lol let's relax. He's a summer league sideshow until proven otherwise (45' inch vert is fun!). The Mavs season will hinge on Free Agency/Trade, not on anyone they draft tonight.


The sticking point is that they sat there as playable guys were selected basically every pick in the 2nd before us. Sharp and Nickel are rotation guys who went like one pick before and 3 picks before us. Just a bit frustrating

I kinda understand trading him after he just had his healthiest season and cashing in.

But, imo, this completely misunderstands his impact on the players around him. Kon doesn't have anywhere near the season he had if Lamelo doesn't play almost every game. You're basically hitting reset.

I don't really understand this for either side. For Minnesota, Naz Reid was a huge part of your identity and you just traded for a guy who almost never plays 50 games. I don't really like Ant and Lamelo fitting on the court together.

For Charlotte, you're looking at bringing back Coby White to be your lead ball handler. All of your playmaking is gone.

It's a lose lose imo. I completely understand wanting to take a swing and get someone next to Ant, but Lamelo is pretty far down that list imo. Why not take a swing with Fox?

I would 100% rather have Fox than LaMelo in Minnesota though. Not even a question. I know he's expensive and he's coming off a bad finals, but he's still a good basketball player. They're also trying to win with Ant to keep him from leaving. If I have to take on a less than stellar contract to make sure Ant stays then I'm doing it.

Fox, Ayo, Ant, McDaniels, and Gobert looks better to me than LaMelo, Ayo, Ant, McDaniels and Gobert. I can see the argument because the upside seems pretty high if LaMelo repeats what he did last year, because he really does make guys around him a lot better. But it just seems like a major, major risk for a guy whose essentially done it for one year. Say LaMelo gets hurt this and misses 65% of the games. Ant is one foot out the door then.

Maybe. Their best rostered power forward is Julian Phillips. They don't have the full MLE


Maybe they expect John Collins to take the tpmle?

Makes 0 sense for Charlotte. They were like the best team in the league when healthy and they're so young. It's insane they pulled the plug before giving it a chance with all these guys having another year to mesh. Like, does that offer get materially worse if they wait until Jan to see what they have first? Plus, those are DOG**** swaps (2 of them are the 'lesser of' swaps that Minn already owes to Utah, teams projected to be better than Charlotte).

Yeah, the only way it makes sense for Charlotte is they just do not trust Lamelo to stay healthy. I do understand cashing in while you can when his value is higher than it will probably ever be, but you should get better pick return and/or better player return.

They could still compete, but they need a primary playmaker. Was there nobody willing to give them a young lead guard? Could they not have moved Lamelo before or during the draft to try to get one of the PGs in this draft? Why did they not take Philon instead of Anderson at 18? None of it makes any sense.

They are signing Coby White, who is nice as a bench scorer or secondary scorer. But they will be relying on him, Miller, and Anderson to set up Kon and their bigs. That's not enough guard play.

I'd be pretty disappointed as a Hornets basketball fan but pretty relieved as a pedestrian of Charlotte's streets.

I did see that the Hornets now have the second most trade-able first round picks and they have a $40.8 million TPE. So surely they are making several more moves or one big move.

Yeah this makes next to no sense for Charlotte without getting another high, high level playmaker who can create for Kon and Miller.

This would be like taking Kyrie off the Mavs and replacing him with no one. We would be so far up ****s creek we might not even have a boat anymore.

Yeah, I think 2 max.

Dallas going to regain control of their 2030 pick because Minnesota will suck and Spurs can only swap with one of the two.

This team makes no sense.



But Sam is stupid and Josh Green can't be aggregated with TSJ as currently structured.

Minn is hard capped at the 2nd apron and only has 11M to fill a minimum of 4 roster spots.

But also DDV is rostered as one of the spots and he likely won't play and his contract is ending.

They can't use their exceptions except for the TP-MLE of $6M and vet min.

The roster construction is just crazy.

G: LaMelo, Ayo, Ant, TSJ, Isaiah Evans (2nd rounder), Zion Pullin (2nd rounder), DDV (IR)
F: McDaniels, Julian Phillips, Trey Kaufman-Renn (59th pick in 2nd round)
C: Gobert, Beringer, Rocco (two-way)

Conversely, the 5 man lineup the Hornets found late in the year posted the highest net rating of any other starting 5 in the league (min of 185 minutes). Bridges was the oldest player of that starting 5 at 28. And they blew it up for Naz Reid and a FRP that won't convey until Wemby is 30 years old.

They probably have more going on that hasn't been finalized yet, though. They will have the largest trade exception in the history of the NBA and a ton of space under the luxury tax.

Theoretically they could pull Kyrie into the exception and give Dallas back their pick next year plus other picks.

I agree that it sure seems like that is the case... But who could it be? Harden? Garland? Giddey?

Those are the only playmakers who could conceivably be traded who fit in the TPE. Garland might not even fit.

Kyrie sort of makes sense for them, but it makes no sense for the Mavs because he's our only decent ballhandler right now lol.
