Given the squad options will take this result.

For a team that largely dominated possession, we were much more dangerous counter attacking.

If Ozil isn't going to fit with what Emery wants at his position, then we're going to have to go find another midfielder that can create attacking chances. That sounds expensive.

What a nightmare start for Chelsea and Frank.

Clean sheet on the road in a rainy Newcastle with a bunch of players not starting or unavailable. Very happy with a 1-0 and clean sheet. Mhiki seems past it, I know there is very little chance to off load his wages, but I wish we could move him on.

Given the available squad and conditions, it was a rather solid result. No one in particular stood out but the team as a whole played well. Defense was solid with no mistakes, which includes coverage from the MF. Offense was a bit lacking in creativity but that is somewhat to be expected when you are breaking in so many youngsters. Only player I was truly disappointed in was Miki. His movement and hustle were great but his passing was horrible.

I thought Maitland-Niles was the MOTM yesterday. Good job of bouncing back after that OG last week.

I wouldn't disagree. I think Guendouzi was great as well. I hope he gets a lot of time this season.

Mkhitaryn's passing hasn't really been good for about two years.

With no Ramsey, I'll say again that if Ozil isn't going to work for whatever reason, we've got a problem.

I think it's just going to be too easy for defenses to sit back, force the ball out to the Arsenal wings, and make it hard to Aubameyang to get good service.

I think I saw an Arsenal pass map that showed just how little we moved the ball through the center of the field. It was scary looking. I'm hoping Ceballos can step into that role as well.

Thats a lack of confidence from the youngsters combined with poor central runs. Xhaka could normally hit some of the runs down the middle but the wingers (Nelson/Miki) weren't really making any cutting runs.

The issue i see with this map is WIllock and Miki should have switched. Miki would have done better centrally and helped overlap while Willock and Nelson could have kept the width.

I could see putting Miki on the right and pinching in to open up space for Niles but we never had a chance to bring the fullbacks forward.

Hopefully Miki is mostly a Europa League player moving forward. Just loses the ball too much and definitely not our best option moving forward.

Jeff Reine-Adelaide looks to be moving from Angers to Lyon for ~25-30m. We get a percentage of the money from a sell-on clause

Article in the Athletic about the Ozil/Kola situation

  • Initially it seemed liked an unlucky circumstance that Ozil was mugged since he was driving after having bought an expensive watch
  • The attack took place right outside of Kolasinac's home
  • Although Ozil and Kolasinac made social media posts to calm any concerns about them, things still weren't right at home. New threats were made and people were arrested outside of Ozil's house
  • After the attack, Kolasinac sent his wife and dogs back to Germany. Ozil beefed up security at his home and stayed elsewhere accompanied by bodyguards
  • During the Newcastle match, not only did they not make the trip, they were far away from London
  • Both have returned to London Colney this week to restart training, but Arsenal will still give them all the space they need
  • For Ozil, London was a safe haven of some sort after all the socio-political backlash in Germany. Even his boyhood neighborhood didn't feel the same
  • It is a major challenge for both to move on from a situation that is still largely unresolved
  • It would not be entirely unexpected if they were to seek a move to start fresh

Kolasinac and Ozil are both Germans with eastern-European ancestry and I've wondered over the past few weeks if that at all has been apart of whatever is going on. That seems to hint at that idea.

If so, that's a damn shame.

Team news.
  • Xhaka is a Sat. decision due to bruising on leg and back
  • Holding is in full 1st team training (played 2 u-23 matches, ~60 minutes each)
  • Smith Rowe hopefully returns to training in a few weeks
  • Bellerin, Tierney & Mavropanos all aiming for October return to training

Emery says Kolasniac and Ozil are 100% mentally ready to play. Although I am hopeful that they are, I don't think they will start this weekend. Would be happy with a 65th minute substitute cameo for Ozil.

Do they have a starting place on the side in general?

I would have to think the League or the Club could provide them enough security to allow them to play...

We'll see how it goes when all the new players are fully integrated, but I wouldn't play Mkhitaryn over Ozil.

I'm not a huge Xhaka fan but after rewatching the match from Sunday, he had a very good game with his long passes. I'd like to see him in the lineup again.

Agreed. Xhaka's passing ability is towards the very high end of the squad, it's just that so is his propensity for terrible passes.

Agreed. I thought Ozil looked good in the preseason. Tracking back and going forward. He looked much more energetic. Hope that will continue

Mkhi shouldn't play period unless it's early rounds of Europa League. He did help create some chances but he lost like 15 possessions in the first half alone, and he totally botched one of the best chances to score in the first half. And not to judge on just one game, but he hasn't been very good. I wouldn't be surprised to see us move him before the international window closes.

The reasons that you mention combined with his wage are the reason that we are going to have a lot of trouble moving him. I don't know that many teams would take him or Ozil for free right now due to their wage relative to performance.

Saliba had surgery on a hip muscle and is going to miss at least a month with St. Etienne. Good to know we're signing good, young, injured defenders.

Also hope to hear this new song at the Emirates tomorrow

For me, Ozil and Kolasniac are starters in our best 11. Ozil playing behind a front 3 of Pepe, Auba, and Laca; and Kola starting in front of Monreal at this point.

I am scared to think about the number of goals that we would ship with that 11.

Hopefully 1 less than we manage to score.

Probably agree on Ozil until I see more from Ceballos, but I think Monreal still offers more than you're giving him credit for

If you have kolasinac in with a back 5, I think you need a more central/midfield type player on the left wing. Auba can play more narrow but a guy like iwobi is a better fit.
