Agreed. He quite openly stated last season that he ONLY wanted to play CM/CAM. Went on loan to West Brom over Southampton and a couple others because WB was the only one that guaranteed he would only play CM/CAM. Everton wants him now to play RB and all of a sudden he only wants to play FB?

Honestly, I really think we just need to rip off the Band-Aid and sack Mikel and KSE needs to sell to the Qatari. I get that they are despicable people (most billionaires are) but they will likely right the ship and get us back in CL again asap.

I give up man. It is totally ridiculous that every single club trying to get our players only will offer loan deals.

As for Tomiyasu, I've probably seen him play once or twice so I can't really judge it. All he has to do is be better than Chambers and Cedric. Surely that isn't too much to ask

RE Tomiyasu... video I watched makes him look like an inverted FB that can play CB as well. At the very basic level, think a taller and faster Chambers. In his highlight videos he never seems to go to ground for a tackle. Everything is interceptions, standing poke tackles and taking the ball away by shielding the offensive player away from the ball. His numbers from the last 2 seasons are strong. Looked specifically at last year's numbers compared to Matt Doherty, Reece James, Seamus Coleman, Ricardo Pereira and Azpilicueta. Overall his numbers were very good. Only category where he wasn't as good as those guys was xG+xA/90. Everything else he was just as good or better.

It is frustrating that we haven't sold more, but most of the guys we're trying to offload are damaged goods, but the biggest issue is the loss of capital in 99% of the clubs on the continent due to COVID.

That's why you're seeing so many loans and so few purchases. Plus it makes sense to loan a guy that hasn't been that great to take them on a test drive and see if they're a better fit at a certain club. Certainly worked for Willock.

Spoiler for those that haven't watched the video yet... the Italian journo giving his assessment suggests that Arsenal should be moving to a back 3 with the signing of Tomiyasu. The more I think about it the more sense it makes...

ST - PEA, Balogun/Martinelli, Laca/Eddie
LW - ESR, Pepe/Martinelli
RW - Saka, Pepe
LWB - Tierney, Tavares
RWB - AMN, Cedric
CM - Odegaard, Partey, Xhaka, Sambi, Elneny
LCB - Tomiyasu, Gabriel, Mari
CB - Gabriel, Holding, Mari
RCB - White, Tomiyasu, Chambers
GK - Leno, Ramsdale

Part of our issue when we played a back 3 previously was that our CMs played a little too deep and it left a big gap between CM & the forward line. With White & Tomiyasu's dribbling/passing prowess I'm thinking we can afford to play a higher MF and could potentially play MO & Partey as a CM pair. You can still work Arteta's 2-3-5 in attack. Your 5 becomes the ST, 2 Ws and 2 WBs. If MO is in the CM spot he could possibly step up into the 5 with one of the WBs inverting. For the 3 MF, one of White/Tomiyasu steps up as a #6 with the 2 CM or 1 CM & 1 WB flanking them.

I guess we played Brentford behind closed doors today at Colney and won 4-nil.

Arsenal: Ramsdale, Chambers, White (Hutchinson 76), Mari, Gabriel (Holding 69), Cedric: Maitland-Niles, Elneny (Patino 33); Martinelli, Lacazette, Pepe.

Goals: Gabriel 46, Lacazette 60, Cedric 76, 89.

Apparently Charlie Patino made a really big impact and played 60 minutes

I've seen 2-3 "podcast" videos in the last several days where the host and/or person being interviewed were very skeptical of Arteta finishing the season as our manager. All of them however also said they felt this window setup a roster that several accomplished managers would be happy to take over. The big knock they all have on Arteta is his man management and seeming inability to project leadership within the locker room which ultimately leads to a number of vets that seem to not care.

I feel the same. Thought Gary Neville's take that the club had no direction was way off. It's pretty clear this summer they focused on building. No signing is over 23. Contracts on the right players other than Xhaka were extended. There's a loaf of talent here. Just need Arteta (or someone else) to get it rolling

Don't disagree with you. All in all, it's been a really pleasant group of signings.

But, I think Arsenal needs to show they can actually develop the young guys before you'll see much buy in from outsiders like Gary Neville.
