Watching D'Antoni get mad is one of my favorite things about this league.

Spurs pissing away this game. Not passing the ball around. Every so often the Spurs forget Spurs basketball.

i was at the game last night. the lakers "fans" were out in droves. what a goofy, stupid ass group of fans.
Ulrich

On tv you could tell that there were lots of Lakers fans there, but the Spurs fans were still very, very loud.

Sidebar: on tv you also had the chance to hear Sean Elliot say "[Tony Parker] really wants to stick it in these guys' throats"

Going to overtime. Tony hits an amazing 3 to tie it at the buzzer.
Ulrich

Pretty decent game so far. Jack and tony with 3s at 4.4 and 0 seconds remaining to close a 4 point gap plus two made memphis free throws to take it to overtime.

Spurs with a crap overtime so far.

Memphis is a good defensive team, but the spurs offense is still wildly inconsistent.

There were quite a few Spurs fans in Memphis tonight, not as many as fans of a visiting team like when LA or Miami show up, but similar to when the Celtics come to town. You could definitely hear them when TP hit that 3 pointer.

I think some are folks who live in East TX/Arkansas and it is probably as close or closer (and cheaper) to catch the team in Memphis rather than San Antonio. (And easier to get tickets to than Dallas, most years).

Timmy with 12 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 7 blocks, and 3 steals in a win over the T-Wolves.

stat (NBA rank)
23.3 EFF (9th)
37.17 EFFP48 (3rd - Lebron, Durant, and Duncan make up the tightly grouped top 3, with Chris Paul in a distant 4th)
17.2 ppg (26th)
9.7 rpg (12th)
2.6 apg
.8 spg
2.6 bpg (4th - 1st in blocks per foul by a huge margin)
.500 FG% (29th)
.400 3PT%
.814 FT% (T-49th)

I didn't want to figure out Duncan's stats per minute, but his EFFP48 indicates that he probably moves higher up among qualified players in most statistical categories when measured per minute rather than per game. He's starting to be mentioned as a candidate for DPOY, which won't happen but great that he's getting mentioned. He should be an all-star again this year, and an all-defense mention is starting to look very possible.

Tim deserves the All-Star nod this year. Incredible he can still play at that level.

In other news, Manu out 10-14 days.

Unfortunate for Manu, since he was really starting to play better but at the same time, it could have been a lot worse.

Spurs have also moved up to #4 in defensive efficiency. Although the offense is not where it was last season and that's quite obvious at times, the rise in defense is really promising. The Spurs have finished outside of the top 10 in this category the last few years. The Spurs ranked in the top 3 in this category during all four championship runs.

Your San Antonio Spurs, law breakers.

quote:
The San Antonio Spurs are being sued by a lawyer who is alleging that the team violated the state's deceptive and fair trade practices law.

On Monday, Larry McGuinness filed a class action suit in Miami-Dade County, stating that the team's head coach, Gregg Popovich, "intentionally and surrepticiously" sent their best players home without the knowledge of the league, the team and the fans attending the Nov. 29 game against the Heat. McGuinness contends that he, as well as other fans, "suffered economic damages" as a result of paying a premium price for a ticket that shouldn't cost more.

Before the game, Popovich sent Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Danny Green back to San Antonio, saying that he believed that resting his top players for their fourth game in five days was a smart decision.

Even though players aren't guaranteed to play at any time, the lines are a little more blurred since teams charge fans more to attend games versus better teams. When asked how he thought the fans felt, Popovich admitted at the time that it wasn't ideal.

"If I was taking my 6-year-old son and daughter to the game, I would want them to see everybody," Popovich said. "And if they weren't there, I'd be disappointed."

It's often assumed that fans might not see certain high-profile players because of injury, but McGuinness said this was different given that all of the top players were not available to play.

"It was like going to Morton's Steakhouse and paying $63 for porterhouse and they bring out cube steak," said McGuinness, who said he bought his ticket on the resale market. "That's exactly what happened here."

NBA commissioner David Stern apologized to fans for Popovich's decision at the time, calling it "unacceptable." Days later, the NBA, which is not named as a defendant in this case, fined the team $250,000.

Some could argue that the Heat fans got their money's worth. That's because the team barely beat the undermanned Spurs, 105-100 that night. McGuinness said that doesn't mean a game with the Spurs top players couldn't have been more exciting.

McGuinness said he didn't believe that the Spurs were served with the lawsuit yet.

Spurs spokesman Tom James said the team will have no comment.

I wonder when the NBA will realize that you still can't drive on Tim Duncan. He is swatting shots at an alarming rate.

He seriously needs to be in the convo for DPOY this season. I don't know any big man having a more dominant year inside. 7 blocks 2 games ago against MIN and now 5 blocks tonight.
Ulrich

What's really impressive to me are his blocks:opportunities for blocks. A lot of the big shotblockers around the league go for pump fakes, give up occasional layups, and commit fouls. Duncan seems to swallow up every shot attempt in his vicinity without ever leaving the ground, and more often than not the block goes to the Spurs. Not the first time this has been said about Duncan, but it's textbook defense.

Aussie Aron Baynes departed from Slovenia this morning to head to San Antonio to complete physical and commence paperwork with Spurs.

I wonder what kind of role he will play. If this guy can finish at the rim, Splitter is in biiiiig trouble.

Splitter will continue to get start and get minutes. Doubt Baynes will have a huge role this season. Having another option off the bench is huge though because Duncan is playing too many minutes this season so far IMO. Blair will be unloaded soon and hopefully this means Bonner is forever out. This guy seems like a great fit though. Big, long, athletic, strong, great rebounder and finisher. Doesn't have the offense that Splitter has but he and Diaw should make a great duo off the bench.
Ulrich

If this guy can cut to the basket, he has just as much offense as Splitter. If he can finish at the rim without turning an open layup into some weird off balance lefty reverse, he has more. Splitter is effective in the Spurs' offense, but he is a product of the system.
Ulrich

That said, I'll be surprised if Baynes gets much playing time this year, especially in the playoffs.

Agree, and Splitter is also an average to below average rebounder for his size. Baynes should also be better in this department (judging by his stats).

But Baynes does have the advantage of knowing the system with the Aussie national team. And he has almost a full half season to get exposed, but I wouldn't be surprised if he played Toro ball for a month or so.
Sher Thing

This guy doesn't have the footwork, quickness or touch that Splitter possesses around the basket. Splitter is also a very smart player who knows where to be on the court. Something he doesn't get enough credit for. He is also our best pick and roll player on the roster.

Baynes is more of a banger compared to a finesse player like Splitter. Baynes has a good touch around the rim but he prefers to dunk the ball. That's what they mean by him being a good finisher.

Baynes was also averging over 10 rebounds per game in the Euroleague where Splitter's highest rebounding average in the Euroleague was 6 rebounds a game. They are also both Euroleague MVP's.

Baynes will help defensively and on the glass as well as being able to finish plays when being set up. He isn't here for Offense and doesn't come close to what Tiago is able to do on that end.

It would surprise me to see him playing for the Toros although I guess it isn't completely out of the question. He's already in game shape seeing that he was in the middle of the season in Europe when we bought him out of his contract. Like mentioned above, he already knows some of the system and the Spurs are obviously high on him since they are giving him a 4 year deal right out of the gate (2+2 option) + the 400k buyout to his club team.

The question is how much longer does Blair have? I'd expect him to be gone very shortly IMO.

Either way you look at it.... Diaw/Splitter/Baynes is a very solid/diverse group of big guys that are able to play next to Duncan. The combo of those three plus Leonard/Jack playing small gives us options to match up against any kind of lineup we might see.

Should be able to take care of GS tonight fairly easy without Curry. Need to come out with energy and set the tone from the beginning.
