That's likely 50 year old airplane. Wonder if it was parked or something was trying to fly away

It was a 747 freighter delivered in the 1970s that the Iranians converted to a tanker for aerial refueling.

What exactly do the Iranians not understand about "unconditional surrender"? Does it sound better to a Shia coming from a Sunni?

I mean, SA can talk to them all they want. Fairly. They are also at war with them and have been for a long time. But they can't make any promises on our behalf.

Four Emirates A380s holding for a while now. They will likely have to divert if they can't head in to DXB soon.

Right. "Fueling speculation" by WaPo. Media is desperately trying to fuel FUD about "boots on the ground" in any way possible.

I honestly don't see how this gets done right without some of our ground troops and heavy armor or Israels ground troops and heavy armor involved. We are the 2 armies that probably have the most experience fighting this type of war; unfortunately. It's going to turn into building to building door to door fighting. The IRGC will hide behind the civilians like terrorists do...

I don't think a lot of our ground troops need to be there for a long period of time, but long enough to help the Iranians themselves along with others willing to fight build a substantial enough force and train to do their own fighting. Then we would likely pull our troops out just leaving like spec Ops people to help them out and make sure this goes right.

Give me a little help in my thought process here. We are now just bludgeoning them and breaking their will. The theocracy it seems is and was just a facade for the ruling class to become rich. A real theocratic regime would have some staying power due to the majority of the populace having buy in to what they were doing.

It seems here that the vast majority of everyday Iranians are not the zealots or under educated peasants that we faced in Iraq or Afghanistan. Could a contingent of special forces orchestrate a popular uprising of which there already seems to have and be happening to allow for a regime change?

This for some reason feels different than Iraq and Afghanistan. It also seems that Iran was a catalyst for the insurgency in Iraq. As Pakistan was a facilitator for the Taliban in Afghanistan. Who is going to cultivate and sustain an insurgency in Iran?

Just trying to think about this logically with the facts at hand.
Today, unfortunately, many Americans have good reason to fear that they will be victimized if they are unable to protect themselves. And today, no less than in 1791, the Second Amendment guarantees their right to do so. - Justice Samuel Alito 2022

Yup probably an attack on the city. Sirens reported too.
Does not bode well for my flight through there on the 15th.

There is a ton of GPS spoofing in the area as well, but this does look like a legit holding pattern

I'm mainly just comparing how hard it was for Israel to finally clear out Gaza and that is a small piece of land.

The populace in Gaza supported Hamas. I have no idea why, but they did and still do. The populace in Iran is fed up with this regime. Completely different situation.

Interesting, so Iran "promises" to not attack its neighbors, and Trump responds with an even heavier bombing? Tightening the noose on Iran, but that is not going to make the Arabs happy (not that they have a choice). The Emirates for sure is losing billions of dollars every day

Because they are Palestinian. They don't like anybody or anything. Seriously. They've been kicked out whereever they've gone.

Iran is far more modern, and there is a significant part of the populace that doesn't want it to be a theocratic state.

There is speculation that the Russian-sourced FindFace system Iran uses has been hacked by the Israeli's/CIA and this is how targeting/assassinations has been facilitated, by tracking the security teams assigned to key leaders.

Quote:

FindFace gradually spread through the Islamic Republic starting in 2020, according to contracts consulted by Forbidden Stories and its partners. One contract revealed that Kama granted a company called BPO a license for the facial recognition software on November 3, 2020, for an "unlimited period."

The tool, purchased for 4 billion rials, or approximately 80,000 at the time, could identify "100 million faces" from previously recorded images and videos later uploaded to the system "in less than 3 seconds." Furthermore, the "system has no intrinsic limit."

"Offline mode" is incredibly effective, according to Fatemi.

"They can save every possible video, download anything from social media, capture all kinds of data, and integrate it. Then they can process the images offline to identify each person, without deploying law enforcement officers on the streets. They can arrest people later, once the situation is calmer, and they have the necessary resources to arrest or interrogate that person."

BPO is not only "one of the largest suppliers of electronic, telecommunications and IT equipment in Iran," as the company's website states. It is also a shell company that the regime uses to conceal its confidential acquisitions. Signatures on a different contract link BPO to Iranian authorities. The contract, signed in 2021 for nearly 9 billion rials (approximately 180,000 at the time), focused on real-time identification from surveillance cameras, rather than running previously recorded footage or images through the technology.

The contract provided for 200 of these cameras, supported by a database of "300 million events" with "event" referring to the algorithm identifying a face. Again, there are no limits on the license duration or the number of faces that can be recorded.

That is an incomplete picture of the Iranian security state apparatus, imho. It would be surprising really if Mossad didn't hack into this system, given their penchant for getting into even the nuclear program software/data in Iran.

Reports that they did so surfaced a few days ago such as here.
Quote:

The people in the know said that the cameras in Tehran had been hacked for years. The cameras, ironically, are part of the regime's surveillance apparatus, which it uses to crack down on citizens and protesters. Sources told the outlet that the traffic footage from Tehran was scrambled and uploaded to servers in Tel Aviv and southern Israel.

The report claimed that one camera angle in particular was especially important. This is because it showed where the bodyguards and drivers of the late Ayatollah parked their personal cars. It also provided insight into the daily routines in the compound near Tehran's Pasteur Street what time they arrived and left and whom they escorted.

CNN quoted US and Israeli intelligence officials as saying they had intricately mapped out Khamenei's daily life, including "where he lived, whom he met with, how he communicated and where he might retreat under threat of attack."

The obvious implication is that the Israeli's are still gathering/collecting/analyzing data, as such.

Dude, Trump said he wanted an unconditional surrender. A promise to stop firing at everything and everyone in the ME that moves IS NOT AN UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER. Seems pretty simple to me.

And who cares if the Emirates are losing millions a day, its not billions. IF Trump sticks to is word this is over when IRAN truly surrenders .

Iranians "promising" to stop firing missiles at their neighbors is reminiscent of the Black Knight scene out of Monty Python's Holy Grail where the limbless knight offered to call it a draw. All this promise means is that their capabilities have been degraded to the point that they can't continue firing missiles at their neighbors and/or it's not working
