We've haven't played a back 3 all preseason.

We started the Fiorentina match with a back three. And then switched to a back four after half (IIRC). I do expect to see a back three at times this year but really hope that it's minimal.

Apparently Leipzig want ESR either on loan or permanent. Could become a piece in the Upamenaco deal. I don't want to lose him permanently because its considered to be pretty much the top prospect in our academy.

ESR wasn't gonna play for us this season anyway. Given the other young offensive prospects we have and the lack of quality defensive ones, I'd gladly trade ESR for Upamecano as long as we aren't talking something crazy like ESR + 60+m.

It may be unlikely but I'd be really happy if we can figure out how to land Upamecano & Rugani before the window closes. A 4 man CB rotation of those plus Holding & Sokratis would be solid. And next season replace Sokratis with Saliba.

I don't think Rugani is gonna happen. Sounds like Juventus want some huge fee either for loan or buy. Would rather just spend it on Upa if that is what it takes.

If it is either/or, I agree. But if we are talking 2 of Rugani/Upa/Tierney, I might be inclined to go for the 2 CB.

Latest I am seeing...

- reports that we have agreed personal terms with Rugani and the deal will be 2 yr loan with an obligation to buy for 40m after.
- conflicting reports on Upamecano. Some mention the willingness to deal if ESR is included. Others say they will only sell if his 100m euro release clause is met.
- reports that Galatasaray personnel are in London to try and secure a deal for ElNeny
- reports that Ozil's agent is in the US speaking to MLS and DC United officials about a potential move.

As the only Leipzig fan on this board, I'll chime in here:

1) I'd be very surprised (and upset) if we took ESR and sold Upa for less after signing Lookman from Everton. If this deal was going down before the Lookman deal, it might be a good one, but at this point, I'd consider it a bad deal.

2) I'd be disappointed with any fee short of the release clause... and still be sad if that happens. He's a heck of a talent already and has huge upside. As a frame of reference on my feeling regarding big-money transfers, when we sold Keita to LFC last year, I was happy to get the money. This time, I think even the relause clause fee isn't really high enough. Really like this player.

With Jenko gone, the team has officially turned over from the 2012-2013 squad.

I think the issue ya'll have is does he want to stay. His price will probably only go down from here if he doesn't want to resign. Teams will recognize next summer that he only has another year on his contract so most will be willing to wait and then your risk losing him on a free transfer. And we all know that if he is playing in Germany and is leaving for free, he is probably going to Bayern.

Everton apparently bid 30m for Iwobi which was rejected. They may come back with a higher fee.

I don't see anyway that Ozil leaves for DC until his contract is finished. The MLS transfer fee record is only like 15m so there is no way I see them matching Arsenal's valuation which is probably around 30m.

On top of that, its doubtful they could even move him on a free with MLS picking up his wages. He makes 350k/wk at Arsenal while the highest paid player in the MLS (Zlatan) makes ~150k/wk. He isn't leaving unless something crazy happens.

Stupid early deadline

I agree 100%. He's made comments in the recent past about not wanting to leave yet. My hope is that he backs that up with an extension, but who knows what's happening behind the scenes.

Further complicating matters is the fact that Timo Werner seems hell-bent on leaving for free next summer, so perhaps the desire to cash in on Upa is real.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a deal get done here, but I'll be very disappointed. More so than a surprise Werner deal. And I'll be upset if we knock a bunch off the deal in order to get ESR who we really don't need.

Sounds like neither Upamecano nor Rugani are gonna happen. Leipzig apparently turned down nearly 70m because they want the 90m release clause. Juventus want too high of a loan fee.

Also new rumor that David Luiz is trying to force a move to Arsenal. Peak silly season has arrived

I read that Rugani was happening this morning...but yeah, who knows what to trust.

We need a defender in the worst way though

This may actually be legit. He refused to train with the team yesterday and today attempting to force a move. He shares an agent with our new Technical Director (as well as Coutinho) and Chelsea fans are claiming that the agent is an Arsenal fan.

While he is far from my favorite options, he may not be a horrible add. Definitely the type of passing CB that Emery likes.

Go look up the highlight film for a Brazilian in Italy named Lyanco. He was brought up in another Arsenal board a few days ago. Not sure we are looking at him but I think he would fit Emery very well and he would likely come cheap.

Straight swap on the hair - Elneny on the way out and Luiz on the way in.

I read that Rugani is back on. Leipzig are pushing hard for ESR as well so maybe they'll deal Upa.

Could also see the Tierney deal cross the line. Apparently we've sold Dominic Thompson (young LB that played in the preseason games) to Brentford and the replacement Celtic want for Tierney is at Brentford which means he could be sold.

I'm not sold on Rugani, but I'll take him over a 32 y/o Luiz any day

David Luiz was great for my fantasy premier league squad last year, for whatever that's worth.

And of course it sounds like the two players may be Tierney and Luiz

Now seeing Tierney is rumored to be on his way to London for medical and we've agreed to terms with Celtic.

Edit: Tierney being reported by pretty much every outlet so that one is probably done.

Also reading that we may get Luiz for just 8m

Pretty solid lineup once their healthy.

Leno

Bellerin - Holding - Sok - Tierney

Torreira - Ceballos

Ozil

Pepe - Laca - Auba

Subs: Martinez, Kolasinac, Luiz, Willock, Guendouzi, Mkhi, Iwobi

Maitland-Niles, Nelson, Saka and ESR are going to get some significant minutes in cup games.

If we can get Mustafi and Mkhi of the wage bill this summer I'll be stoked.

Starting lineup is really good...problem is depth like it's always been

Yep, will be a major issue come November. Seems like Arsenal gets 2-3 months into the season and one player does down, then another, and suddenly we're staring in shock at Xhaka playing CB. I hope for healthy, but know the reality is the youth will need to play at times this year due to injury. Perhaps they will be able to hold their own, maybe even prosper, in a tough environment.
Strangely Attractive

Luiz to Arsenal is getting a lot of blowback and I get it, but I look at him like a 2 year fix, which gives us time to get Saliba up and going and another CB in during subsequent transfer windows. Not terrible given we couldn't get Upa deal done.
wangus12
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Oh definitely. Even if we sign him, I expect us to reenter the market next summer for another CB. He is still a definite upgrade from anything we currently have outside of maybe Sokratis

If he can stay healthy. Nice thing about luiz is that he is on the taller side at least. Though neither he nor holding are fast.

Luiz should be a fine stop gap. Probably need to still look at CB and maybe backup RB in Jan but on paper we should be good otherwise. Now we just need to offload the bloat before the end of the month. I'd bet Mustafi & ElNeny are still on the chopping block with an outside chance of Miki. Could also see us loaning Mavro (read some Greek teams are interested) and maybe Nketiah, TJ-J or one of the young wings.
