Rockets were 1 of 6 teams going into the playoffs with the talent to win it all. They were a contender just didn't play great during crunch time in the playoffs

The Rockets lost in the first round in 6 games to the Blazers, who promptly got their faces caved in by their second round opponent. The Rockets are a talented team, but there is a large gap between being good/talented and being a contender. This is what I was arguing with Rockets fans about in last year's offseason thread. There's still a chance that the Rockets could gel, maybe learn some defense, and reach that level in 2015 or 2016 with Harden and Howard, but this playoffs proved pretty emphatically that they are not yet contenders.

[the Rockets are] legit contenders.

Ulrich, I felt that way before the season. What I meant was that seeing how we performed during the season against the top teams, going into the playoffs I didn't feel like we were a true contender.

There were only 4 legitimate teams with a chance of winning a Championship: SA, OKC, MIA, and LAC.

No matter how badly Rockets fans wish it were so, you don't stand a chance at a Championship when you don't play defense and Kevin McHale is your coach.
Cry/laugh worthy for sure

I can't remember the last time Cokehead has said anything with any semblance of intelligence. Dude just tards up every thread he's in.

I'm curious about what other teams had a legitimate chance at winning a championship.

How about Anderson Varajao's unguaranteed contract, Anthony Bennett and the #1 overall pick?

Harden and Melo would need to step up the energy level on defense.

Melo isn't the answer at all. That makes 3 guys who need to have the ball in their hands to do work.

A distributor is what the Rockets really need.

Ugh...not interested. One defensively challenged star is enough, and there aren't enough basketballs to go around. I just don't see it working, because I don't envision any of them changing how they play.

We are declining chandlers team option so he's a restricted free agent.

I really don't know how I feel about this. My gut is that a team like the Cavs are going to throw a bunch of money and he ends up going there.

At least he is restricted for you guys. Wonder if some terrible team offers him too much money and he leaves for nothing. Morey doesn't seem like the 'overpay just so we don't lose our guy' kinda GM.

Houston could have had him for less than $1,000,000 next year. Instead, they are going to have to pay him long term. If he doesn't walk.

What if another team gives him a stupidly structured contract like Lin's so that Houston can't match it without terrible luxury tax consequences?

If you are trying to make a move to get someone good, having a cheap, talented player on the rookie scale is a really good asset to have.

Guess we should just hire soup to be the GM since he knows more than Morey.

Only thing that makes sense is if he is worried about Chandler walking. Chandler is a RFA by not taking the option, but a UFA next year if the Rockets take the option.

But that means they have to pay him a year earlier and he will likely command a 8-12mm/year contract.

Chandler is no longer a good trading chip. And it doesn't help the Rockets get under the cap to have cap space for Melo or Love because of the 16mm of cap space tied up in Asik and Lin.

So the only way it makes sense is if he is really worried about Chandler walking away next year to a team with cap room.

Which makes total sense, I believe chandler is not in their long term plans and they have no plan on paying him anywhere near 8-12 mill a year.

I think it is a good move to decline Parsons' option because they are worried he will walk as an UFA. You now have two options...
A) Sign him long term for the right price (8-10 million per year)
B) Let him walk if someone is going to overpay
