I think its funny how Spurs fans think completely differently than the Spurs front office.
It wouldn't surprise me if LMA and DD both get extensions. I do expect that Patty might be traded. I also expect Poeltl to be signed.
Guess they should offer you a job then.
They should.
I don't know if I would do anything differently. But after all these years I have a pretty good handle on how they operate. What I don't know is why they operate the way they do. I've always suspected they felt limited by our status as a "small market". The reality is they don't take a lot of chances.
The Spurs favor stability. They actually like to lock up players on contracts even if they sometimes over pay. Fans hate it but I see their reasoning. LMA or Mills or Murray locked into a deal for a couple years gives you certainty. They don't make a lot of trades. When they do, it's always because there is a specific target in mind. Davis last year was do make room to sign Morris. The George Hill trade was to get Kawhi in the draft. They don't participate in the "gather assets" style of team building. That's different than many GMs who are always making deals in the spirit of trying to incrementally collecting assets.
The end result is less trades in general. Free Agents are targeted when there is cap space. I don't recall any year where the Spurs started the year with a lot of space available, they tend to spend it when they have it. I don't recall the last time the Spurs didn't own their 1st round pick. It's not excited for most fans. Fans want you to blow things up or make crazy trades. A lot of people think that is the only way to build a championship team. I know a lot of GMs think that too. The Spurs obviously don't.
