I think Arteta wants to run a 2 CB setup but our lack of MF and Luiz's shortcomings necessitated that we go 3 man. What we do next season will depend heavily on what we can pull off this window. If we stick with 3 man, we will need better CB depth. If we move back to 2 CB then we need better MF starters/depth.

I have no doubt Luiz will stay for next season but he really needs to be the guy that comes in as the 3rd CB when we have a change in formation and nothing else. Need to start the season with Holding / Mari pairing and adjust from there. Starting with Luiz is potential season suicide. He was responsible for both goals given today and for just about every single penalty we have conceeded since he joined.

If we stick to 3 CBs, then it's not awful, I guess. I would try to make sure he's a 3rd/4th option, but he's just so much more comfortable in a back 3.

He has no business being out there in a 2 CB system. Holding showed again today he should be an option above Luiz in either a 2 or 3 back system.
Man it pains me to say it, but Holding seemed like a massive liability today, especially with us wanting to play out of the back. So many poor passes and is really slow in making his decisions

The top four teams in the Premier League qualify for the Champions League. FA Cup winners, Carabao Cup winners and the fifth-placed side in the EPL go into the Europa League.

Liverpool, Man City, Man United & Chelsea are going to Champions League.

Leicester gets Europa by finishing 5th

Man City won the Carabao Cup so their EL spot goes to the 6th place team (Spurs) since they are in CL.

Chelsea & Arsenal are in the FA final. If Arsenal win they are in EL. If Chelsea win, that spot will go the 7th place team (Wolves) since they are in CL.

ManU & Wolves are still in this year's EL. If either win they get a CL spot for winning the tournament. if ManU wins (they already have a spot for top 4) I'm not sure who then gets their CL spot. If Wolves win EL, they get a CL spot and if Chelsea wins the FA Cup, I believe the EL spot that Wolves would have gotten by virtue of 7th place would then fall to us in 8th.

So basically we have 2 ways to get EL at this point...

1. Win the FA Cup
2. Lose the FA Cup and Wolves wins this year's EL Cup

And had Luiz not been Luiz today (ie we give up 1-2 fewer goals) and we took care of business against Villa we would be sitting in 6th or 7th right now and the FA Cup wouldn't matter.

Assume you mean Coutinho... If so, I don't see it happening unless Barca is basically giving him away. The quoted cash they are looking for for just a loan would eat up a good bit of our budget. Too many other needs.

Bayern apparently paid like a 8.5 million euro transfer fee, plus his salary.

If he forces his way out and Liverpool don't take him back, maybe the price drops enough for Arsenal to be a contender. Doubt it, but maybe, just maybe.

If it stays at 20 million Euro, rather spend the money on a defender.

I know I support Ozil more than he deserves, but I honestly don't see a way to improve the goal scoring and the defense without Arteta rehabilitating him and having him out there creating chances. If we can figure out how to field a 4-man back line, he can play behind the striker again.

I disagree. I think the classic #10 is dying off. Many teams have started to move to a means of producing more goal opportunities through movement/speed. Look at the current top 4. The only one using a classic #10 (or close to it) is ManU. Liverpool, City & Chelsea do not.

Well, wherever he fits in exactly within the structure, that's fine. He can (presumably) still provide the creativity they lack.

He just can't, of course, be put in a place where he needs to provide a lot defensively. s not obvious to me how that happens in the 3-4-3/5-2-3 we've been having to play with. Maybe Auba goes to striker and he can hang out on the wing. But I don't think that's Ozil's best attacking position. If we can go to a 4-3-3, I'd try to allow him the freedom to work horizontally and vertically from a #10 spot. Maybe it looks more like a 4-2-1-3.

This is all on the assumption we can't afford to fix the back line and bring in a game changing attacker in one off-season.

Watching the Swansea-Brentford match the other day, Benrhama looks like a good creative winger, that can dribble and pass. Just not sure it'll translate from the Championship to the PL.

Eurosport reporting that Upamecano signed an extension with Red Bull through '23. Release clause increased to 50mm.

Release clause was already 50m. I saw several sources yesterday that said it was a 1 yr extension (through '22). He decided that this isn't the window to be moving (not enough teams with money) and they don't wanna lose him on a free next summer.
