I agree. He plays fewer minutes which can't hurt at his age. He has missed alot of basketball the past two years due to injuries. I honestly think it helps him and and the team. If he plays well off the bench one of the contending teams might try to add him to strengthen their bench.Enzo The Baker said:

Aldridge logging less mins that Luka and Bates Diop. He's really fallen from grace.
Real impressive for the Spurs to send it to OT with the guys they have but they are really missing White, KJ, and Rudy.

Keldon is playing and doing pretty well. Luka looks better every night. Couple of charges but is being aggressive and seems to have a lot of confidence. Knicks are playing better than I have seen them in a while.
Luka looks MUCH stronger physically. He's actually playing pretty good defense.
Glad they are using Luka. Get him more practice and can use his speed and size. He's getting more comfortable which is good to see.
Also glad they have been using Lyles more. Nice to see guys step up after the regular guys out due to covid.

I really can't say enough about the Spurs player development program. Missing 4 guys. 2 starters and 2 in the rotation that just went 2-1 with the loss being against Brooklyn in overtime. 9 different players have led them in scoring in a game.
Im a bit of a basketball junky. So I'm proud to say it's an absolute joy to watch this team play. Every single guy gets better year over year.

Lonnie was 1-10 and we still shot 43% from 3. That's kind of incredible.
And he could have had more but he got called for 2 charges and traveled on another play where he went hard to the basket. That is a heck of a turn around from many of us thinking he could be a bust.Guitarsoup said:

Exactly! The TEAM has really stepped up. Bates-Diop has played quality minutes and contributed. Tre Jones has shown that he could be a steal in the second round. The Spurs scored 119 points, every players scored, 6 players scored in double figures but nobody had more than 18.Ag Natural said:

Pop is killing it too this season. He's tricking up his defense like crazy. Just the last few games I've seen some box and 1s, some 2-2-1 full court press and some amoeba 2-3 match up zone. Against Brooklyn they were running some random traps when they had Harden OR Irving in the game. Its been fun to watch.
They've been throwing crazy double teams at the best player from the other team. This is not a Pop staple. But this year theyve decided to shut down Zion and Randle. I love the change up in philosophy.

I keep seeing trade articles from national NBA writers and they always mention the Spurs trading Derozan.
I know at the start of the season that seemed like a solid bet, but with the way he and the team are both playing I think it'd be a bad call. Need to get this young core some playoff experience even if it is a first round exit.
Plus I don't think his return would be that good since he's essentially a 1/2 year rental. Definitely not worth hurting playoff chances for.

Agree. Don't see how we can trade DeMar now. I think Mills or Gay would be the most likely candidates, due to the surplus we have at those positions, the skillsets they can provide contenders with and their contract structures.
Edit: I could also see Boston making a deal for LMA if they strike out on a deal to take advantage of their trade exception. They turned down a Hayward trade with Indy to get Miles Turner. Bet they are kicking themselves for that one.

I think if they can continue to trust Samanic and give him minutes once everyone's back and healthy, then Rudy is the choice for a trade. Patty too if someone can fill that offensive spark plug off the bench role.

I dont think the Spurs make any moves. LMA being okay with coming off the bench seals that for me. He was the one guy I thought they would shop around. Maybe Gay as well. But you aren't going to get much for either so it seems pointless. I promise that Pop wants a chance to win some playoff games and those guys help you in the right roles.

The thing that is confounding to me, is how Pop is really tinkering this year to find the optimal lineups when he didn't really do this the last two years. Bryn was in our starting lineup for two years straight lol.

The bubble also unlocked some stuff. Pop said it in the preseason. They were forced to play a certain way in the bubble because Aldridge and Lyles couldn't participate. Coming out if it he decided that new style should be THE style going forward.
I think this group has reinvigorated Pop. I'm not convinced he will ride off into the sunset just yet as many people probably thought.
Spurs are going to use DeRozan and LMA's cap space to bring over Viktor Sandizke and Robert Javakias and Pop wants to finally coach them both. Definitely not retiring.

Gay may not be the expert shot-maker or scorer he used to be, but his impact with the Spurs is massive. They're a team that blows out opponents (plus-9.5 per 100 possessions) when he's on the floor and they get destroyed (minus-6.9 per 100 possessions) when he's on the bench.
ETA: It doesn't mean he won't be traded. It might mean his stock has never been higher to trade.
Gay has been underrated. His versatility allows Pop to go small without losing defense or rebounding. I also believe he has embraced community efforts in a way that has attached him to the organization. According to Shams, Spurs are taking calls on DeMar, LMA, Mills, Gay and Lyles (lolz). Doubt anything happens but he's been the most trusted source to date that has reported this.

Lyles has played well lately. He's big, gives teams a little bit of versatility because he's pretty good at a lot of things, but he's also been buried on our bench when we're at full strength. I can see why some teams might look at him as someone that could contribute and it also wouldn't really hurt us, especially with Luka playing better and better each night.
