that will also have similar aging problems if the characters still live in the show (tit-sucking Robert Arryn, the two younger Baratheon-Lannisters, and of course Rickon Stark).

But I thought I made it absolutely clear that the TV show isnt following the book. :P
