Is Greenland next?

Sounds like there's a pretty clear split between the Danes living in Greenland, who wield power, and the indigenous population.

Forgive me for beating this dead horse but this first post by Ferguson is AI slop and it's making me insane that everyone's commentary has the same damn structure now. My initial reaction is to immediately write it off as fake.

Anyway, I'm quite sure we've always had plans for taking Greenland. We pretty much war game everything from my understanding. Now, they probably had/have to dust this one off, but I bet we at least have an existing kernel of a plan for Greenland already.

I really do not want us to invade Greenland, however I'm also increasingly distrustful of the Big 3 in Europe + Australia. They are anti-freedom, pro-Islamic states at this point. I frankly do not see how we remain allies with any of them going forward if they continue down the path they've chosen.

In addition, if Greenland was smart and thinking ahead to the new geopolitical realities they would entertain the US offer. Their future is much more secure with us vs a completely de-fanged Europe. The reality of the next global order will be a bi-polar resetting at best and a multi-polar order at worst. If the latter, then Greenland would be stupid not to talk to us because Europe has little reach. If China and/or Russia want to land some boats on Greenland (a huge freaking land mass), then the only ones that can stop them is the US.

That makes sense. I was thinking Trump was not serious and was just using the media to ruffle feathers in Europe talking about Greenland so much. Was thinking he just wanted to get the Europe NATO countries to finally act and build their own bases in Greenland and defend it so we don't have to build more bases and send more troops there..

Hadn't thought about all of the demographic and political changes in Europe being a factor. Maybe he is serious about taking Greenland.

There was a fairly unbiased article from Politico in the last day that, in short, said the Europeans had the last 6+ years to figure out a deal and thought it was all bluster and now are scrambling to figure something out. There's tremendous hesitancy to develop any actual military defense plans for Greenland as it might be seen as an 'ante up' for the US, so they instead are focusing on enticing Trump via mix of minerals deals and military defense installations.

There was a reference to the possibility Trump may just want to be in the history books as having done a massive real estate deal for the US, with no further answer how they might solve that Gordian knot (spoiler - it's exactly what he wants, along with all the practical defense reasons).

For that reason I don't see anything getting agreed to for a long while, but the meeting today (and any future ones) further legitimizes the transactional nature of acquiring Greenland and delegitimizes the sky-is-falling cries about US military invasion. Putin didn't sit down with Ukraine and talk out contours of a purchase agreement.

It might delegitimize the crying, but when it comes to the Left, that literally never matters.

Expect Greenland's independence (and somehow also its vassal status to Denmark) to become one of the most significant political topics in 2026 if Trump doesn't drop it like he did last term.

2. Wind power hasn't remotely been stopped throughout the US. Wind power only makes sense in geographic areas where there is actually wind. Stop lying.

3. EV cars are still getting made at a healthy clip. The only thing that's been stopped are far left wing CAFE standards that have increased the cost of vehicles to an average price of $50K. And market corrections back to actual customer demand for them. Quit lying.

Opening bid is $500-700 billion, or about $1300 per acre. Would not be surprised to see that double before this is done.

Interesting to hear the tone shift in the news legitimizing the purchase approach and throwing cold water on military action

Greenland should be a territory and NOT a state. 57k residents do not qualify you for statehood.

They can be part of Maine but I suspect they want more autonomy and would seek a different arrangement.

Would be funny if they turn out to be Turbo-Right in celebration of their newfound wealth and change Maine's voting base forever (because they run a weird split-vote system).

A Department of Defense official said it is working with Interior and other agencies to "assess the possibility of mitigating the national security risks posed by these projects" but had no additional comment.

Last year, Sweden blocked the construction of new wind farms over concerns they could interfere with military radar, amid heightened tensions between the European Union and Russia. But experts have noted the design of wind farms can be adjusted to account for the issue, and it's something US government officials have been aware of for decades.

It's laughable people claiming the mainly middle class to poor residents of Greenland would turn down being a territory of the USA (and all becoming millionaires) to stay with Denmark.

Huh?

We have strategic interests in Greenland. Europe is completely nutless and cannot even defend itself. We can't count on a single country over there to have our backs because they can't defend themselves. We are going to have to develop our own defense plan that we can execute alone. If that means taking Greenland to keep the Russians, Chinese, and invading muslim hordes out, so be it.

In retrospect, we should have just bought the whole of Mexico outright. Would have solved a lot of problems.

I wish we would have gone with option 1. Think how nice the Baja of California would be.

  • Large Territorial Acquisition ($50 million): The most extensive option involved purchasing Baja California and a large portion of the northern Mexican states of Coahuila, Chihuahua, and Sonora.
  • Smaller Land Deal ($15 million): This option was for a smaller tract of land that was still sufficient to provide a feasible route for a southern transcontinental railroad. Other price and size variations were also discussed, with some sources listing several options in between these extremes, such as $35 million for the northern states without Baja California.
  • The Final Gadsden Purchase ($10 million): The treaty that was ultimately signed and ratified was a revised version of the second option, for 29,670 square miles in present-day southern Arizona and New Mexico. The U.S. Senate reduced the payment to $10 million and the land size to the final agreed-upon border, which Santa Anna accepted due to his need for funds and increasing political pressure.
