He could be in Xhaka's spot but would need to work on the defensive side to be more of a box-2-box. Right now I would put him as more of a "backup to MO" type. Either way, he needs to go on loan next season and get tons of playing time.
Yep. He scored for us around Christmas, I would've liked to see him go out on loan for the last half of the season like Balogun did. I think he probably still has a lot of growing up to do. Almost looks like a baby giraffe out there.
He's insane. I hope he can keep this work rate up. Good that we typically just play once a week but will probably need help next year.

Think ESR has some huge offensive potential in the left side 8/8.5/free 8 role but he would need to improve defensively and improve his fitness/stamina in order to take the position for himself.

I would love to see ESR in that role too, it's a no-brainer. I think he can play that position and left winger. Think Patino can play there too eventually, probably in 2-3 years.
I agree that they all need to get better on the defensive end, but Xhaka isn't exactly covering himself in glory on the defensive end these days either. It was his poor defensive play that gave up that 2nd goal vs Watford. And we all know how he can stick a leg out and draw a penalty, or grab a player and get a red.
I think more than defensive play, it's his leadership and experience that Arteta values. You can't have every player out there at 20-24 years old.

Maybe I'm misremembering but Xhaka's ****ty pass led to the second goal against Watford. Other than that, he's been on a pretty good run overall.

You are remembering correctly. The 2nd goal was caused by a poor choice to pass across the field rather than play something higher percentage. His new role is less reliant on him defensively but still requires him to track back and help Partey cover. I'm not trying to come down on Xhaka, I think he's trying hard to play a position that doesn't exactly suit him, and he has had a few good defensive plays like when he headed away a cross (against I think Brentford) that may well have been a goal. He's been a good professional.
I'm just saying I don't think his defensive contribution is so outstanding that it's something that ESR couldn't match, in time. In fact, I think ESR is already a better presser than Xhaka.
Maybe Arteta just values Xhaka's experience or maybe he just wants more training for ESR in that role with the additional defensive responsibilities in mind before he gives it a try. I know I'd love to see it, even if in a limited role, like coming on in the 65th minute for Xhaka.

He has actually played ESR in that role already. Was during AFCON. Don't recall the fixture but it was one of the first where we played a 4-3-3. ESR didn't start but we finished the game with Sambi, ESR & MO in the MF.
