Why'd you edit that summit? Why is it so hard to admit that both teams played like **** and the better team pulled it out in the end?

When you dominate the paint in the playoffs, the odds are going to be in your favor.

The Spurs played pretty poorly, but getting into the paint made the difference.

Dirk was 4-14. The Spurs big 4 players had as many or more points than Dirk. The Spurs won the paint and kept the Mavs from being able to get easy transition baskets.

But yeah, the Mavs lost it, the Spurs didn't win it.

Cuban is essentially the opposite of Jerry.

100% agree. I'm a Spurs fan, and while Cuban comes off as a jackass, he's a great owner.

I would love for someone like him to own the Spurs after the current leadership / ownership group has moved on.

mavs did a good job making it all about parker which is how you win game 1

mavs should have stolen the game end of story.

the spurs have already mastered the mavs defense and if another game is within 8 congrats to the mavs

mavs as an 8 seed would be 50/50 winning the east

No reason to move on. Peter Holt is the model owner. You pay people to to run the team, and you stay out of the way. In that sense, he's a better owner than Cuban, Jerry Jones, etc.

I know Holt isn't going anywhere this year or tomorrow...I meant when he's dead or not associated with the Spurs anymore.

The neighbors to the south wouldn't be **** if David Robinson didn't get injured and then tanked that season and drafted Tim Duncan. They got lucky. Basketball genius my ass.

Apparently one of these modern era title runs was "unprecedented". Which was it?

27.7
8.1
2.5
0.6

24.7
15.4
5.3
3.3

35.1
6.7
6.0
2.1

33
10.3
4.5
2.8

30.3
9.7
5.6
1.9

Answers: Nowitzki's "unprecedented" run, Tim Duncan, Michael Jordan, Hakeem Olajuwon, Lebron James. Nowitzki's run, while great, is undeniably the least impressive of the list. I could easily list 5-10 more title runs better than Nowitzki's.

Mavs fans are so funny. It's like they think basketball started in 2006 and ended in 2011.

Dirks run was only unprecedented because the Mavs had never won a title before.

Dirk is an amazing player, but some of these mavs fans have put him so far up on a pedestal it's ridiculous.

Can always come to Basketball Other to hear about how good Dirk is not from Rockettes and Spurs fans.

If I could get the same consistency in my golf game, I'd win the Masters.

I JUST said Dirk is amazing.

Clearly just luck. 15 straight playoff appearances and seasons with 50+ wins were luck as well.

Well there was only one direction the Mavs could go when Cuban purchased them. The Mavs are where they are because of $$$, Dirk, and to some extent Carlisle. Not personnel decision-making genius.

This is a ridiculous statement to make. You could say this about any team who has a great player and coach.

"Lakers were good because of Kobe and Phil, not personnel decisions. Take Kobe and Phil away and it would have been different."

"Bulls were good bc of MJ and Phil, not personnel decisions."

Spurs are good because of Duncan and Pop. Take them away and things would be different."

Obviously having a good coach and great player help. But it doesn't mean the Mavs front office hasn't been good. Have they drafted great? No, but their picks are almost always late in the first round. I know San Antonio always drafts very well, but most teams don't draft as well as they do with late picks. They aren't the standard, they are the exception. But despite the drafting, the Mavs front office has been solid for the past 15 years. You wouldn't have 15 years like the Mavs have had if you had a terrible front office.

And you can't really blame them for swinging for a superstar the past few years. It was the right move (there really was no other option). We missed, abut we were still able to field an exciting, competitive team this year.

I'll state the obvious and say that as Spurs fans, we are completely spoiled. Spurs are possibly the best-run sports franchise in all American sports, have been the most consistently winning team for the past 15+ years, have one of the best coaches of all time AND one of the best players of all time still killing it after 17 years, etc.

So when we start comparing to other teams, it's hard to recognize other great franchises. I cannot stand the Mavs, I hate Cuban, and dislike Dirk as a player. But I have a lot of respect for them, and recognize they are one of the better franchises in the NBA, and have been for a while.

We can't make the Spurs the basis for all comparisons. We have to take all NBA teams into account.

Back to Game 1 -

Spurs should be very happy to get this game. They played horrible, and their defense at the end forced the Mavs to end the game worse.

I'm still in shock over scoring 1 FG in the final 7 or 8 minutes. Credit the Spurs defense, but at the same time, that's horrible shooting.

It was the type of game the Mavs have lost their share of this season. They have shown they're good enough to play with anyone, but keep falling short of finishing.

Bad shooting by Monta and Dirk (and Marion), yet they still should have won.

I don't mind trying to force Parker to carry the team, but you can't let Duncan go off as well.

I still think SA wins the series, but probably in 6, not 4 or 5 like most Spurs fans predict.

Most everyone. I think ESPN's guys all had Spurs in 4-5.

This makes ZERO sense after seeing game 1. That is quite frankly about as poorly as the spurs can play outside of the big 3. Any kind of production from the bench(which they usually get) and they run away with it. The only way this was going 6 was for the mavs to take this game. They had to. Now, I'd be absolutely shocked if it went past 5. Still think a sweep might be in order.
awinlonghorn
How long do you want to ignore this user?
so you are saying it is more likely SA's bench plays better than the mavs scoring ZERO points in 7 minutes?

mavs can't do any worse than zero points in the last 8 minutes of a game and they still lost by only 5. dirk and monte had 11 each, about 10 and 12 off their averages.

it will go 6 but spurs win.

Spurs defense shutting people down in the 4th quarter isn't really a novel idea.

Going on superlative defensive runs has been a Spurs trademark over the last few years. Dallas helped by missing a couple shots they should have made, but San Antonio has been going on those runs for a long time. They play pretty good defense most of the game, then if it's still close in the 4th they often completely throttle the other team for 5-8 minutes. That's why all the sudden Leonard was in every passing lane and the Mavs were throwing up contested midrange jumpers and floaters instead of stepping into decent shots like they had been most of the game.

This first game the Spurs were very deliberate, they played with match ups, felt out Dallas's defense, and generally didn't try the ball movement they usually have. I don't want to call it a bad performance because they did about what they tried to do, but I expect them to speed up the offense the rest of the series, which will lead to more open threes and lanes to the basket especially for the second unit.

It's still possible that the Mavs steal a game, but I'll be shocked if it goes 6.

The Spurs will adjust to the switching defense Dallas utilized. The Spurs have seen it before but it still caught them off guard a bit. I'll stick with my initial prediction of 5 games.

This first game will be the outlier, regardless of how many games the series goes, after all is said and done. I don't expect the Spurs to have as poor an offensive performance again, likewise for the Mavs. Both these teams have finished in triple digits in all but one meeting this year, when the Mavs scored only 90.

I do credit Carlisle and the Mavs for a defensive strategy that threw the Spurs off enough to give them a VERY good chance to steal this first game, but not executing down the stretch on both sides of the ball is something that has plagued this Mavs team all season long.

I'd be shocked if Dirk and Monta average 11 points a piece for the rest of the series and Harris scores 19 again. I'd be just as shocked if Duncan averages 27ppg and the Spurs shoot 3-17 from beyond the arc.

Exactly. Both teams had their good and bad in game one. Dirk, Marion, Monta aren't going to go 12/39 again, and the Spurs won't go 3/17 from three again.

Losing game one, I say no way the Mavs win the series (I know, big stretch), but nothing I saw tells me the Spurs will run away with it.
