I think if you're bringing 4-5 starters, I'd be mightily impressed. Also depends on who we keep. With what is supposed to be a massive overhaul, we haven't gotten anyone out the door either yet, although it sounds like Xhaka is close. Without Europe, we don't exactly need the squad depth from years past. At the same time, we all know that Arsenal players managing to stay healthy is always an issue.

I thought it was funny that there was a mini-meltdown on Reddit yesterday when it was announced de Paul was probably going to go Atletico. We are currently being linked to every name in the book in terms of transfers and it is really riling the fans up.

The latest one is James Maddison from Leicester. I think he's a great target, but man that could probably a 70-80m transfer. It just doesn't seem realistic when we have so many holes to fill. But when that transfer doesn't happen, people are going to lose their *****

Depends. Chelsea and City are tough out, but we have to be beating the promotion sides and Burnley. For spurs it really depends on how their summer goes. If the rumors of them losing Kane and Son are true, then they'll be a shell of their former selves. But I do agree, if he only wins 2 matches in that first 6, he's liable to be gone by October.

We've had some really ****ty schedules to start the last 5 or so seasons. Kinda hoping Chelsea and City players are slow coming back from the Euros

Suggestion from another site RE the CB situation...

Simple comparison of White to Mavropanos.....and Mavro looks dang near the same but he played in Bundesliga.

I'm not entirely sold on dropping 50m on White

How did you compare?
From what i have seen of Mavro he plays like a more modile Sokratis. Has a habit of lunging into tackles and because of that he can be burned badly if he misses. Didnt really bite him at Stuttgart because he played on the right in a 3 back formation. Always had 2 guys covering if/when he missed a tackle.

I watched quite a bit of Mavro during the season and then been watching parts of Brighton matches. Like I said very simple comparison. I'd agree with your assessment on Mavro. A faster version of Sokratis. He does dive in quite a bit, but his reading of the match has improved over the last year. White on the other hand seems more conservative in his decision making. He is the better defender overall, but is it worth dropping a possible 50m on when we are desperate to improve other areas of the pitch. One thing I think Mavro is much better at is ball progression and passing. If we are determined to play out of the back, then I think that skill set reaches a higher value. I'm certainly not saying that Ben White wouldn't be a good signing. I think he would. Just not sure its the absolute first thing we need to do.

I'd also be concerned with bringing in another RCB that is only 23. If we do that, my only assumption is that we plan to sell Saliba. Why would you bring another, very expensive, young CB. Imagine spending 30m on a player that never makes a competitive start for the club. It would be ridiculous.

I don't think we need to be signing any CB this window. Our goals against was very good last season and any deficiencies we had were more due to a sheet MF then CBs. Other than the fact that we have more pressing needs, my biggest issue bringing in a CB is that it leads many journos to the conclusion that Arteta may not give Saliba a legit chance. Mavro was never gonna stay. Arteta doesn't rate him and the fact that we are only getting 7m is an indication that he isn't rated terribly highly by anyone with money to spend.

If they are spending that kind of money he will most certainly be brought in to start. And given our fixtures next season we only need 3 1st team CBs, 4 absolute max. That means someone has to move to maintain a balance in numbers.

  • Gabi isn't going anywhere. He is an Arteta signing and only 23.
  • Holding is arguably our best remaining CB but buying White directly replaces him in the starting spot. He was almost sent out on loan last summer and was only kept around due to injuries. Even then, Arteta only seemed to play him when he had to, often choosing Mustafi or Luiz instead.
  • Mari is the oldest of the group and probably the best pure defender but is slow and not a great ball progressor. He is also VERY left sided.
  • Saliba is young, will be HG and is coming off of 1 full and 1 half season in Ligue 1 where he was named one of the leagues best defenders. Arteta seems to have something against playing him. Not been openly critical but it is very similar to his refusal to play other young players (ESR, Martinelli, AMN, Nelson) until there was no other option. While they aren't left footed, both Holding & Saliba are very capable of playing the left. Saliba actually played 90+% of his Nice games as LCB and while he is prone to youth mistakes he pocketed several quality ST (Mbappe) last season and is just as good a passer as Luiz.

For me Mari makes the most sense to move if you only move 1 but I am not opposed to the idea of moving 2 as was suggested from the other board above. I like Holding but A) I don't know that Arteta really rates him, B) he is likely the worst passer of the bunch and C) though he is only 25 I question whether he will ever really get much better.

I think you're spot on. Going into the summer, the positions I was fine with no changes are CB and both wings. We have far greater needs elsewhere. Unless your telling me this money for White is a tiny percentage of what we have to spend, I'm not ok with it.

I really feel Saliba can make that next step and your starting pair is Saliba-Gabriel. Holding is a serviceable back if you don't sell him. Chambers is an option at both RCB and RB.

Honestly, I am a little concerned with Gabi's inconsistency this season. Maybe it's adjusting to team/league or a weird COVID season but either way I don't think his name should be guaranteed on the lineup sheet every week. I really like the suggestion above of running with Gabi, Saliba & White. Gabi is very left-sided, White is less inflexible but is more right oriented and Saliba can play both sides equally. All 3 have shown to be generally healthy which reduces the risk of trying to run with 3. Rotate them throughout the season. Play the "hot hand" until a pairing proves to be the best option. whichever of the 3 is not starting league games, give them a start in the cup matches with whichever academy guy is deemed ready to promote.

You could in theory do the same thing with Holding vs White but I think Arteta is dead set on getting a CB.

Seeing some claims that KSE has signed off on a 250m transfer pot for this window.

Also, White is supposedly telling friends/family that he expects to be a Gunner before the end of the window.

Brendan Rodgers was asked about selling Maddison. He said that anyone that doesn't want to be at Leicester can leave but they need to inform management. So basically, Maddison likely isn't going anywhere unless he requests to leave.

I said it before, but I really believe Tierney is our club captain sooner rather than later. I want to see him stay healthy, but I'm glad to see him committing long term.

I assume that if we buy Silva, he will start at ST. PEA may then start at LW but i opted to leave Pepe there because A) he is a natural winger and B) he is the hot hand right now. So in this scenario PEA would be a W/ST off the bench.
