Woj repoted 2 years 6mil.

The room exception is 2 years 5.4mil.

If that's what the deal is than the Spurs must have a plan to stay under the cap via amnesty or salary dump to sign another player.

The Spurs can still create in the area of $5M - $6M in cap space by renouncing the rights to Neal and amnestying Bonner if they choose. They lose a lot of shooting in that scenario so signing a guy like Belinelli with the room exception would make a lot of sense.

Here's to hoping that happens. If the Spurs dug into the MLE to sign Belinelli it would be a little disappointing.

If the Spurs do take the above route I mentioned Green and Kawhi would be the only Americans left on the roster.

Bellinelli agreed to a 2 year, 6 million dollar contract with the Spurs.

Gary Neal, we hardly knew ya'.

Yeah Neal should be gone.

If the Spurs renounce his rights and Amnesty Bonner we should have MLE money to spend (assuming Belinelli has agreed to take the room exception).

We should also look to try and unload De Colo, who will be buried on the bench by a slew of guards. If we can accomplish that we would have closer to 6.5M-7M to offer another FA (AK).

I like the Belineli signing. He's an upgrade over Neal and I like the way he played in the playoffs. I think Pop is trying to isolate Kawhi and Danny as the only Americans.

So do the Spurs still have the MLE to offer AK47? Would they have to amnesty Bonner and renounce Neal to have room?

Depends if Marco took the room exception or not

I really need to spend more time learning how cap space, MLE, room exceptions, etc. works so I can actually understand what these signings mean for room left. We still haven't addressed a backup for Kawhi, so regardless if we have the room to offer AK47, we'll get somebody for the minimum.

The room exception and MLE are mutually exclusive so you can't have/use both.

Scenario 1 - If Belinelli and the Spurs agreed on a contract for the room exception (2 years 5.4M) then the Spurs would still lose capability of using their MLE. So in order to still have cap room for another player, they will have to let Neal walk and Amnesty Bonner. These two things will free up roughly another $5M to spend on a FA. The Spurs could also look to unload the contracts of Mills, De Colo, Joseph, etc and get this number closer to $7M if they are interested in that.

Scenario #2 - The Spurs plan to use part of their MLE to sign Belinelli and therefore have roughly $2.5M left to use on another free agent (whats left of the MLE), plus vet minimum contracts to hand out. Plus keeping Bonner and the rest of the roster intact.

Why are the room exception and mid-level exception mutually exclusive?

Teams that are under the cap can use the "room exception". So if the Spurs go this route that means in order to sign another FA they will need to create space under the cap to do so. (renounce Neal and amnesty Bonner)

Teams that are over the cap can use the mid level exception (MLE) which is $5.15M per season. Only teams that are 4M or above the tax line have this capability.

The Spurs, given their contract situations can play either side of the fence here. The key to them is once July 10 hits, the order of contracts they sign.

For example, once July 10 is here they can sign Manu and Tiago real quick, go over the cap and use the MLE.

Or they can amnesty Bonner, renounce Neals rights, sign Belinelli to the room exception, still have $5-$7M in cap space for another FA and then sign Manu and Tiago with their bird rights.

Sorry if this is kinda confusing I just typed it quick lol

What a great signing. Doesn't break the bank and gives us a team player with the ability to shoot. Really looking forward to see how he fits with the second unit. I've always wanted an Italian to join the Spurs. I might have to buy a Marco jersey.

Come on now, let's be fair. Timmy is American.

Great signing. A 9 ppg average, just under 40% 3 pt shooter, and 80% FT and not a terrible defender. He also isn't afraid to take the big shot late in games. At 27, he still has some time for the spurs to develop him a bit. Plus it should keep some minutes off of Manu during the reg season. Can't believe the spurs got him so cheap.

With Rockets supposedly signing Howard, the Spurs retaining Splitter just became more important. Going to be seeing a lot of Howard now that he is in the division.

Spurs are in contact with Collison. I wouldn't be apposed with this. It would be nice to have a backup point guard who can actually control the ball.

Ehh. If the report is true than it probably means the Spurs are looking at ways to get under the cap, which is promising but I'd be meh with that signing.

Darren Collison would be an awesome pickup. We'd finally have one of those fast, slashing backup PGs that always seem to give the Spurs fits.

On the other hand, that ************ is one of the ******** who fouled Sloan at the end of the game.

Jose Calderon to Mavs for 4 years 29M.

Seeing all these teams with cap space spending money is very promising for the Spurs if they are interested in making a move for AK or whoever else.
Sher Thing

I mean there's a reason the Pacers picked D.J Augustine over Collison and traded for George Hill. Collison isn't that good. He is a solid backup PG though. I would be pretty upset if that is the marquee signing of FA though.

Sidebar: I was looking at the 2008 UCLA roster. Kevin Love, Russell Westbrook, Darren Collison, and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute are all good to great NBA players and they had several more guys play professionally overseas. Stacked.

EDIT: Mbah a Moute is actually a lot crappier than I was thinking for some reason, but he is in the NBA.
