Spurs are going to add him to our power forward rotation with Kelly Olynyk and Harrison Barnes so we can have the most washed power forward rotation in the history of the NBA

Raptors just offloaded Agbaji for CP3. Saves them about $3 million. They are maneuvering for something else.

They were about 6 million over the luxury tax, I think.

Luxury tax payouts about $15 million.

Never liked CP3 but what a way to end a career. Toronto is telling him not to show up as they are likely moving him somewhere else.

You should have retired last year with the Spurs. Spurs did right by him by letting him start even after they traded for Fox. He had a decent year statistically.

He's just too grading as a person for most teams to want him on their team. Too big of a distraction

Yep, from the Mavs' standpoint, this should be an old school trade. You want this player to help you win this year? That will cost this year's first rounder.

Gafford is worth a 1st. Maybe more because the Hawks are a ****ty team. Steven Adams+1st might make sense if you think Lively will be healthy next year. Houston is dumb as hell if they don't try to replace Adams+FVV right now to make a run. They are going to get bounced in the 1st or 2nd round of the playoffs this year if they don't. They are on Durant's clock.

Mavs can sit on Gafford now that AD is gone.

Lively/Gaff
Flagg/PJ
Naji/Klay
Max
Kyrie/Nembhard

Team makes sense, but still salary dump Klay/Caleb if possible.

Add Keaton Wagler at SG with the pick in June:

Would honestly be a solid jersey if you were like a Kings fan or something.

Mavs get lucky again, draft #1 this year. Luka opt out '28 year before Flagg's final year of rookie deal. Mavs sign Luka. Mavs take Eric Dampier Jr (just because that's the funniest outcome) with the Lakers '29 pick. Win championship in '29, '30, '31.

Stein confirms Hawks out of the center market. Because Jock Landale and Okongwu is apparently enough for them.

Mavs updated return for Luka Doncic:
  • Max Christie
  • Khris Middleton
  • AJ Johnson
  • Malaki Branham
  • Marvin Bagley
  • OKC 2026 first-round pick
  • LAL 2029 first-round pick
  • GSW 2030 first-round pick (protected)
  • 3 future second-round picks

Intellectually dishonest to not include Flagg in any of these, IMO. Mavs don't have Flagg if they don't trade Luka.

I refuse to give Nico any credit whatsoever for cooper flagg. Winning the lottery was a fluke

That's fine. But it's entirely missing context if you don't mention Flagg. AD probably isn't traded for a high number of not great picks and roster flexibility if Flagg isn't on the team looking like a future MVP candidate.

You don't include Flagg in any summary of the trade

You have to assess based upon differences caused by decision making. The perception of trading Luka by those that made the decision to do it was that it would make the team immediately better. It ultimately made the team immediately worse.

Being charitable you could say that the trade improved their draft pick from ~14 to ~11, but I wouldn't give them that credit, and definitely not any credit for it moving from 11 to 1.

First, they wouldn't have been in the lottery if they didn't trade Luka.

Second, they wouldn't be flipping AD for even less if they didn't win the lottery and get the gift of a longer horizon.

People are going to be masochists and point out the direct pieces that Luka became… But that just misses a substantial piece of the puzzle, in my opinion.

Right but they completely lucked into the 1st pick. They had like the 10th best odds or something like that. In a million other alternate universes the Hornets or Wizards win the cooper flagg sweepstakes and the mavs draft Jeramiah Fears. I think they offload AD no who they picked. He doesnt fit anybody's timeline

They came a win away from missing the lottery altogether. Nico's plan was to win a title in 2025 and instead it was a complete disaster that they fell ass backward into - then still nearly ****ed it up. Shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath

I just hope people move on some now. Sure we can bring it up every once in a while and reflect, but the piss and vinegar vitriol I hope moves on. The Mavs got unbelievably lucky and now have a legit path forward.

Bad logic. They absolutely would be trading AD for so little. They're not trading him for what they got, because they have Flagg. They're trading him for what they got, because he's been a perpetually injured potential top player in the league. Potential.

You can absolutely do the return for Luka translation into the return for AD, because the fact that AD had a high chance of warming benches rather than box scores was known when they traded Luka for him. Anthony Davis was hurt when the Mavericks traded for him. A year later he's hurt when he was traded away.

Rondo and Odom played more games for the Mavericks than AD.

It's not being masochistic. It's literally pointing out what they got for the trade. Getting Cooper Flagg after the trade failed miserably (as everyone but Nico knew it would) should not be considered in what they got back from Luka. That was never even a remote possibility when the trade was made (Nico was planning on winning the championship).

So would it have been possible to get Cooper if we had kept Luka? No, because we likely would not have been in the lottery.

But including Cooper in any evaluation or explanation of the trade is complete bull**** and is an attempt to make it seem like this was part of Nico's plan or that he knew this was a possibility if the trade failed. No one is going to accept that. So the comparison of what we gave up and what we got in return is accurate when it comes to evaluating how dumb the trade was.
Vessel
How long do you want to ignore this user?
That's all true and what other people have said is fair.

But when you look at the tweet and say "Mavs traded Luka for AD, Christie, and a first, then nothing happened for 12 months, then the Mavs turned AD in to 4 scrubs and 5 not awesome picks," I just think that misses a substantial piece of the puzzle.

ETA: I'm not crediting Nico or anything. It's just contextualizing what happened.
