I was hoping we could get someone that could be a playmaker, but if he is an NBA-ready 3&D that can play SF, along side White and Murray/Lonnie, it could be a good pick.

I feel like we are severely lacking in playmakers, especially if we trade away DD.

Of the 3 & D wings that are available, I feel like Vassell has the most potential for developing the ability to create his own shot. Maybe not ever a facilitator though. But he should be able to jump right into our rotation and improve our defense and spacing.

I really like this pick. I think Vassell has a lot of offensive upside. God knows we need his defense.

Quote:

One of the best defenders in this year's class, with a developing offensive game that could make him more than just a shooter.
SHADES OF: Khris Middleton, Robert Covington, Matisse Thybulle
PLUSES

Elite team defender who will immediately help any NBA rotation. He is hyper-alert on rotations, disrupts opponents' actions with timely digs, and deters shooters from firing with fundamental closeouts.
Never stops hustling. Even when a play seems over, he'll fly out of nowhere for a chase-down block or last-second deflection.
Impactful on-ball defender with the right blend of agility and length to defend guards and wings, though he must get stronger.
Good spot-up shooter with a high release and displays awareness moving and cutting off the ball.
Tightened his handle to become a potent shooter off the bounce; he hit a single dribble jumper as a freshman and then 39 as a sophomore, with many of them contested out of the pick-and-roll.
Displays high-level passing vision for a wing, though he's not a primary ball handler.
MINUSES

Lacks burst to beat defenders off the dribble and get to the rimand even if he gets to the paint, he struggles to finish against contact.
Wiry frame may limit his versatility against larger, stronger opponents.
Not a dynamic shooter off the catch, though considering his dramatic improvement off the dribble he may develop that ability.

If he can play greta D and develop to be a great shooter/player like Khris, we're golden.

Seems like much higher praise than Kawhi got when we took him.

My only concern about the pick is something I heard KOC mention on the Lowe Post podcast I believe. He discussed a video that was shared and then deleted about Vassell's reworked shooting mechanics. Apparently it looked really wonky, behind the head, and may have deterred some teams. I'll see if I can dig it up

Please. Pop's still there.

He'll be fetching donuts from Austin and driving them down and carrying around luggage for Forbes and Patty.

Probably not going to be any kind of summer league to get our young guys started, so it wouldn't surprise me at all if he spent a lot of the early part of the season in Austin. I know we're all excited about our new player, but how many teams ruin young guys by forcing them into playing time when they're not ready and they never fully develop?

Well, Vassal probably walks on the practice floor and is immediately a top 3 perimeter defender on the team. There also may not be a G-League season. So chances are he gets a better shot than most recent rookies.

Not gonna let the Warriors take advantage of us just because they have fallen on hard times.

FA starts this evening. Do you think the Spurs will sign anyone? Obviously need to fill out our front court in some way whether it be be re-signing Poeltl or adding someone new. Doesn't seem to be much out there. Christian Wood? Maybe a deal with Atlanta? Their roster seems to have too many bigs now.

I guess we will see if we do anything with LMA. My guess is we trade him during the season.

With some big names on the block, I think people are waiting for that shoe to drop before making other moves.

I think we resign Poeltl. The key there will be making sure we don't over pay. While he's been productive and he's still young, he's very replaceable. Christian Wood would be an interesting piece. He really stepped up his offensive game this past season averaging 13 and 6 on 63% from the field and 38% from 3 on over 2 attempts per game. Doesn't appear to be a great defender, but his spacing would be really nice.

My guess is we offer Poeltl the qualifying offer, but if some other team throws more than about $7 mill at him, we won't match. We'll sign Eubanks to a minimum contract. Weatherspoon will get another two way contract. Forbes and Belinelli Will be gone. We still look to move Aldridge, Derozan, Mills, and possibly Gay as well.

I would love to move Gay. I feel like we could get a first rounder for him from a contender. His minutes specifically would be better used on our young players.

If we can get a good deal on any vet, we should take it. However, Rudy isn't currently blocking any of our younger guys from significant playing time (unless Samanic takes a big step forward and proves he's ready to be a full time NBA player) so I wouldn't mind if he stuck around to be a mentor.

We also have a decision to make on Lyles. We could waive him for $1 mill and clear up a little space. But he was solid and would only cost around $5 mill to guarantee his contract. I'd like to keep him, but it wouldn't hurt my feelings if we didn't.

If we get a decent 1st at the trading deadline, move Rudy. Same with Patty.

And obviously, Move LMA and DD.

I think we keep Lyles. He plays hard for the minutes he is in. 11/10 per 36, doesn't turn it over much and hit 46% of his corner threes last year.

Kind of surprised that Gordon Hayward didn't pick up his 36mm option for the year. He's a UFA. Not many teams have good cap space, though.

Especially since he was playing for Brad Stevens.

I don't think Hayward would have opted out if he didn't think he could make it back. I also don't think Boston would have extended his opt in deadline to yesterday if they didn't think something could be worked out. This has S&T written all over it.

I think its funny how Spurs fans think completely differently than the Spurs front office.

It wouldn't surprise me if LMA and DD both get extensions. I do expect that Patty might be traded. I also expect Poeltl to be signed.

I dont think Hayward is happy in Boston. Yeah Stevens is there but he's also the 4th or 5th option on that team.
