Great show. Some of y'all watch way more into than me. I think at the end of this season, they reunite and go after the real killer and the second season takes a different shape.

Also anyone notice that weirdo from the traveling church is the the opening credits a lot? I think he has something to do with it.

This is the only season that will have this cast of characters. It's a bit like a miniseries in that way; after these 8 episodes, MM and Harrelson will not be on the show anymore. If they renew for a second season, it will be a different crime, different cast, different location, etc.

(At least that's the way I've understood it...someone correct me if I'm wrong)

Just keeps getting better and better.

Ruste is getting more and more odd in his ramblings. I find myself getting lost and having to rewind a couple of times. Funny thing it's so well done it doesn't frustrate me. Usually if I have to do that it pisses me off.

The settings and the on-site shooting is phenomenal. Fits the plot and characters perfectly.

This show is becoming one of those that I have to instantly watch when I see recording. the dynamic between MM and WH is great and the development of the secondary characters is really strong which makes for a great show.

MM making those men by cutting up the beer can was a little disturbing to me, especially with the accompaning monologe.

Also I understand it is superbowl week and not much else gets watched at that time but I would think that anyone with HBO also has a DVR and can go and watch it after the game.

Ok....thinking about last nights episode and something just popped into my head. Any chance that the new murder that the 2005 detectives are investigating, is that of a woman we've already "met" in the show? I'm thinking slim chance but just throwing it out there. And WH 's character going crazy last night almost makes me think it would be him before it would be MM at this point....(although I don't think either of them did it). Dude definitely has a screw loose.

I thought the same thing.

That awkward pause of his right after the sex scene flashback......I thought "did he just go over the details of that personal conversation and subsequent sex with this wife? That would be weird."

I'm glad they had Hart meltdown last night. It's kind of like Cohle's been saying, at least he realizes he's a bad person. He's self aware. Unlike Hart who's been in denial. Once Hart finally showed some signs of humanity and remorse last night I finally started to sympathize with him a bit.

Shea Wigham appearance

First Alexandra Daddario, now naked Michelle Monaghan. This show is amazing.

I wonder if Woody Harrelson got paid cash for his work on this show?

I mean, on top of having sex scenes with those two women.

It would seem like double dipping. No apologies for pun.

very great show and awesome writing. Cohle's thoughts on religion and Christianity were awesome. I don't agree with them but the way he wove all of that together I followed his logic. And then when he spoke to the effects of looking at images of dead girls over and over and over, how in their very last moments they seemed free and relieved that it was over. WOW!
Also, I was laughing when he asked the dude if she sucked his D, "a little".
And the tension is building with them too. They seem to be bickering more and getting on each others nerves. But things are about to explode and its going to be the start of the ten year falling out.
Another head nod to the Wire, when Hart asks if that "****bird" is inside. I've never heard anyone else use that phrase except the Wire.

The other thing I really appreciate about the miniseries nature of the show is that it appears all 8 episodes will be directed by the same guy (Cary ***unaga), which keeps the tone and vision of the show consistent. Cary has also been the cinematographer on a number of projects too, which really comes through. He has an amazing eye for color and detail. It's easily one of the best photographed TV shows I've ever seen.

Hahaha, I laughed too when he called him ****bird, I've been watching the wire a lot lately, and I always thought that was an awesome phrase. I kind of wasn't sure if it was somehow a racial slur since I'm pretty sure it was almost exclusively white cops calling black guys ****bird, so I was extra excited to hear harrelson use it last night. I'm gonna start calling everyone that now!!!

Waiting next week is going to kill me, I need my fix on a weekly basis.

Also, I think Shea (aka Eli from Boardwalk) is going to be implicated in this somehow. I'd be amazed if he was just in one episode with how big he's been in stuff lately.

Man this show has some great lines by both chars. The "you've got some poosay on you" and "he got a deuce for **** waggin'" made me lol.

The music has been phenomenal too, really adds to the creepy mood.

I still think the evangelist who is the brother of the Governor is behind these murders some how.
Why show that character in the beginning if not to have some sort of significance.

Hart is the warped one of the 2.

Also, there is the explicit drawing from Hart's child. This is the second strange thing from her - - her male dolls in a circle around a naked naked female doll in a previous episode.

Could be a diversion, but doubt it.

Agreed. I like him as an actor but sometimes having these big names gives away the important pieces to the mystery. That's one thing I respect about GOT. Recognizable actors will get killed off out of nowhere! Hopefully Shae's role has some unexpected twists.

I think the daughter is just another example of how he doesn't have control over things at home. We're finding out more and more how much more unstable Hart is than Cohle.

And I don't think unexpected twists are what the show is about. It draws off the sequence of events and the collection of their evidence rather than just out-of-the-blue unexpected twists. We'll see where LeDoux takes them but I think the preacher and the church are no longer involved.

***half-assed spoiler for the film Prisoners below***

Yeah, I was able to figure out the twist in Prisoners because of this very reason.

***End Spoiler***

As far as the "Hart is actually the messed up one" notion. I speculated after the second episode, that he could actually be the killer...

He made a comment about separating things from home and work/life, and said something along the lines of "Man needs a release". This was obviously meant to be in reference to his affair with Tits McGee... but it made me think he could be harboring a deeper "release" that he had to make sure and separate from his home life.

However, I do not think they will go that route, as it would be kind of cliched in my opinion.

Turning into a pretty great show. I think they initially think that LeDoux is the killer. They bust him and gather enough evidence to arrest him for the murder. Before they actually arrest him but after they have told their captain about their evidence, something new comes to light. They want to go with the new lead but the governor or captain steps in and assigns the case to the task force. **** starts blowing up between MM and WH as well as between them and the governer/captain. LeDoux is killed or prosecuted for the murder while MM and WH are blackballed for knowing the truth but unable to do anything about it but wait for the killer to kill again.

I dunno, last night's episode added another layer to the Tuttle ministries and brought that above the surface a bit more. The fact that the preacher and Rheanne (new murder victim originally thought to have drowned) are both connected to Tuttle is too circumstantial...

Like the poster above mentions, I could see MM & WH nabbing Ledoux only to uncover a larger, more powerful force at work (Tuttle?), but given the pressure from their supervisor along with the urgency from the Gov. to resolve the case in the public eye they close it out after getting Ledoux, leaving the root cause unresolved; Ledoux seems to be a small piece of a larger operation. I could definitely see this outcome "ending" MM & WH's relationship, potentially ending their careers. That could explain MM's current state as he could completely lose all motivation and drive given the one thing left to live for was taken away from him.

Just my thoughts...we still have 5 episodes left so A LOT is bound to happen.

Remember they also mentioned Ledoux did time with the girl's husband, Charlie Lange. So Lange could be part of a higher food chain.

So at this point I've gathered that:

1. They convicted the wrong person.
2. They convicted the right person but there was more than one person involved with the murders.
3. There is a copy cat.

If there is a copy cat they are going to assume that it is someone who had extensive knowledge of the case details.

Also, what is going on with the daughter? Between the doll crime scene and her drawings, she was either exposed to something she shouldn't have seen, she has been snooping around in her Dad's case files or something happened to her.

^ Three episodes in, as of now, I'm going with a version of #2. beagle2009 gives a pretty convincing argument.

What's awesome is that the case is actually further along than I expected it to be at this point. My bet is that LeDoux is killed in episode four - right at the halfway point - and then the remaining four episodes take place prominently in 2012. Hopefully with Cohle, Hart and the two black detectives all having to team up to uncover what's really happening.

Good catch - I didn't even notice that. Speaking of that scene...it really felt like there was more to that guy than just mowing the lawn there for a few months. Ironically, WH interrupts MM's interview with the Mower after getting the dispatch info returned on Ledoux.

Another observation that might support my current theory of a potential cover-up (maybe a stretch): MM's rant at the end of episode to the two detectives could elude to his knowledge of additional killers/accomplices at work than just one man (Ledoux). He references the compound in the woods/bayou, and says talking about "what happened back then won't do you any good now". He then points to the picture of the new (2012) victim and says "This is what I'm talking about - time, death & futility. There are broader ideas at work..." etc.
