Aaaaand now we're back to "the critics were paid for their reactions" insanity.

You are officially in complete denial.

Quick overview of Kevin's substack: previously was a straight ticket democrat, kicked out of Tech med school after an op-ed piece regarding the govt/medical handling of Covid went viral, has a lawsuit against Tech for first amendment violations and other issues, and has studied Ancient Greece history

Ummmm that's 7+ pages on a Tuesday for an unreleased movie.

Insane.

And everyone knows that if we cared about the opinions of Tech dropouts, or X critics, we could just go to raiderpower or X ourselves?

(OK, there's a lot of old men here who know to do neither of those things.)

7+ pages on a Tuesday.

How naive I was to think that if we had a couple low traffic days we might not make it to 60 pages in 10 days.

I guess never underestimate the never-ending bull**** from the uber-anti-woke mob and my proclivity to push every last one of their buttons.

Is there any chance that you could stop pushing their buttons for a while, because the thread has become intolerable and unreadable and nobody likes what you're doing.

According to Google Gemini, you've posted 99 times on this thread in the past 18 hours. That's really not healthy.

Really?

What else are we going to talk about at this point, with basically a week left?

Never mind that I've posted all kinds of legitimate news here as well over the past few days - more than anyone else - along with reactions themselves, which are relevant to the movie/thread whether certain people like them or not.

We're now supposed to critique movies based on where they AREN'T premiering??? As if they're required to premiere in the countries in which they take place? Since when has that ever been a thing?

I'm pretty sure it has happened a lot of times. This movie not having some major event in Athens is telling. Why would there be a warm reception for it though when nothing about the movie is Greek?
TCTTS

I'm not saying it hasn't happened. I'm saying it's desperate to critique it for not happening in this instance.

What, exactly, is your conspiracy theory here, btw? That despite choosing to make The Odyssey, Nolan hates Greece? The Greek people? I don't even understand what you're getting at.
Cliff.Booth

Cool how you alternate between industry expert calling all of us halfwits and then conveniently acting like you can't put two and two together.

He isn't premiering it in Athens or having a major event there because he knows it pissed a lot of Greeks off that he made this DEI cast and didn't include people from the civilization that produced the ****ing literature. Greeks aren't happy about that, which should be obvious.

How about not posting for 12 or 24 hours?

Do you think the the thread is benefitting in any way when we get online to 40 new posts and 39 of them are you, Cliff and LathSpell arguing the same thing over and over?

You realize that every single example you provided was based on a non-fiction story.

And that The Odyssey is a completely fictional tale.

Like you realize that, right?

Right?

So your theory is that he decided to make a movie exclusively set in Greece, and shoot in real locations all over the Mediterranean, but he's apparently so woke that he purposefully didn't put Greek people in it, because appeasing his Hollywood/DEI overlords is more important to him that honoring the very people he chose to make a movie about? Even though he A) literally only cast three black people in the entire movie, and none of them in major roles, and B) he has never once cared about diversity in his movies prior to this?

I'm sorry, but that thought didn't cross my mind because of how stupid it is.
Cliff.Booth
How long do you want to ignore this user?
That doesn't matter. It's core to Greek civilization. If it was a faithful adaptation meant to immerse you in the world the story is rooted in, there would be a major event in Athens. That isn't the direction Nolan took this thing, obviously.

Quote:

Few stories have survived the weight of 2,700 years without fraying at the edges. Homer's epic poem, The Odyssey, has done something rarer still: it's grown more vivid with age. The tale of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, and his decade-long, monster-strewn, god-haunted voyage home after the Trojan War is the original road trip, the first great story about what it means to journey home.

Christopher Nolan's cinematic retelling has turned it back into a spectacle, filmed across five countries and shot on IMAX cameras in landscapes chosen precisely because they look like the edge of the known world. Because once, they were.

The remarkable thing about the locations in The Odyssey, both in Homer's poem and Nolan's film, is that you can actually visit most of them. Scholars have spent millennia arguing about the precise geography, but there's meaningful consensus on the broad strokes: the Trojan plains of Turkey, the volcanic flanks of Sicily, the olive-draped islands of Greece. These are real places carrying the memory of a myth.

Again I ask you, what else are we going to talk about?

This thread would either have, like, 10 new posts about the premiere and the first wave of reactions over the past couple of days, or six pages of arguing, and I don't see how the latter affects you or anyone else negatively. What was this perfect in-between where we all hold hands and talk about our anticipation for the movie, or Greek history or whatever, without arguing? Especially when, for months, all this thread has been is either complaining or arguing?

Also? Counting my posts in detail, the exact hours I've been posting, and calling me "unhealthy" is just as weird/big brother. Especially when I'm off work this week and have been stuck indoors for the past two days for reasons that are none of your business. For me, this has been a way to pass the time, not some unhealthy obsession I need you to monitor.

I propose that anyone wound up about casting choices on the basis of ethnicity/race or sexual orientation WANTS to be wound up about it. They are looking for a reason. If the movie is great and you find yourself complaining about the fact that Helen of Troy is played by a black actress, that's your issue to deal with. This idea that it would a legitimate criticism of an otherwise great movie with great acting is just ridiculously transparent. We all understand what's happening there so let's please just stop pretending.

Lol... this take is so stupid.

We are "looking" for a reason? No. We have always held that these things are stupid. They are a an outshoot of the DEI nonsense that has been permeating our world for the last 15 years and more. Having an opinion that you hate DEI, then observing it being used and calling it out is not "looking for a reason". It's called observation.

If I see this movie and it is indeed "great", then it would be in lieu of the bad casting choices. Seeing a black Helen of Troy immediately takes me out of the immersion. Seeing a woman playing a man immediately takes me out of the immersion. We are all just agreeing to accept stupid because the rest of the movie is good enough for us to overlook it.

This is where I am which is a perfectly reasonable and common sense take. Both can be true.
