so Hegseth said that we are rolling b52s in with gps and laser guided gravity bombs. Are the laser guidance bombs guided by air mounted lasers or do we have folks on the ground painting targets like we used to have back in the day?

Buffs can be equipped with SNIPER ATP with allows for laser designating targets. Very unlikely we have people on the ground doing that. In addition, any number of aircraft can be equipped to do the same and function as an AFAC...

Could be lasered by a drone that some significant on station time.

That, too. They have the ability.

Anything with a targeting pod (or for f-35's whatever their system is called) can lase, which is pretty much every aircraft dropping bombs. Could a drone lase? Yes. Is it almost ever necessary or advantageous? Not really.

I buddy lazed for Preds to F-16's to even a B-1 it matters what the situation is. It also matters how much ordinance is being dropped.

I would bet my retirement savings there are Israeli agents on the ground in Iran calling in air strikes and working in conjunction with the IAF and USAF

it's 100% certainty- they did it during the June War when it was much harder to operated inside Iran!

I am pretty sure it is quite protected

Right! I'm surprised that they hadn't already thought of this and given it a go...

of course Dimona has been targeted many times -

this is the FOURTH episode in the last two years that Iran has fired ballistic missiles at Israel.

Has there been any reports, tweets, etc about how we plan to secure the uranium Iran currently has?

they Iranians buried Pickaxe Mountain with tons of dirt right before this kicked off to hide the entrances.

we should fly in C-130s to the nearest highway and take over the entire mountain complex with special forces. then send in the D-9s to excavate and destroy their prized nuclear storage site once and for all.

I think Israel might do it.

reports on twitter:

it was Virginia-class USS Minnesota (SSN-783) from Guam which fired the coup de grace into the INIS Dana

I hope we find out which crew did it

I would think there will be a memorial at Annapolis soon!

Fast attack boats typically have one crew. The boomers running nuclear deterrence have blue and gold crews.

My brother spent 4.5 years on the USS Baton Rouge (SSN 689) back in the early 90s. He got a little tingly this afternoon. He was on board when they had the collision with the Sierra class sub. His story and the "official story" of the small bump aren't quite in sync

Looks like an E-6 Mercury on the way to Europe. Wonder if it's launch detection capabilities are intended to take the place of the radar system that was damaged by Iran?

E-6 isn't a launch detection / sensor bird. It's a hardened flying command post that can take over control of our nuclear arsenal if ground sites are burning piles of rubble.

"Launch detection" is mostly handled by overhead (space based) persistent IR and airborne assets with special mission capabilities.

I'll be honest, it's pretty dam cool having some of you military guys or ex military guys on threads like this giving us real answers as to what or how things may be happening…. Very cool, thanks

If one was sending an aircraft to track ballistic missiles, it would be a RC-135S Cobra Ball.

Just looked up the E-6 on Wikipedia. TACAMO. Thank you "By Dawn's Early Light" for briefing me on what TACAMO was/is. Fascinating. I'm sure an E-6 in the air is completely normal considering its mission, right? Even during peace time.

Yes, they have the capability to relay messages to our submarine deterrence forces (Ohio subs) in addition to launch authority in the event that the rest of the command chain has been destroyed. Iirc E-6B's are going to be replaced by E-130's or some variant of C-130.

An armada of 'Stratosaurus' lol.
Quote:

On Tuesday, U.S. Central Command confirmed on X that an armada of B-52s, nicknamed "Stratosaurus" for its advanced years, was used in a strike against "ballistic missile and commander control posts."

To be fair, the armada couldn't have been more than 3-5 aircraft I'd think.

The E-130J Phoenix II will take over the TACAMO role for the Navy.

The USAF part of the E-6's mission will be taken over by the upcoming E-4C Survivable Airborne Operations Center.

After speaking to several direct sources, I now feel confident in reporting that an F-15E Strike Eagle with the U.S. Air Force crashed early Wednesday during a strike mission over Southwestern Iran. The cause of the crash is still unknown, though at least one source attributed it to Iranian air defenses, with both the Pilot and Weapon Systems Officer (WSO) able to successfully eject over Iran.

Following the crash, Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) elements with the U.S and Israeli Air Force - on standby in a neighboring country - were activated, entering Iran roughly an hour after the crash of the F-15. In the resulting operation, both crewmembers were found and safely evacuated without further incident, being transported to Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia. The Pilot and WSO are claimed to suffered minor injuries but were in otherwise "good condition," with both being airlifted for further treatment to Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan.

Further confirmation and details of the incident are expected to come at a later time from U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM).
