Nice thread. I just bought the first four books and started the first one not to long ago as Im keeping up with the show. I like the conversation on things that have happened, I dint mid that at all. It actually helps understand everything better.

That is the hardest thing for me. With the changes that they have made to put the story on TV sometimes it seems like they skipped over an important detail, only to explain it in a different way. So I've learned to just keep my mouth shut, and only explain something if someone asks.

One thing I will say, if you liked Tyrion & Cersie's exchange in the first episode, then you're gonna love the rest of this season. Dinklage as Tyrion has got to be one of, if not the best casting of a character from a book for a Movie/TV Show, Ever.

Monk, you mention about learning to keep your mouth shut and then literally the next sentence you reveal how long two characters will be around.

It's not that hard people. The most common spoiler that repeatedly happens here is acknowledging a characters existence in the future. I realize most the time it is unintended, but please re-read what you write before posting.

Am I reading this right?

Hotard is mad because he expects Tyrion and Cersei to die before the end of this season?

Where the hell is the line? If someone says "omg I cant wait to see what happens with Jon beyond the Wall this season" when clearly from Ep01 that is their focus for Jon (hell that was clear from last season), is that a spoiler?

Seriously Hotard, I usually agree with the no spoilers thing, but looking forward to exchanges is pretty weak to get upset at.

For example, if someone said during the beginning of Season 1 that they couldn't wait to see the exchanges of Ned Stark and LittleFinger, would that have meant Ned would live the whole season? Obviously not.

So just because someone mentions things like that doesn't protect a character from getting killed or maimed or whatever.

Here's a hint, if you go LOOKING for a spoiler in every comment of someone who has read the books, you will likely find hundreds that you imagine are there, when in reality there are next to none.

Hotard is right. I have checked in very little here, but the trend is clearly leaning toward someone dropping a spoiler. Major or minor. Some people just can't control themselves.

i agree that stuff like "man, <x> gets so good in later books!" can be a spoiler...but where does it end?

can i say "that character is my favorite out of the whole series!" even if we just met them? is even that too far?

No, I don't expect anything, which is the whole point of this entire story. You're never really sure what to expect, and who will die or not. Each character will be in situations that could be deadly, and acknowledging that they are still around at the end of the season, or in future seasons, ruins any suspense about their fate for those watching or reading the story for the first time.

I'm not upset about the exchanges, there are many exchanges I am looking forward to as well. It's the saying that two specific characters will be around all season. If you know they will be around all season, there is no suspense if they get in to a dangerous situation earlier in the season and it ruins some of the effect of the story.

One of the best things about the story is not knowing who survives and that any character could die in the next chapter no matter how important they are.

The internet is full of people who either

a - Don't give a ****
b - Have poor reading comprehension

I watched last nights episode and clicked on a thread titled "(4 Those That Havent Read The Book NO SPOILERS)". Because, you know, I assumed it was for people who hadn't read the book. Then literally on page 1, people begin discussing things from the book. What the ****?

At first I was surprised by this but then I remembered the universal truth of the internet. People are ****ing retarded or don't give a ****. I will now acknowledge this truth and stay off this thread.

To those of you who also have not read the books I will leave this "prophecy". Spoilers will 100% be dropped on this thread. This is a thread full of people who have already read the books. It may be inadvertant, but it will happen. Attempting to use basic logic like "Why don't you post on the thread titled 'for those who have read the books'?" will not work. Accept it and move on.

I offer an alternative to message board postings. Just stick to reading critical recaps such as Greenwald or Sepinall.

Pretty solid advice by jeffdjohnson.

Also, anyone who has watched the show at all realizes that any exchange involving Tyrion is generally pretty effing great. To say "look forward to future exchanges between Tyrion and ____" is just a retard fanboy way of trying to impress us with their "I've read the book" cred. Doesn't serve much purpose otherwise.

I'm just gonna stop posting anything related to content or characters in this thread. It really is almost impossible to discuss the show completely separate from the books, especially being so intimately familiar with them. For me, spoilers are never intentional because of this. I'll just stick to the spoilers thread

Best way to avoid spoilers here if you've read the books is to not comment on anything about what's to come. Agreed that mentioning anything about the future can offset any sense of peril ir more immidiate situations. Commenting on cersei and imp's dialogue implies they will both survive anything thrown their way for a while, and the baelish scene from ep 1 proves that characters might be put in perilous situations not in the books that we don't realize we're spoiling the outcome of.
Keep the convo to what's already happened (share your excitement of what's to come on the books threat) and only supply book info if its answering a direct q (like if someone asked what all melisandre's beach pyres were about).

Just curious -- for those of you here who have not read the books, were you confused by the way the episode was written? Were you able to follow who was doing what and why? I'll hang up and listen.

Not at all. There were a few question marks with the first Stannis scene, but I thought it was effective writing - a few question marks at first but they quickly painted a pretty clear picture as to what was going on. Naturally, we're not going to get the depth & background that the books can provide, but I thought it all made sense.

Anyway, nice post Aggie_Journalist. Illustrates very well that something seemingly innocent can still spoil the show to some degree. For a show that lopped off the head of a character as significant as Ned Stark before we even got to the first season finale, you'd think the book readers might grasp that even these minor comments that merely acknowledge the future existence of a character have some measure of spoiler to them.

Not at all. I acknowledge that I don't know everything/anything about the woman in red. I don't know anything about the people that the Night's Watch were visiting (wildlings...just people that live beyond the wall....). I wasn't sure of Robb Stark's wolf's name. I didn't know who the 2 kids sitting next to Joffery at the Name Day celebration were...etc.

But I wasn't left confused about anything. I just chalk it up to "the show will tell me/show me later if I need to know or they're important". That's part of the major intrigue of this show. What's going to happen next week!?!?!? I love the mystery and the way they'll swing back around and revisit things from time to time.

One possible spoiler gripe that was made above. Was I really supposed to acknowledge (at this point at least) that the Lannister cousin Robb Stark sent south with his demands resembles the ******* son of Robert? Because if I wasn't, then I'm pissed. Because without really spelling it out, you've just illustrated what's going to happen (at least to some degree).

I think the answer you're looking for is that the resemblance is not part of the story in any way whatsoever, and any resemblance there might be is solely due to casting actors that sort of look like each other, if you squint.

The "look alike" was just a casting flaw that confused my wife and I thought it may have confused others. Gendry has much darker hair than the guy Robb sent anyway but their faces look similar though they have absolutely nothing to do with each other. I thought it would be helpful to point that out if someone else was confused.

I've read three books which puts me in a sticky situation on these threads... I know too much to post here, and it's scary to browse a thread with info from books 4 & 5...

Personally, I'm going to try and stick to lurking here... this thread is really designed for a conversation based on ZERO knowledge outside of what has been shown by HBO only (their episodes, episode guides, trailers, etc.)...

Fanboys like myself have no reason to discuss here because it is incredibly easy to drop a minor spoiler (example: "OMG, I can't wait to see character A develop into super character A")

Last year there was a discussion thread for non-readers who were cool with minor spoilers... someone should get that going again

Edit: I'd also like to point out that there were some REALLY REALLY good "guessers" last year... you can call it accurate interpretation of common themes or some BS like that, but I must have missed the part last season in the first 9 episodes where it became so clear that there would be dragons in ep. 10... because y'all spoiled what really could have been a crazy revelation at the end of the finale... DON'T DO THAT TO SOMEONE THIS YEAR

I have not read the books, and I don't feel like anything said thus far in the thread has ruined anything for me. As for exchanges with Tyrion in the future, who isn't looking forward to those? And it's not like he guaranteed they would both be around for the finale. Maybe they will, but maybe not. All I know is I can't wait to see Tyrion's reaction after Michael kills Fredo.

wait so if people speculate on an ending of a story arc that they don't know ahead of time and it ends up being right, that's a spoiler?

why discuss the show at all then?

JCRiley09, I'm in the same boat. I've almost finished the first three books, so I can't really post on the spoiler OR the non-spoiler thread. Maybe we should start a "purgatory" thread for people who have just read some of the books.

I think when JCR said
quote:
there were some REALLY REALLY good "guessers" last year

the point was that they weren't really guessing, but book readers that were acting like they didn't know what happened (but found some kind of enjoyment in being the person that "guessed" what was going to happen correctly).

I could be wrong, but that's how I read it...
