I suspect all of this is Trump blustering to get a better deal negotiated and that could be bigger than Greenland specifically. As an example, he could push Europe for more antagonistic policies with China.

I would be strongly opposite to a military solution. We could absolutely take it but the domino effect from that decision would be counterproductive imo. We don't need Europe becoming chummy with China.

I can understand all that and get behind it, but full blown military action would cause ripples so massive it would be devestating to any Americans outside the top 1% whose wealth and position can insulate them.

Prescriptions alone would be impossible to afford or find. Not to mention food, electricity, sensors and chips which would stop every production line that requires both which are so many items these days.

Prescriptions - this is a strategic critical issue for us and one that should be corrected. However, if countries withheld drugs then they are inviting massive retaliation and they know that.

Food - we are the most food secure country on the planet (and it's not close) and can 100% feed ourselves. Not an issue.

Electricity - we are 100% energy independent if we need to be. Not an issue.

Sensors - can't speak to this.

Chips - I doubt other countries would commit economic suicide by withholding chips to us.

Frito Lay is based in Plano. We'll be fine.

My platoon in 1976 at Fort Hood when I was a 2LT was larger than that. How many generals did they send to command this overwhelming force?

I think the deal is up on Greenland. The majority of the people there don't seem fond of joining the USA.

If we cannot reach an agreement, let them be. Perhaps it wasn't meant to be. If Trump forces it, it could hurt republicans chances in the midterms due to loss of ratings. We have a lot to lose, let's not be greedy.

President Donald Trump's push for the U.S. to acquire Greenland could carry an estimated price tag of $700 billion, according to reports.

The estimate, reported by NBC News, was said to have been calculated by scholars and former U.S. officials involved in early planning discussions surrounding Trump's interest in acquiring the 800,000-square-mile island as a strategic buffer in the Arctic against adversaries such as Russia and China.

The figure would exceed half of the War Department's annual budget and reflects what officials described as a significant national security priority for the Trump administration.

Definitely a lot cheaper to just do more business with Greenland and negotiate with them to maybe station more troops there and maintain a Navy presence in the area.

If Trump said we are going to buy Greenland and build lots and lots and lots of Wind Turbines there and electric car factories, the DEMs would be all for it...We're going to stretch power lines all the way from there to Maine and the rest of the East Coast.

The likelihood of us ever buying it is probably 20% or less anyway, Might as well sell fairytales...

He was elected 10 months ago supporting independence (though via a graduated process), as with all but one party, from Denmark. Typical Democrat, talks one way in election season, then reverts to aristocratic norms in office. He will have a tough time holding that line once an offer is publicly made that the people of Greenland hear about.

We're going to be meeting with the Danish rulers every 2-3 weeks now to discuss. So, that's progress from the previous Danish rhetoric.

Some sane voices do exist on their side:

With Venezuala coming back online, oil prices are going to drop significantly. You also have to consider infrastructure needed to extract and bring to market. I'd be more interested in rare earths given geopolitical concerns with China owning the market but that is even more capital intensive in a hostile environment (granted with no people the isolation is better for dealing with localized environmental issues).

Funny you link to an article referencing Vivian Motzfelt, the foreign minister for Greenland who wanted to pivot to China in March-April and is the cause of Trump's focus largely. The PM chose a poor leader, imho. She's been in tears lately. From your link;
Quote:

"I have a very good relationship with Denmark, and we'll see how it all works out. I think something will work out," Trump said without explaining further.
After leaving the White House on Wednesday, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said a US takeover of Greenland was "absolutely not necessary."
"We didn't manage to change the American position. It's clear that the president has this wish of conquering over Greenland," Rasmussen told reporters. "We therefore still have a fundamental disagreement, but we also agree to disagree."
Rasmussen added that the tone of the meeting was "constructive" and that a committee would be formed to meet within weeks to find a "common way forward."

Just 4 months ago Denmark's prime minister finally issued an apology to the Inuit for their horrific cruelty.

Venezuela is going to take a decade to come back fully online. So much of their infrastructure is degraded. On top of that, there is still massive political instability. Private companies are not going to start pouring billions into improvements until that is settled.

Right now VZ oil has been removed from play to Cuba, India and China. Thats about it.
