We turned into a good team without having to rebuild. We were mediocre and we did something about it and got 2 stars and probably will get another one this offseason or next instead of having to tank and hope we hit a home run in the draft. I'd say he's been pretty good. Also one of the stars is still only 24.

Missing the playoffs three years in a row between Yao and Harden was the rebuild, even if you didn't tank it like Boston to try for the #1 pick.

Dwight refuses to help recruit Melo or LeBron. Says they can decide what's best for them on their own.

Morey has 1 playoff series win in 7 years as GM. He is spending 66 million dollars on Harden/Howard/Lin/Asik in a single year. That doesn't all count against the cap, but if I understand their cap situation correctly they are still right at the cap next year with only 10 players returning from an average team, several of whom are scrubs. His draft record shows no stars and 3-4 average players out of 19 picks.

Morey may be smart, but I'm curious how long he's going to be able to coast on reputation and circumstances without accomplishing anything.

Yao and TMac injuries plays a pretty big part in the Morey era. Not making any excuses because injuries are part of the game, but any franchise that has that happen to them, they will go through a rebuilding era.

I wouldn't expect you to post this, but this is what Dwight also said:

quote:
"I haven't spoken with Melo personally. I know this is a time for him when he has to really just focus on what's going to be best for him. And I really believe that in this point in Melo's career, he just wants to win. He's done everything – we both have that kind of same mentality to where all the individual accolades, we've got them. We've got a gold medal, he has been in tops in scoring for a while, but those are all individual things. I think at this point he just wants to win, so it would be great to have him here because I know what his focus would be. It's up to him, where he's at in his career. But I want people on my team who are all about winning. That's my focus.

quote:
Howard added that he'd probably not call Anthony, LeBron James or other big names who could be free agents, as he found out when going through it that "talking to a lot of people can really mess you up."

But I mean, let's just ignore half of the context and pile on the guy and accuse him of sh*t because that is the fun thing to do

I'm sure it would mess up Melo and LeBron sooooooo much to hear what Dwight has to say about playing for the Rockets and why he wants then to play there.

Player after player over the years has said that the players pitching helped then make their choice. Duncan did with Robinson being involved when he almost went to Orlando.

I like this game. Go search Dwight Howard's name on google some more and post his quotes on here. Let's disect some more of them

GS - There are a lot of things you can fault Howard for, but this really isn't one of them. So far I have no complaints about his stay in Houston.

Hearing that GSW are offering Lee, Thompson, and a 1st for Kevin Love. That seems like a pretty good package deal. Would be tough to match that.

A lot of articles about rockets making all out assault for Lebron if he opts out. I don't think he will opt out though.

While it might be a pipe dream it would be dumb not to try to get bron

if Lebron opts out (which I don't think he will), Houston is honestly an ideal situation. I don't think he'll want to be in Michael's shadow in Chicago. LAC is a great team, but don't they have a lot of money tied up?

Yes, about as much as Houston. I don't think Houston or LAC are legitimate contenders for Lebron's services. They are both already over the cap for 14/15 and don't even have a full roster yet. The Clips could potentially move some of their players, but the Rockets are stuck with those awful contracts.

Clippers are a pipe dream IMHO. If they traded away Crawford (two years, at 5.5, second unguaranteed) and DAndre Jordan (11mm ending) and letting Danny Granger, Big Baby, Darren Collison and Willie Green walk, they are still only like 7mm under the cap. And they would only have 6 players under contract (Paul/Blake/Reddick/Barnes/Dudley/Reggie Bullock)

At the same time, Houston is right at the cap with no moves. They move Asik and Lin and they are 16mm under the cap. But I think Lin is pretty much impossible to move without the other team getting someone like TJones or Patrick Beverly - neither of which Houston is going to want to do.

And Parsons' cap hold is only 2mm, he is obviously getting more that that. If the Rockets DO get rid of Asik/Lin, another team can **** up Houston's chance at LeBron by offering a fat contract to Parsons. His cap hold will go from 2mm to whatever he was offered by the other team until Houston declines the contract or signs Parsons. If you think Parsons gets 8mm/year, then he ruins pretty much all of that cap space.

Even if the Rockets have to use Beverly and Jones to get rid of Asik/Lin, then they have only cleared about 19mm and Parsons getting ~8mm/year will make it just 11mm in cap space even though you have almost no one on your team.

Bottom line, letting Parsons test free agency this year may cost LeBron. Or to get Bron, you may have to part with TJones, Lin, Asik, Beverly and Parsons and you are in the same situation that Miami was in. Three great players with no one around them.

If it means getting Lebron, I'd be willing to part with all of those guys besides Bev. We'd still have Troy Daniels, Rob Covington (watch this guy next year), Isaiah Cannan, D-Mo, and our 1st/2nd round draft picks from this year.
Guitarsoup

It really depends on what a team demands to take those contracts off your hands. And remember, you have to take back $0 dollars for it to work. That is going to be hard. MAYBE someone takes Asik for that, but no one is going to want to pay Asik $15mm and Lin is even more of a stretch than that. Lin will make more than Harden next year. I seriously doubt he is going to bring in 10mm in Taiwanese endorsements to offset that salary to what he should make.
mAgnoliAg
How long do you want to ignore this user?

It wouldn't take that much. We won't have to ditch jones or Bev to get Lin gone.
Guitarsoup
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Who seriously wants to pay Lin $15mm for his 13 points and 4 assists?

Teams with enough to take Lin and give back nothing.

Spurs (if they decide not to sign Patty Mills and Boris Diaw.)
Raptors (if they decide to let Kyle Lowry walk)
Hawks (although they have Jeff Teague making 8mm and playing point)
Wizards (if they let Ariza and Gortet walk and ignore that they already have John Wall making 13.7)
Bucks (if they decide Brandon Knight and Nate Wolters aren't the answers at PG.)
Cavs (if the ignore that they have Kyrie Irving and Jarrett Jack)
Orlando (if they decide Victor Oladipo isn't the answer at PG - they also have one more year of Jameer Nelson)
Pistons (if they get rid of Brandon Jennings, maybe. Detroit does a lot of stupid things.)
Hornets (but pretty sure they are happy with Kemba Walker)
Lakers - I guess this makes sense. They aren't going to win anyway.
76ers (ROY Michael Carter-Williams)
Phoenix - Goran Dragic+Eric Bledsoe
Utah - I don't think they like Chinamen. Also Trey Burke could be good if he learns how to shoot.
Dallas - I don't see Cuban wanting to help Houston get LeBron. Plus, they have a lot of FAs of their own to sign.

This is the same reason that I don't think the Spurs have to worry about Patty Mills getting an offer over the MLE. Most of the teams with cap space don't really need a PG. BTW, that is every team that has more than 8mm in cap space. But that is assuming they renounce all their own free agents.

Trust Morey. When in doubt, ask the Kings or 76ers for a favor.

NO guys, they really want to team LeBron up with their two stars they already have and Chandler Parsons, who is basically a more talented and better looking version of Kawhi Leonard. Let's pay Jeremy Lin $15mm so Houston can pull that off. Maybe give them our lottery pick, too.
Hickory High

Clearly you guys don't know Daryl Morey's history well enough. He convinced the 76ers to take Royce freaking White!! And the Kings to take Toney Douglas and Cole Adrich!
Ulrich
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Those three players combined make less than half of Lin's salary. You can't convince yourself that you are spending 2 million in hopes that a prospect will turn out. If you don't spend it on Royce White or Cole Aldrich, you're going to spend it on someone else who almost never plays. With Lin, you are giving superstar money (about a quarter of the cap) for a mediocre point guard. It doesn't all count against that cap, but over 8mm does which is about 13% of the cap. That can really screw over your attempt to build a good team as Houston is finding out right now. Maybe if Isiah were still around, but I'm not sure there is anyone stupid enough left.

Lin is an expiring contract. I know usually that would help in a normal trade for someone but it does slightly help our chances here. Only an 8.3 mil cap hit. There'll be a time that knows they can't get one of the top free agents that will take him. If not it could be in a sign and trade for somebody.
Guitarsoup

Expiring contract usually helps if you will take on a bad contact.

Like when Dallas traded Damper for Tyson Chandler.

Houston wants to take nothing back in salary. If a team already has the cap room to do that, why would they want to wait a year for that cap room

I get the feeling that 2014-15 is going to be a "weather the storm" year with these bad contracts (Lin and Asik) and try not to backslide. If Dwight will keep working on an actual post game other than dunking (he did make incremental progress last year) and someone will convince Harden to try and play defense with some regularity, a repeat of last season's 54-28 isn't crazy talk.

I just don't think the circumstances are going to be favorable this coming season to get those missing pieces needed, and this team as constructed is not good enough on both ends to win a title...and it is my hope that I am dead wrong about that.

Thats what I would do bonfire. Outside of Lebron and Melo this isn't exactly a huge free agent year. And Melo won't make your team better.
