I figures the Bucks or Sixers would look at Bryn. He really is a great shooter.

This was my big target for this year. Portland has killed it

They've had a very nice free agency. I don't think they're contenders, but if they stay healthy could push for a top 4 seed.

I can't get over Bertans contract. I really liked watching him shoot the ball but his playing time in SA was severely limited by his defensive shortcomings. Good for him there are plenty of defense optional clubs out there who aren't really trying to win playoff games.

I expect Tre Jones to get a guaranteed contract and we find someone else in training camp to be the second two way player.

Guys that can really shoot will find ways to be on the floor.

We can start looking ahead to the roster situation for this coming season. If any of our vets (LA, Derozan, Mills, Gay) get traded, then obviously our roster could look very different. However, I think at this point that any potential trades of those guys will be at the deadline. So, here's who we've got:

Guaranteed contracts (13):
Mills
White
Murray
Walker
Johnson
Vassell
Derozan
Lyles
Gay
Samanic
Aldridge
Poeltl
Eubanks

Two way (2):
Weatherspoon
Bates-Diop

I expect Tre Jones to sign a guaranteed contract.

I realize Pop & co. have forgotten more basketball than I'll ever know, but to make this roster successful there are some things that we have to commit to IMO.
-Tempo. Due to injuries during the bubble, we saw a very different Spurs team than we had seen all last season. However, I think it worked waaay better for our current young guys than the same slow it down and run a set offense we had been running. More small ball, continue to push the ball in transition, space the floor, attack the paint, and look for kick outs and cutters. This also means that LA is strictly a center now. No more playing LA and Poeltl at the same time, because it really kills any spacing we have on offense.
-Let it fly from 3. As a team last season, we shot 37% from three which was 4th in the league. However, we were 28th in attempts with only 28.5 per game. I very much appreciate the efficiency with which we shoot from deep, but to fully take advantage of our offensive potential we have to increase our output from outside.
-Demar and LA have to accept lesser rolls. I know the bubble was a very small sample size, but we looked much better during that stretch without LA and Demar not being THE guy then we did the entire previous part of the season. They're still the two most talented offensive players on the team, but work within the system and keep the spacing and ball moving and our offense will be much better.
-Aldridge shot 38% from three on 3 attempts per game last year (by far his highest mark). That has to continue, if not expand more. Pick and pop, space the floor, and quit worrying about getting post touches if we want to have a world where he and Demar can be make it work at the same time.
-Derrick White needs to be starting and we need bubble Derrick White. While his skill set suggests he'd be a really good 6th man leading the bench unit, the last two season have shown us that he performs better when he's the starter. I don't know why that is, but it is what it is. We also need the aggression and willingness to let it fly from deep that we saw from White in the bubble. He attempted 8 threes per game and made them at a 40% clip in the bubble. Even if he doesn't shoot it quite that well, keep letting them fly.

I'm not saying these things will make us contenders, and maybe not even a playoff team. But I do think we need to update our overall philosophy and that will help us be more competitive. I may do a separate post on potential lineups later.

Right. And part on continuing the bubble success is a commitment to aggressive defense as well. This group of gaurds and wings can really switch effectively and wreak havoc in the passing lanes. Im really interested to see how quickly Vassell comes around. The scout on him is that he's an elite team defender with high IQ and great natural anticipation. You'd think that'd translate into early playing time.

Agreed. The quicker that Vassell proves he's ready to contribute and be a rotational player, the quicker that we need to trade Patty. Currently, I'd have my second unit as Dejounte, Lonnie, Patty, Rudy, and Poeltl. But if Vassell is ready to go, then Lonnie gets to slide down to a more natural guard spot in that unit and Vassell adds to the length and switch-ability of the second unit and Patty just clogs playing time from developing young players.

This season will be tough on rookies. They haven't played organized ball in a long time, there's a super quick turnaround from the draft to the season starting, no summer league, and there may not be a G League season. That's a lot to learn as far as system, terminology, etc. along with adjusting to the speed of the NBA game without the same benefits that guys get in a normal year.

From what I hear, Vassell's team defense is elite. However, his on ball defense has a lot of room for improvement. I don't think he is a 'lock down' defender. Not to say he won't be in the future. It's kind of like Murray. Good at getting into passing lanes and help D, one-on-one not so much.

Wouldn't mind targeting Gobert (assuming he isn't extended).

If he leaves Utah, he's probably looking for a better chance at a championship. For the Spurs to attract a big time free agent like Gobert, they need someone else to step up and the main piece and get us back into the conversation of top 4 seed and possible contender. Either a young player takes a giant leap, or we sign another big time free agent to go along with Gobert.

A guy I think might be a little more realistic for the Spurs next offseason that I like is Jonathan Isaac. He'd fit nicely as that athletic 4 with our younger core, if he's available.

Joe Harris and Davis Bertans signed contracts worth like $200mm in a year when almost no one has cap space.

Not sure how you can say the number of Johnny Dawkins, Dwyane Schintzus and Dickie Jefferson is cursed.

About $60mm available with 7 roster spots filled, assuming the Spurs don't take on more salary guaranteed for next year.

Nah. Have an agreement set, and sign him next summer.

His cap hold is only 8mm. If we sign the extension now, instead of accounting for 8mm, we lose whatever that extension is in cap room.

It's a little bit of a gamble. Who knows what kind of year he will have and what offers he might get in RFA next year.
