Lebron seemed genuinely excited for the guy.

If the Spurs win 1 out of the next 2 games (Phoenix and Chartlotte at home) then Popovich will coach the West team in the All-Star game.

quote:
The coach of the team with best winning percentage at the close of action on Jan 30th is named the conference HC. Last year's coaches, Brooks and Thibodeau, are not eligible. The Spurs are 35-11 with two game remaining and the Clippers are 32-12 with three games remaining. Pop will go to Houston unless the Spurs lose to both Phoenix and Charlotte at home while the Clippers win all three of their remaining games. So, it's a pretty safe bet that Pop will join Tim and Tony.

This will be Pop's third stint as All Star HC, but the first that would coincide with an appearance by Tony. Pop's previous All Star appearances coincided with Manu's two trips in 2005 and 2011.

One other possible coaching position that Pop may fill is as coach of Team USA. Marc Stein wrote this after restgate:

the sheer giddiness you see from Kobe Bryant and other Western Conference All-Stars when they get the chance to spend a weekend in February playing for Pop suggests that hiring San Antonio's hoops patriarch would hold great appeal to a certain Finals MVP down in Miami who, after three straight Olympics, isn't sure he wants to commit to a fourth.

My suspicion is that LeBron James, Kevin Durant and any other Team USA mainstay that Colangelo wants to survey for input would nominate Pop as their top candidate to take over. Such is the reverence around the league for how he has always put his players first, which has never been more evident than it is now through this very public fight with Stern in the name of keeping his stars fresh.

Tony bringin the goods once again.

Pop, Tony and Tim in the All-Star game will be nice. Gives me a reason to watch. I wonder if Tony will participate in the Skills Challenge again.

I believe that Spurs need to win 1 more game (either Charlotte or Washington) for Pop to clinch coaching West. Also, Spurs now have 15 roster players with guaranteed contracts so there shouldn't be any 10-day contracts, barring any trade deals.

I'm confused about this as well. I read that games before Feb 1st was the deadline and now I saw that it's Feb 3rd. So i'm not totally sure. A Spurs win against the Bobcats on Wednesday should cement it though.

This could also go a long way in helping Pop get the Team USA job that he desperately wants and deserves. Getting around the Stars of the game and team some more can't hurt his chances.

Spurs gain #1 spot after OKC's loss to the Lakers.

Here's the skinny on Pop coaching the West:

From SA site:

quote:
The Spurs (36-11) have only two games through Feb. 3, meaning they can be no worse than 36-13.

Thus, any combination of one Spurs’ win or one Clippers’ loss will put Popovich on the West sideline for the annual showcase.

Pop's back tonight. Duncan looks like he'll be a gametime decision.

Rather just sit Duncan tonight. Don't need him against Charlotte.

Blair is also out tonight. Looks like Baynes may get some court time.

I really hope Tim is okay and that this is the Spurs being extra precautious.

If Baynes does play, he is going to get a Flagrant 2. Book it.

Anytime Duncan is out, especially with a knee it is worrisome but the fact that he's scrimmaging in practice and went through shoot around this morning makes me feel that it isn't that serious. If it was I highly doubt he'd be able to participate in those.

Spurs don't need to rush him back though. He is the main reason the Spurs have had so much success early this season and seeing his play decline because of a nagging injury would be really unfortunate. Even if they shut him down these next 2 games I would be ok with it. That gives him another 6 full days off before the start of the RRT.

Matt Bonner out tonight as well.

Baynes looked real solid out there IMO. Great showing by the big man all things considered.

I thought he looked good as well, especially on the boards and defensive rotations. It'll take some time for him to get to know the whole offense, but I thought he did okay on that end.

But man we turned the ball over a lot tonight.
Sher Thing

Yeah it was really sloppy. Hard to get up for games like this though.

I'm about done with Gary Neal. If he does play he has to be at the 2 and not the primary ball-handler. The PG experiment should be over with him. He's just awful at times as the ball handler and goes into full out chucker mode way too often. If he is in the game he needs to be playing the Danny Green spot up 3 pointer role but even at that point he is way to much of a liability defensively. I wouldn't mind seeing Patty start to get more minutes again even though he has been less then impressive when given a chance as well.

On a good note, Kawhi Leonard will be participating in the Rising Stars Rookie/Sophomore game over All-Star Weekend.
Enzo The Baker

Yea I get frustrated by Neal too. But other than Manu, he's the only one who can really generate his own offense off of the bench, which the Spurs desperately need at times.
Sher Thing
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
I understand why he gets minutes during the regular season but wow he really needs to chill the f out with the shot selection sometimes. It's horrible. And some of that blame goes to the coaching staff for putting the ball in his hands too much.

Once the playoffs start Manu will essentially become the "backup pg" when Tony isn't on the court but he can't sustain that role through an entire 82 game season.

Neal also plays the worst defense on the entire roster. That includes everybody.

"Exercise no-trade clause" was funny. TD to play on Saturday per SA Express.

AB assigned to the Toros. So surprise there.

There have been reports that GSW are interested in Blair, but they don't have any pieces that they are willing to part with that we're interested in.
Sher Thing

It's probably a short stint with the Toros to get his wind back and get a couple games in. Spurs only have 1 game in the next 5 days and with Duncan back his opportunities are pretty limited there. Letting him get a couple games in with the Toros seems like a good move. We have seen the Spurs do this with De Colo several times already this season. He'll be recalled in a few days.

As for the GSW rumor, they seem like a team that would be interested but the Spurs already have a pretty full roster right now so I'm not sure the Spurs want anything more then a pick/cash for DeJuan.
