Man I wish we'd just cashed in last year.

Easy to say in hindsight. I was pretty chuffed when we resigned him. Which is why no one let's me manage their club.

I was all for selling him back then. Felt he didn't really fit as a ST or LW but at the time he had a bunch of goals that could heave netted us a good fee. I was also for selling both Alexis & Ozil back when their contracts were coming due and we could get a fee.

We have got to learn to not give these massive wages/extensions to 30+ year old players. Looking at Partey when his time comes.

I feel like none of the Arsenal decision makers ever play Football Manager.

If you play that a few hundred hours you KNOW to avoid investing in older players.

Someone did the math on reddit and said from Auba alone, we will save 27m in wages. The amount of deadwood we've had around the club is astounding and I'm glad we're clearing it all out. Downside is that we aren't getting anything for these guys and we do need more depth. Gonna have to unearth some gems like Tomiyasu to fill the ranks.

Stolen from reddit. Is there a more poorly run team in football ?

I believe that I disagreed with you at the time of the signing and it appears I was dead ass wrong. He went from being really good to ineffective quickly.

I blame Willian.

Well, Arsenal aren't in administration, so no, not worst run in football. But arguably worst run in the EPL, and perhaps worst run across all top leagues in Europe.

To some extent but this summer we were fantastic.

At the end of the day, no incoming. At the end of the day, I still think we can finish in the top 4 and I definitely think we'll be in some form of Europe next year which I believe was the initial goal.

Still think they are taking a massive risk in not getting someone in when we're in the middle of a top 4 battle. Really need everyone to stay fit. I am glad they didn't panic buy a player that maybe doesn't fit what we are looking for. Moves in January are hard and expensive (unless buying from Arsenal) and we're gonna need some cash this summer to continue the rebuild.

Feels more top sixy to me. Keep in mind we will be losing Eddie, Laca, Elneny, Nelson, and likely Leno this summer. Will definitely need to recruit heavily this summer if we are back in Europe - possibly 10 players. Not sure I have confidence that Edu can do it.

Saw this on another Arsenal board...

Quote:

September 2020, Arteta asked the Kroenkes to give his 31 year old striker and captain a new 3 year, 300k/week contract, and they said yes.

Now halfway into that contract, Arteta is flying to Denver to explain why he can't play his captain anymore and he needs money to sign a replacement.

I kind of get it if Kroenke says "tough sh*t, deal with it." Does Arteta learn a lesson from this? He's going to have a barebones squad for the next 4 months, and he doesn't really have anyone to blame but himself. Does he soften his non-negotiables? Or do Edu and the Kroenkes only authorize spending on young players with resale value - no Arthur loans, no Willian free transfers, no Aubameyang extensions?

As much as I dislike the Kroenkes, if this is remotely true I really cant blame Stan for this stance. That said, this sheet window is 100% on Edu. Somehow last summer must have been a fluke because every other window for Edu has been a joke. He really needs to go.

So looking at what is left of the Sr squad...

GK - Ramsdale & Leno
CB - Gabi, White & Holding
LB - Tierney & Tavares
RB - Tomi & Cedric
CM - Xhaka, Partey, El Neny & Sambi
AM - MO & ESR
W - Saka, Martinelli & Pepe
ST - Laca & Eddie

That's 20 Sr players.
El Neny, Laca & Eddie are gone in July.
Leno will be sold this summer
I'd bet we try to also offload Cedric and maybe Pepe
I'd bet that Xhaka stays into next season unless Roma throws a stupid offer at us or he specifically requests to leave.
Of the Sr guys on loan, Saliba & Balogun are the most likely to be retained and I could see us loaning Balogun again for more playing time.

So for next season that would leave us with (Sr squad only)...

GK - Ramsdale
CB - Gabi, White, Holding & Saliba
LB - Tierney & Tavares
RB - Tomi
CM - Xhaka, Partey & Sambi
AM - MO & ESR
W - Saka, Martinelli & Pepe
ST - (Balogun if not loaned again)

So, if we are out of the top 5 we will at a bare minimum need...

1 GK
1 RB
1 CM
2 ST

If we have EL/CL you can probably add 1 CM, 1 W & 1 ST/W.

Now those don't all have to be starter quality but in either scenario you need a starter quality ST and in the EL/CL scenario you need that plus a starter at CM. The rest can be squad players or younger guys with potential but you are still looking at a 5-8 player summer shopping spree.

I don't know about. Damn near everyone was saying Arsenal absolutely had to resign their talismans striker, including Josh Kroenke. He was scoring damn near a goal a game and nearly singlehandedly won us the FA Cup. I don't think anyone predicted he'd fall off as suddenly as he did. Sure we'd probably see decline, but he went off a cliff.

I do agree with you that Edu has to go. Get Overmars in here

That sounds right. I saw a list on reddit which had us with 18 outfield players left, so I was thinking 10. With 20, I agree the number is probably 6-8

It really is kinda incredible how basically all of our major money gambles have failed recently

  • Gave Ozil big money extension - play dramatically declines (he was already going downhill) and both coaches since Wenger didn't like using him.
  • Record signing in Pepe - Has had a few sparks, but bang average and nowhere close to 70m. Benched by 18 year old. Wasn't wanted by that manager. Most people proclaimed it was a decent signing at the time
  • Gave Auba huge contract extension - Player that carried us for a whole year suddenly becomes very non-clinical and can't score to save his life. Everyone thought this was massive to resign him and then he becomes completely useless from the moment he signed
  • 45m on Partey - Again, everyone thought this was a great signing, but he has had a lot of fitness issues (that he never had in Spain) and has really played only 2 great games in 2 years.

Seeing some claims that Newcastle made a 34m GBP bid for Fabian Ruiz from Napoli. Some of those same sources are claiming that we have contacted Napoli about a summer move for him. I actually like the move but I question the legitimacy given our age requirement that the Kroenke's implemented last summer. Fabian will be 26 in April so unless it is a really good deal his resale value will not be good.

Per the Athletic...

Contract extensions for Saka, Martinelli & Saliba are planned for 2022.

Isak & DCL are primary ST targets for the summer.

Sad hypothetical if this is remotely true. How much does it take for us to sell him this summer. He has two years left on his contract. This is probably just posturing for a fat raise by his agent, but you never know.

OOOOH this Tottenham match lololol

2 late goals for Southampton to take the lead 3-2 then Spurs score in 93rd minute only for it to get reversed by VAR for offside.
