Dan Patrick. A man of the hometown drug dealers. They've been sucking wind for 5+ years now, but they finally got the lifeline they needed.

Where's the high dollar black market alcohol sales? You know it's taxed heavily, right?

After prohibition was repealed, the organized crime related to alcohol sales effectively dried up and they moved to other businesses. If you want the cartels out of the entry level drug markets in Texas, legalize weed, and tax it. Most people are going to go the legal route vs finding a dealer on the street for their ditch weed.

Not necessarily. Would you rather have to rely on a shady drug dealer who may not be around because he got thrown in jail or got too stoned the night before, or ran out of what you want, or pay a 15% tax to be able to go into a store and legally purchase what you want and not have to deal with those other externalities? Of course, this can change based on the level of taxation.

Problem is once you give the gubmit the authority to tax something, particularly a vice, they will latch on to it like a crack***** at sunrise finding a rock in her bra.

This has been shown time and again in places that have legalized it. And I am all for legalization but the patchwork done across the Country and in particular the half-arsed, full-****** approach in Texas has to be changed.

I import from Oklahoma myself and would not touch anything from a "hemp" store in Texas. Hell, in Texas the black market stuff is more consistent, safer than the strip center weed.

The right answer is legalize it. Severe penalties for providing to minors. Hell, severe penalties for driving "high" if folks think that will be a problem.

And let's move on.

Thanks morons! I'm sure the drug dealers are excited, and I hope you sleep well at night knowing you aren't impacting drug dealers or children's access to drugs you're empowering it. The dregs will dreg regardless.

Instead, this will impact the 50s aged housewife who takes this stuff to help with her chronic back pain. The veteran who struggled for years with mental health and found relief in THC. The elderly folks who use it to treat arthritis. The folks who use it to help ease their anxiety and depression.

And let's move on.
The house bill was moving in the right direction, with the exception of limiting flower to .03% and completely banning vapes. It was going to legalize tinctures, edibles, low potency flower, and beverages, to be sold in licensed stores regulated by the TABC.

Then they went pants on head ******ed and went back to a total ban. So ****ing stupid and the opposite of individual liberty! I was watching one of the hearings yesterday and I think they used school funding as a negotiating tool. The house probably traded away our rights to get the senate to pass some school funding bill they wanted.

I guess they want to empower the black market and strengthen cartels.

It would be one thing if they were doing this at the same time as legalization, but it really sucks for those of us who don't drink. It was nice to be able to buy a low THC cocktail from the liquor store so you can enjoy your own drink while others drink around you.

Scum bags!

how is that? is the issue here that the smoke shops are selling synthetics, and that street weed is still au natural?

There's some synthetic, but most of it is still natural and D9 THC or THCa.

I wonder how many people will die when the black market drug dealers start lacing weed with fentanyl to make it stronger than competition.

The alternative could have been regularly tested and regulated delta 9 or THCa sold by shops with TABC licenses.

If it was big alcohol money, why wouldn't they have kept the original language in HB 28 that only kept THC beverages legal to be sold in liquor stores under TABC supervision? That would have been a great source of revenue for big alcohol and come with a less problematic customer base.

Everything in smoke shops is synthetic. Even the THCa "flower" the "dispensaries" sell.

There's no other way to extract the cannabinoids from hemp other than using chemicals. That THCa flower stores sell is typically hemp with THCa dust sprinkled on it.

The legal stuff is so expensive it's not worth touching. I just wonder how much they paid to Patrick's pockets to increase their monopoly. Considering the House stripped out the CUP enhancements, I suspect it was a lot.

Big alcohol could certainly bring their own products to market assuming the have production capability in places where it's legal to produce. They'd have to get hemp suppliers, but that's like any other ingredient.
