I don't think the hire says much about player selection/preference.

I think PJ and Gafford are the most likely trade candidates and if 1 or both are traded then all 3 Michigan players are squarely on the board as draft needs imo.

I still think one of the guards is the draft pick if they stay at 9, but if they move back a handful of picks I would be stunned if we didn't grab one or even two of the Michigan guys.

I like Morez the most of the 3. I think a Rez+Flagg front court would be a defensive nightmare for teams. Obviously would still need PG help but just picking from the Wolverine crop, that would be my choice (assuming PJ is gone).

The good news is May got to see Ament be awful from the sideline in the NCAAT, so hopefully Ament is off the board.

I also think it will be a guard if we stay at 9 or move up. Would love Morez at 12.

May also faced Wagler, Burries, and Philon, so should have a good idea of who those guys are as players.

Agreed, I don't see the hire of May having a heavy influence on drafting a Michigan player. The Mavs needs are heavily weighted towards taking a PG/SG type especially given that Irving is 34yrs old.

Yeah I don't think anyone here thinks we are drafting a Michigan player if we stay at 9 and one of guards is still on the board. Only if we trade back to the mid first because that is where those guys are mocked to go.

May is 1000000% taking this job to get to work with Cooper Flagg, and honestly that's about it.

Then trade 12 for #20, the Hawks 2027 1st unprotected and some seconds. Lets you grab Christian Anderson or Okorie at 20 and get into the 2027 draft.

An added benefit is you can really posture that you want Mara at 9, and OKC ups whatever offer had previously been on the table.

I'm still semi-confident Burries or Flemings could be available at 12.

Apparently they're taking Ament, if he's there. Maybe that changes if Brown is on their team, but so far everything has pointed to 10 being Ament's floor. If they get Hugo, that's probably the same type of player as Burries.

Then the Mavs would just need GS to pass on whichever of the top guards is still left. This also assumes OKC is trading up for Mara.

Not to mention there's the stuff about Rich Paul trying to ensure Burries gets to the Mavs. Maybe that's enough to get teams to stay away even if Mavs don't pick until 12.

Yeah, I've always thought they were going with Ament, but with Brown??? They are poorly run so who knows. I like Burries a ton more for that team and in general.

They gave him the free agent max. No team could have offered more than that. Plus player option on back end

Last year 16 to 11 was two seconds and a unprotected 1st. So 9 should be a little more rich, especially in this draft

I do now seriously wonder what their plans are for Kyrie now. This feels like a line of demarcation type of hire, where May is coming to Dallas to coach Cooper Flagg and to be apart of HIS future and whoever they draft this year. This feels like a forward thinking hire to the point of where you're going to want to go forward with a sort of clean slate.

Kyrie is in his twilight years and coming off a big injury... Flagg was just a rookie and is the future.

So yeah, they have to kinda start building around Flagg and forward-think at this point. Dallas isn't a "we're missing one piece and we can win a title" team.

It can be forward-thinking and also have nothing to do with Kyrie, IMO.

There has been so much reporting out there about the Mavs shopping Gaff, Klay, Naji, and PJ. We haven't heard anything on the Kyrie front in some time, and it had the tone of "teams are asking and getting stonewalled."

I'd need to be blown away for a Kyrie deal. Like a good young player or two plus multiple decent draft picks. I think he's going to play a big leadership role on this team as well as help bring along whichever young guards we acquire over the next several years.

Seriously wtf is this trade… They are moving back 5 spots to get off of Randle and Chicago just gets Nic Claxton….

Chicago adding Claxton, probably Caleb Wilson, and the number 15 pick will make them a fun watch next year.
