Militarily probably nothing in the moment, but this would likely kill NATO. I'd expect Americans abroad would be expelled from every NATO country as would the U.S. military from every foreign base.

Forget tariffs, countries would blacklist u.s. business and but an embargo on any U.S. made good. Individually no single country could do this on their own. But we would be serving ourselves up as a common enemy most of Europe if not the world could unite against. It would signal that the U.S. does not respect the sovereignty of any nation, including our allies which would mean we could no longer be trusted in any way, shape, or form.

I would love to see Greenland become part of the US, but not like this. This is not how we treat our allies.

If Greenland doesn't want to become part of the US and Denmark says it's not for sale then that leaves putting whatever military installations we want to put on Greenland, which our allies would be fine with.

NATO was very successful and served it's purpose well as a counter to the Soviet Union. The USSR doesn't exist anymore and Europe is basically lost and one generation away from being out-bred into something unrecognizable. I think Trump, right or wrong, is trying to position us for the paradigm that comes next. It sure looks like Trump is thinking in terms of the Western Hemisphere. He's removing the influence of China, Iran, and Russia from Central and South America - first in Panama, then Venezuela, and now applying pressure to Colombia and Cuba. Will we start hearing Brazil getting called out? Then add in Greenland and its strategic importance coupled with Trump's Golden Dome initiative, things start to make a little more sense. I wonder if some type of a new Western Hemispheric Alliance is on the horizon. Whatever is going on, I think we can all agree that we're living in VERY interesting times.

Yeah, it's getting nuts. Is he truly concerned about national security and NATO security? Or, would taking Greenland be another move to stop China and stop the Yuan from becoming the worlds reserve currency (same reason we took out Maduro and taking over Venezuela for the time being).. I'd love to see an estimate of how much we'd save by not stationing forces in Europe. It's got to be astronomical. It's not as though most of those countries pay for our expenses, though I believe there is some compensation from Poland or something, to where something like a fifth or a third of our costs are covered.

And by the way, about that sanctity of NATO allies, Greece is about to re-define it's border in the Aegean, in a way Turkey has long threatened to go to war with them over. But borders are sacred and permanent.

I did not have Italy being the adult in the room on their side of the pond this year, but here we are. I've read that Macron is threatening to tariff US goods/has raised some sort of bureaucratic point of order at the EU to do so, over Trump's Greenland comments/tariffs. Not sure how valid this source is though;
