Cranston, without question
I disagree, I think it is a very legitimate question whether Cranston will win after watching the first 4 episodes of this series. MM is absolutely incredible, and I find myself completely engrossed whenever he opens his mouth. I can probably only say that about a handful of performances that I've ever seen in a television series or movie. And after last nights episode, I think BB has some legitimate competition in True Detective.

MM won't compete against Cranston, True Detectives will be mini-series categories.

What is the minimum episode criteria?

Don't think it is about # of episodes, rather the cast returning. American Horror Story does mini-series every year I believe.

according to wiki, mini-series is a singular story told in 6+ hours OR more than 2 parts.

Due to lack of decline in production of miniseries' it's now tied into the best tv movie or mini series as one award.

Wow, I just finished watching again at work. Greatness. Hart's quote "The solution was right under my nose but I was looking at the wrong clues" was interesting. Also, how important are the images in the opening credits? Just random shot's from the show or important charaters?

I think its just random characters because you see that one 'slow' dude from the religious tent group and that stripper they used to track down one of Ledoux's old running buddies.

Those are the two that made me question it. Why give low level charaters the play time there. I tend to agree with you but there appears to be a lot of imagery in the credits like 95 Chole/Hart black/ white and 2002 Chole/Hart in flames.

I thought one of the more interesting dynamics in this week's episode was the role reversal between Hart & Cohle. Up to this point, Hart was the one constantly complaining about Cohle's ramblings and philosophical rants. Hart also seemed to be the one trying to keep Cohle in-line at the office and around their boss. Yet, once Marty's affair blows up and his wife finds out, Cohle is the one begging Marty to shut up! "This is a bar, not a beside" line was great.

It was funny/sad to see Cohle "reassure" Hart after his conversation with Hart's wife in the diner. He obviously wanted to give him some form of hope that his marriage could be recovered so he could focus on the undercover operation. I wonder if that will be exposed later on...

It was also awesome to see the switch flipped by Cohle once he went into "undercover mode". You could tell that was the only thing he was focused on once he decided to reprise his Iron Crusader alias - another great example of McConaughey's amazing work in this series thus far.

I loved him checking his pulse again before they went into the project. Reassuring himself of just how cool he really is....

Just watched the final 6 minutes again. That has to be the craziest/coolest 6 minutes in tv.

you guys that have rewatched it, Cohle ends up shooting one of the robbery victims, right?

He shoots the drug dealer they had kidnapped. After he opened the back door he runs back in and shoots him.

I think he deflects the barrel of the bad guys shot gun who screams "I KNEW IT" about Chole being narc.

Yeah it's kind of hard to tell. It's one action of him throwing a punch/deflect and the kidnap victim is shot. Cohle says "goddammit" afterwards indicating he didn't want that to happen.

It kind of looks like it's Cohle's gun that fires, but after watching again I think this is correct

Not that it really matters, but I'm curious as to why TD (8 episodes) would be a mini series and BB (8 episodes) would be a dramatic series...
With that said...last night was really great. Episode 3, however, blew me away. Absolutely was in awe of final scene. I really missed 2012 Rust the rest of the time though...not near enough of him.

Because after these 8 episodes, this story is over. If it returns it will be a new cast, new case, and not related. This is why American Horror Story always competes in the mini-series category.

Because TD starts and ends in NE season or set of episodes. Whatever happens next year will be new story new actors that have nothing to do with this one.

BB was 5 seasons with season 5 split into 2. Thats not a mini series on because 8 eps aired in the final year. It's the last 8 eps of a 5 season dramatic series.

Very intense and awesome final scene.

But it didn't ring true to me. I don't believe for a second that Cohle would put himself in that situation. Going to steal from safe house with kidnapped outlaw is too far fetched for me.

I got the impression he didn't really have a choice if he wanted the biker guys to trust him and let him back in. They thought he was dead for the last 2 years. And the cartel story made me sad and sick to my stomach.

Yeah, back was against the wall to break the case open or lose it to the task force. All the suspect did was buy a little more time, they need an arrest.

Also, why wouldn't cohl put himself in that position at the time? He was fresh out of a 5 year bender where he lost his daughter, his wife, went undercover for 4 years and got mentally ****ed up, spent a short time at a psych ward then transferred to homicide. He also says his life (and all intelligent human life) is a mistake of evolution. Hes severely ****ed up, flawed, and vulnerable at that point. He also wants to solve the case and was thrown back into the very life that messed him up.

Doesn't seem far fetched at all

SIAP, but did anybody else notice that the bartender at the strip club (not the biker strip club, but the first one) was the showrunner and writer, Nic Pizzolatto? I guess a lot of these guys put themselves into their own shows (doesn't Tarantino always have a cameo in his movies?). Anyway, I just thought it was interesting to see him there.

I also think that this was a great episode. I can't wait until next Sunday. We are halfway done, but I'm gonna be bummed when it is over.

Can anyone help me out with the timeline of things... I must have nodded off towards the end of episode 3...

I thought at the end of episode 3 they (Hart and Cohle) had arrived at Ledoux's compound. But then episode 4 they are still trying to sniff out where he is and who his associates are. Where have I gone wrong? I should just rewatch them both, but figured I'd get a quick explanation on here.

Were the episode 4 events prior to the end of episode 3? I should be better than this.

The scene at the end of episode 3 was a flash forward. Cohle was talking about Ledoux to the interrogating detectives and said something about the compound comparing it to Nam or something. They just flashed to his compound and showed the bigfoot-esque footage of him with a gas mask on. I don't think it ever showed them there.
